Adaptive multiresolution schemes with local time stepping for two-dimensional degenerate reaction-diffusion systems
We present a fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for spatially
two-dimensional, possibly degenerate reaction-diffusion systems, focusing on
combustion models and models of pattern formation and chemotaxis in
mathematical biology. Solutions of these equations in these applications
exhibit steep gradients, and in the degenerate case, sharp fronts and
discontinuities. The multiresolution scheme is based on finite volume
discretizations with explicit time stepping. The multiresolution representation
of the solution is stored in a graded tree. By a thresholding procedure, namely
the elimination of leaves that are smaller than a threshold value, substantial
data compression and CPU time reduction is attained. The threshold value is
chosen optimally, in the sense that the total error of the adaptive scheme is
of the same slope as that of the reference finite volume scheme. Since chemical
reactions involve a large range of temporal scales, but are spatially well
localized (especially in the combustion model), a locally varying adaptive time
stepping strategy is applied. It turns out that local time stepping accelerates
the adaptive multiresolution method by a factor of two, while the error remains
controlled.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figure
Adaptive Multiresolution Methods for the Simulation ofWaves in Excitable Media
We present fully adaptive multiresolution methods for a class of spatially two-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems which describe excitable media and often give rise to the formation of spiral waves. A novel model ingredient is a strongly degenerate diffusion term that controls the degree of spatial coherence and serves as a mechanism for obtaining sharper wave fronts. The multiresolution method is formulated on the basis of two alternative reference schemes, namely a classical finite volume method, and Barkley's approach (Barkley in Phys. D 49:61-70, 1991), which consists in separating the computation of the nonlinear reaction terms from that of the piecewise linear diffusion. The proposed methods are enhanced with local time stepping to attain local adaptivity both in space and time. The computational efficiency and the numerical precision of our methods are assessed. Results illustrate that the fully adaptive methods provide stable approximations and substantial savings in memory storage and CPU time while preserving the accuracy of the discretizations on the corresponding finest uniform gri
Vortices within vortices: hierarchical nature of vortex tubes in turbulence
The JHU turbulence database [1] can be used with a state of the art
visualisation tool [2] to generate high quality fluid dynamics videos. In this
work we investigate the classical idea that smaller structures in turbulent
flows, while engaged in their own internal dynamics, are advected by the larger
structures. They are not advected undistorted, however. We see instead that the
small scale structures are sheared and twisted by the larger scales. This
illuminates the basic mechanisms of the turbulent cascade.Comment: 2 pages, 1 low quality video, 1 high quality vide
A Computational Tool for Pre-operative Breast Augmentation Planning in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
AbstractâBreast augmentation was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure in 2011 in the United States. Although aesthetically pleasing surgical results can only be achieved if the correct breast implant is selected from a large variety of different prosthesis sizes and shapes available on the market, surgeons still rely on visual assessment and other subjective approaches for operative planning because of lacking objective evaluation tools. In this paper we present the development of a software prototype for augmentation mammaplasty simulation solely based on 3D surface scans, from which patient-specific finite element models are generated in a semi-automatic process. The finite element model is used to pre-operatively simulate the expected breast shapes using physical soft tissue mechanics. Our approach uses a novel mechanism based on so-called displacement templates, which, for a specific implant shape and position, describe the respective internal body forces. Due to a highly efficient numerical solver we can provide immediate visual feedback of the simulation results, and thus the software prototype can be integrated smoothly into the medical workflow. The clinical value of the developed 3D computational tool for aesthetic breast augmentation surgery planning is demonstrated in patientspecific use cases
Fully adaptive multiresolution schemes for strongly degenerate parabolic equations with discontinuous flux
A fully adaptive finite volume multiresolution scheme for one-dimensional
strongly degenerate parabolic equations with discontinuous flux is presented.
The numerical scheme is based on a finite volume discretization using the
Engquist--Osher approximation for the flux and explicit time--stepping. An
adaptivemultiresolution scheme with cell averages is then used to speed up CPU
time and meet memory requirements. A particular feature of our scheme is the
storage of the multiresolution representation of the solution in a dynamic
graded tree, for the sake of data compression and to facilitate navigation.

The e-Bike Motor Assembly: Towards Advanced Robotic Manipulation for Flexible Manufacturing
Robotic manipulation is currently undergoing a profound paradigm shift due to
the increasing needs for flexible manufacturing systems, and at the same time,
because of the advances in enabling technologies such as sensing, learning,
optimization, and hardware. This demands for robots that can observe and reason
about their workspace, and that are skillfull enough to complete various
assembly processes in weakly-structured settings. Moreover, it remains a great
challenge to enable operators for teaching robots on-site, while managing the
inherent complexity of perception, control, motion planning and reaction to
unexpected situations. Motivated by real-world industrial applications, this
paper demonstrates the potential of such a paradigm shift in robotics on the
industrial case of an e-Bike motor assembly. The paper presents a concept for
teaching and programming adaptive robots on-site and demonstrates their
potential for the named applications. The framework includes: (i) a method to
teach perception systems onsite in a self-supervised manner, (ii) a general
representation of object-centric motion skills and force-sensitive assembly
skills, both learned from demonstration, (iii) a sequencing approach that
exploits a human-designed plan to perform complex tasks, and (iv) a system
solution for adapting and optimizing skills online. The aforementioned
components are interfaced through a four-layer software architecture that makes
our framework a tangible industrial technology. To demonstrate the generality
of the proposed framework, we provide, in addition to the motivating e-Bike
motor assembly, a further case study on dense box packing for logistics

PAX2 Regulates ADAM10 Expression and Mediates Anchorage-Independent Cell Growth of Melanoma Cells
PAX transcription factors play an important role during development and carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated PAX2 protein levels in melanocytes and melanoma cells by Western Blot and immunofluorescence analysis and characterized the role of PAX2 in the pathogenesis of melanoma. In vitro we found weak PAX2 protein expression in keratinocytes and melanocytes. Compared to melanocytes increased PAX2 protein levels were detectable in melanoma cell lines. Interestingly, in tissue sections of melanoma patients nuclear PAX2 expression strongly correlated with nuclear atypia and the degree of prominent nucleoli, indicating an association of PAX2 with a more atypical cellular phenotype. In addition, with chromatin immunoprecipitation assay, PAX2 overexpression and PAX2 siRNA we present compelling evidence that PAX2 can regulate ADAM10 expression, a metalloproteinase known to play important roles in melanoma metastasis. In human tissue samples we found co-expression of PAX2 and ADAM10 in melanocytes of benign nevi and in melanoma cells of patients with malignant melanoma. Importantly, the downregulation of PAX2 by specific siRNA inhibited the anchorage independent cell growth and decreased the migratory and invasive capacity of melanoma cells. Furthermore, the downregulation of PAX2 abrogated the chemoresistance of melanoma cells against cisplatin, indicating that PAX2 expression mediates cell survival and plays important roles during melanoma progression
Mate choice for genetic quality when environments vary: suggestions for empirical progress
Mate choice for good-genes remains one of the most controversial evolutionary processes ever proposed. This is partly because strong directional choice should theoretically deplete the genetic variation that explains the evolution of this type of female mating preferences (the so-called lek paradox). Moreover, good-genes benefits are generally assumed to be too small to outweigh opposing direct selection on females. Here, we review recent progress in the study of mate choice for genetic quality, focussing particularly on the potential for genotype by environment interactions (GEIs) to rescue additive genetic variation for quality, and thereby resolve the lek paradox. We raise five questions that we think will stimulate empirical progress in this field, and suggest directions for research in each area: 1) How is condition-dependence affected by environmental variation? 2) How important are GEIs for maintaining additive genetic variance in condition? 3) How much do GEIs reduce the signalling value of male condition? 4) How does GEI affect the multivariate version of the lek paradox? 5) Have mating biases for high-condition males evolved because of indirect benefits
