    G313.3+00.3: A New Planetary Nebula discovered by the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Spitzer Space Telescope

    We present a new planetary nebula, first identified in images from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, although not recognized at that time. Recent observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope during the GLIMPSE Legacy program have rediscovered the object. The high-resolution radio and infrared images enable the identification of the central star or its wind, the recognition of the radio emission as thermal, and the probable presence of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons in and around the source. These lead to the conclusion that G313.3+00.3 is a planetary nebula. This object is of particular interest because it was discovered solely through radio and mid-infrared imaging, without any optical (or near-infrared) confirmation, and acts as a proof of concept for the discovery of many more highly extinguished planetary nebulae. G313.3+00.3 is well-resolved by both the instruments with which it was identified, and suffers extreme reddening due to its location in the Scutum-Crux spiral arm.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX (aastex), incl. 8 PostScript (eps) figures and 1 table.     Analysis of the Transport Process Providing Spin Injection through an Fe/AlGaAs Schottky Barrier

    Electron spin polarizations of 32% are obtained in a GaAs quantum well via electrical injection through a reverse-biased Fe/AlGaAs Schottky contact. An analysis of the transport data using the Rowell criteria demonstrates that single step tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism. The current-voltage data show a clear zero-bias anomaly and phonon signatures corresponding to the GaAs-like and AlAs-like longitudinal-optical phonon modes of the AlGaAs barrier, providing further evidence for tunneling. These results provide experimental confirmation of several theoretical analyses indicating that tunneling enables significant spin injection from a metal into a semiconductor.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to AP

    Monitoring a simple hydrolysis process in an organic solid by observing methyl group rotation

    We report a variety of experiments and calculations and their interpretations regarding methyl group (CH3) rotation in samples of pure 3-methylglutaric anhydride (1), pure 3-methylglutaric acid (2), and samples where the anhydride is slowly absorbing water from the air and converting to the acid [C6H8O3(1) + H2O → C6H10O4(2)]. The techniques are solid state 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electronic structure calculations in both isolated molecules and in clusters of molecules that mimic the crystal structure, field emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and high resolution 1H NMR spectroscopy. The solid state 1H spin-lattice relaxation experiments allow us to observe the temperature dependence of the parameters that characterize methyl group rotation in both compounds and in mixtures of the two compounds. In the mixtures, both types of methyl groups (that is, molecules of 1 and 2) can be observed independently and simultaneously at low temperatures because the solid state 1H spin-lattice relaxation is appropriately described by a double exponential. We have followed the conversion 1 → 2 over periods of two years. The solid state 1H spin-lattice relaxation experiments in pure samples of 1 and 2 indicate that there is a distribution of NMR activation energies for methyl group rotation in 1 but not in 2 and we are able to explain this in terms of the particle sizes seen in the field emission scanning electron microscopy images

    Fat distribution and longitudinal anthropometric changes in HIV-infected men with and without clinical evidence of lipodystrophy and HIV-uninfected controls: A substudy of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Fat abnormalities are common among HIV-infected persons, but few studies have compared regional body fat distribution, including visceral fat, in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected persons and their subsequent trajectories in body composition over time.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Between 1999 and 2002, 33 men with clinical evidence of lipodystrophy (LIPO+), 23 HIV-infected men without clinical evidence of lipodytrophy (LIPO-), and 33 HIV-uninfected men were recruited from the four sites of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). Participants underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, quantitative computerized tomography of the abdomen and thigh, and circumference measurements of the waist, hip and thigh. Circumference measurements at each semi-annual MACS visit between recruitment and 2008 were used to compare average annual anthropometric changes in the 3 groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Body mass index (BMI) was lower in LIPO+ men than in the LIPO- men and the HIV- uninfected controls (BMI: 23.6 ± 0.4 vs 26.8 ± 1.5 vs 28.7 ± 0.9 kg/m<sup>2</sup>, respectively, p < 0.001). The average amount of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was similar in all three groups (p = 0.26), but after adjustment for BMI, VAT was higher in the LIPO+ group (169 ± 10 cm<sup>2</sup>) compared to the LIPO- men (129 ± 12 cm<sup>2</sup>, p = 0.03) and the HIV-uninfected group (133 ± 11 cm<sup>2</sup>, p = 0.07). Subcutaneous adipose tissue (thigh, abdomen) and total extremity fat were less in the HIV-infected men (LIPO+ and LIPO-) than in the HIV-uninfected men. Over an average of 6 years of follow-up, waist circumference increased at a faster rate in LIPO+ group, compared to the LIPO- men (0.51 cm/year vs 0.08 cm/year, p = 0.02) and HIV-uninfected control men (0.21 cm/year, p = 0.06). The annual changes in hip and thigh circumferences were similar in all three groups</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Subcutaneous lipoatrophy was observed in HIV-infected patients, even those without clinical evidence of lipodystrophy, compared to age-matched HIV-uninfected men. Despite markedly lower BMI, HIV-infected men with lipodystrophy had a similar amount of VAT as HIV-uninfected men and tended to have more rapid increases in waist circumference over 6 years of follow-up. These longitudinal increases in waist circumference may contribute to the development of cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy.</p

    Electrical Spin Pumping of Quantum Dots at Room Temperature

    We report electrical control of the spin polarization of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at room temperature. This is achieved by electrical injection of spin-polarized electrons from an Fe Schottky contact. The circular polarization of the QD electroluminescence shows that a 5% electron spin polarization is obtained in the InAs QDs at 300 K, which is remarkably insensitive to temperature. This is attributed to suppression of the spin relaxation mechanisms in the QDs due to reduced dimensionality. These results demonstrate that practical regimes of spin-based operation are clearly attainable in solid state semiconductor devices.Comment: 4 figures, accepted by Appl. Phys. Let

    The stress response gene DDR48 has been characterized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans to be involved in combating various cellular stressors, from oxidative agents to antifungal compounds. Surprisingly, the biological function of DDR48 has yet to be identified, though it is likely an important part of the stress response. To gain insight into its function, we characterized DDR48 in the dimorphic fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum. Transcriptional analyses showed preferential expression of DDR48 in the mycelial phase. Induction of DDR48 in Histoplasma yeasts developed after treatment with various cellular stress compounds. We generated a ddr48∆ deletion mutant to further characterize DDR48 function. Loss of DDR48 alters the transcriptional profile of the oxidative stress response and membrane synthesis pathways. Treatment with ROS or antifungal compounds reduced survival of ddr48∆ yeasts compared to controls, consistent with an aberrant cellular stress response. In addition, we infected RAW 264.7 macrophages with DDR48-expressing and ddr48∆ yeasts and observed a 50% decrease in recovery of ddr48∆ yeasts compared to wild-type yeasts. Loss of DDR48 function results in numerous negative effects in Histoplasma yeasts, highlighting its role as a key player in the global sensing and response to cellular stress by fungi

    Small RNA Profile in Moso Bamboo Root and Leaf Obtained by High Definition Adapters

    Moso bamboo (Phyllostachy heterocycla cv. pubescens L.) is an economically important fast-growing tree. In order to gain better understanding of gene expression regulation in this important species we used next generation sequencing to profile small RNAs in leaf and roots of young seedlings. Since standard kits to produce cDNA of small RNAs are biased for certain small RNAs, we used High Definition adapters that reduce ligation bias. We identified and experimentally validated five new microRNAs and a few other small non-coding RNAs that were not microRNAs. The biological implication of microRNA expression levels and targets of microRNAs are discussed
