Life satisfaction is a way a person evaluates his or her life and how he or she feels about where it is going in the future. This study was conducted to investigate the level of high achievers’ life satisfaction, the domains of their life satisfaction and its relationship to their academic achievement. Based on the literature review, academic achievement is predicted to contribute significantly to high level of life satisfaction compared to other domains in life. Forty-five (45) high-achieving (those who obtained a CGPA of 3.50 to 3.99) students have participated in this study. This study is adapted from a research of Diener et al. (1985) on Extended Satisfaction with Life Scale (ESWLS). Four domain factors, namely social, self, physical and family were studied. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in this study. The results showed that the high-achieving students showed a high level of life satisfaction in terms of family supports domains but moderate level of satisfaction on their appearance. Nevertheless, for various reasons, academic satisfaction is not a strong determinant of their life satisfaction

The number of students who wishes to change their major is increasing everyday. There are quite a number of students who are still unsure about their future plans even though they have enrolled in a university program. A reason may be that the students are still in conflict about their own identity. Students who are doing their preparatory program should already develop their own identity, which is identity achievement. A survey aimed to study gender differences on the identity status among the preparatory students was conducted. A questionnaire regarding the students’ identity status was used to collect the data. A Likert scale with a four point system was used to measure responses on the questionnaire which consisted of the students’ view of their own choice of major, friendship, recreational activities, dating style and political believes. The findings of this study are important to the lecturers teaching the preparatory programs so that they are aware of their students’ sense of identity as well as help them reach identity achievement

AbstractUniversities around the globe in this 21st century are facing challenges of globalization, competition and information and communication developments. They are required to prepare their students with knowledge and necessary skills so as to face challenges in the real world scenario such as global economy and global society since qualities are highly valued in an increasing globalized world. These universities students need to cope with complex new roles and the urge to succeed in both academic and soft skills. However, on the other hand, to what extent, these students are happy and satisfied with their life, particularly in handling with new challenges and demands from the university and society. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the relationship between academic achievement and life satisfaction among the undergraduate students of UiTM, Shah Alam. A total of 137 undergraduate students participated in this study. Pearson‟s Product –Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to measure the strength and direction of the relationship between variables. The finding showed that there is no relationship between life satisfaction and academic performance among the undergraduates‟ students. Implications and recommendation were discussed in this paper

Anti-inflammatory effect of Mitragyna speciosa crude methanol extract on the guinea pig ileum.

In a recent study, we have shown that the crude methanol extract of Mitragyna speciosa (of the family Rubiaceae) exerted significant in vivo anti-inflammatory activities in rodents as evident in the carageenan-induced paw edema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma tests [1], but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Our present study aims to explore the anti-inflammatory activities of this plant in vitro in order to rationalize the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of some stomach ailments [2]. The pharmacologic actions of M. speciosa were assessed by measuring the mechanical activity of isolated guinea pig ileum strips in an organ bath. The resultant methanol extract (0.01–0.05mg/ml) caused a stimulatory effect followed by a relaxation of ileal activities at a higher dose (0.3–5mg/ml) (p<0.05). These results indicate that M. speciosa exert spasmogenic effects at a lower dose and a spasmolytic effect at a higher dose thus corroborating the use of plant in the treatment of diarrhoea and constipation. Moreover, results indicated that pretreatment with M. speciosa (0.3–5mg/ml) which were tested positive for flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, sterols and tannins produced significant concentration-dependant inhibition of spasmogenic activities when exposed to single submaximal contraction induced by histamine (H) and bradykinin (B). These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory activity of M. speciosa is mediated possibly through the H and B receptor antagonism, thus providing a scientific basis for the folkloric use of this plant in stomach disorders
