Bu nadir görülen vakayı sunarak oftalmologların subkonjonktival kitlelerin tanısında schwannomayı da düşünmelerini istedik.Here, in this study a case of a 33-year-old man presented with a 5-year history of subconjunctival mass is reported. During the immunohistochemical analysis, the tumor cells were strongly positive for S-100 protein. Herein, presenting this rare case of ours, we imply that ophthalmologists should consider schwannoma in the differential diagnosis of subconjuntival masses

    A Unique Case of Intranasal Metastasis from Occult Poorly Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma

    Background: Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTCs) lie, both morphologically and behaviorally, between well-differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas. Metastasis of poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma to the intranasal cavity has not been reported previously in the literature. Case Report: A 48-year-old male patient presented with massive epistaxis and nasal obstruction. On nasal examination, a bleeding, vascular mass was seen filling the left nasal cavity. The histopathological report of the nasal mass was well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma metastasis. Whole body scintigraphy, ultrasonography and positron emission tomography were done to rule out other possible metastases in the body and determine the origin of the tumor, which was identified as the left lobe of the thyroid gland, and there were multiple metastases involving the lung, sacroiliac area, and left humerus. Histopathological examination of a thyroidectomy specimen revealed PDTC consisting of insular, follicular, and papillary components. Postoperatively, the patient received radioactive iodine ablation therapy (iodine-131) and a course of external beam radiation therapy to the sacroiliac area and other metastatic regions. No recurrences were observed in a follow-up period of 5 years after surgery. Conclusion: The metastasis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma as a component of PDTC to the intranasal cavity has not been reported before. It is interesting that the well-differentiated component of the tumor was metastasized in our patient. Due to the aggressiveness of PDTC and the poor survival rates in patients who undergo surgery alone, a multidisciplinary treatment approach is required

    Scintigraphic, histopathologic, and biochemical evaluation of lycopene effects on renal ischemia reperfusion injury in rats

    Introduction/Objective Medical protection of kidneys against ischemia reperfusion injury is very important. Many agents have been used for the protection of ischemia reperfusion renal tissue injury. We aimed to evaluate the radioprotective effect of lycopene on kidneys in ischemia reperfusion injury with histopathological, biochemical, and scintigraphic parameters. Methods Twenty-one Wistar male albino rats were divided into the following three groups: lycopene, control, and sham group. In the lycopene group, lycopene was started three days before right renal ischemia reperfusion injury and continued for 15 days. In the control group, right renal ischemia reperfusion injury was applied with no medication. In the sham group, neither right renal ischemia reperfusion injury nor medication were applied. On the 15th day, all rats were sacrificed after Tc-99m-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphies were taken. Histopathological, biochemical, and scintigraphic evaluations were made. Results The histopathological score was lower in the lycopene group. In biochemical analysis, myeloper-oxidase levels were lower in the lycopene group than in the control group, but not statistically significant. Malondialdehyde and nitrite levels were lower in the lycopene group than in the control group. The postoperative mean Tc-99m-DMSA uptake values were 44.82 +/- 1.84 in the lycopene group, 38.92 +/- 1.17 in the control group, and 50.21 +/- 1.35 in the sham group. DMSA uptake values were higher in the lycopene group than in the control group. Conclusion Lycopene seems to be an effective agent for protection of kidneys in ischemia reperfusion injury as demonstrated by the histopathological, biochemical, and scintigraphic parameters
