    Gender Issues in Children’s Literature: An Analysis of Fairytales

    This paper intends to explore the reasons of gender discrimination indifferent segments of Pakistani society at grass root level. This study isbased on qualitative content analysis of children’s literature from whichthe most popular corpse of ten English fairytales purposively. Activitiesof different characters along with their social were selected andeconomic status, behavioral traits, gendered messages and thematic roleswere analyzed by using coding frame for manifest and stimulus clues forlatent information. This content analysis research indicates that genderdifference is an integral part of the fairy tales which shows female genderinferior to male. A detailed qualitative analysis of these selectedfairytales cited that gender issues start from titles and prevail throughoutthe fairytales. Males had proper names but girls were known with theirattributive names in the titles. The study suggests a need for drasticchange behaviorally, psychologically and materially (in our children’sliterature and particularly in fairytales) to keep pace with the 21st century,which demands us to be more creative, active and innovative withscientific approach instead of becoming an escapist

    Major Role of Microbes in Carbon Fluxes during Austral Winter in the Southern Drake Passage

    Carbon cycling in Southern Ocean is a major issue in climate change, hence the need to understand the role of biota in the regulation of carbon fixation and cycling. Southern Ocean is a heterogeneous system, characterized by a strong seasonality, due to long dark winter. Yet, currently little is known about biogeochemical dynamics during this season, particularly in the deeper part of the ocean. We studied bacterial communities and processes in summer and winter cruises in the southern Drake Passage. Here we show that in winter, when the primary production is greatly reduced, Bacteria and Archaea become the major producers of biogenic particles, at the expense of dissolved organic carbon drawdown. Heterotrophic production and chemoautotrophic CO2 fixation rates were substantial, also in deep water, and bacterial populations were controlled by protists and viruses. A dynamic food web is also consistent with the observed temporal and spatial variations in archaeal and bacterial communities that might exploit various niches. Thus, Southern Ocean microbial loop may substantially maintain a wintertime food web and system respiration at the expense of summer produced DOC as well as regenerate nutrients and iron. Our findings have important implications for Southern Ocean ecosystem functioning and carbon cycle and its manipulation by iron enrichment to achieve net sequestration of atmospheric CO2

    Bacterioplankton drawdown of coral mass-spawned organic matter

    Coral reef ecosystems are highly sensitive to microbial activities that result from dissolved organic matter (DOM) enrichment of their surrounding seawater. However, the response to particulate organic matter (POM) enrichment is less studied. In a microcosm experiment, we tested the response of bacterioplankton to a pulse of POM from the mass-spawning of Orbicella franksi coral off the Caribbean coast of Panama. Particulate organic carbon (POC), a proxy measurement for POM, increased by 40-fold in seawater samples collected during spawning; 68% degraded within 66 h. The elevation of multiple hydrolases presumably solubilized the spawn-derived POM into DOM. A carbon budget constructed for the 275 µM of degraded POC showed negligible change to the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), indicating that the DOM was readily utilized. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry shows that the DOM pool became enriched with heteroatom-containing molecules, a trend that suggests microbial alteration of organic matter. Our sensitivity analysis demonstrates that bacterial carbon demand could have accounted for a large proportion of the POC degradation. Further, using bromodeoxyuridine immunocapture in combination with 454 pyrosequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene, we surmise that actively growing bacterial groups were the primary degraders. We conclude that coral gametes are highly labile to bacteria and that such large capacity for bacterial degradation and alteration of organic matter has implications for coral reef health and coastal marine biogeochemistry

    Prognostic model to predict postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery based on a national prospective observational cohort study.

    Background: Acute illness, existing co-morbidities and surgical stress response can all contribute to postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. The aim of this study was prospectively to develop a pragmatic prognostic model to stratify patients according to risk of developing AKI after major gastrointestinal surgery. Methods: This prospective multicentre cohort study included consecutive adults undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection, liver resection or stoma reversal in 2-week blocks over a continuous 3-month period. The primary outcome was the rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery. Bootstrap stability was used to select clinically plausible risk factors into the model. Internal model validation was carried out by bootstrap validation. Results: A total of 4544 patients were included across 173 centres in the UK and Ireland. The overall rate of AKI was 14·2 per cent (646 of 4544) and the 30-day mortality rate was 1·8 per cent (84 of 4544). Stage 1 AKI was significantly associated with 30-day mortality (unadjusted odds ratio 7·61, 95 per cent c.i. 4·49 to 12·90; P < 0·001), with increasing odds of death with each AKI stage. Six variables were selected for inclusion in the prognostic model: age, sex, ASA grade, preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate, planned open surgery and preoperative use of either an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker. Internal validation demonstrated good model discrimination (c-statistic 0·65). Discussion: Following major gastrointestinal surgery, AKI occurred in one in seven patients. This preoperative prognostic model identified patients at high risk of postoperative AKI. Validation in an independent data set is required to ensure generalizability

    CAREER MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT FOR LEADERSHIP IN LOCAL BANKS

    Local organizations in Pakistan are generally seen giving adequate consideration to human resource related activities such as recruitment and selection, performance evaluation, compensation and rewards administration; however, they do not give ample attention to the otherwise core HR function of career management and development. As a consequence, employees of these organizations generally assume primary responsibility for their career planning and management themselves. These organizations astoundingly overlook this fact that the greatest competitive advantage of an enterprise lies in its ability to have and retain the competent workforce with them- and career management and development has traditionally been an effective tool of employee development and retention. Policy makers of these organizations must understand the need for career management and development of their employees if they want to prepare them for the leadership challenges of the future. This study examined the career building measures of local banks and identified how to ascertain the future talent and steer it to fill the future leadership positions. For this purpose, qualitative research was conducted through in depth interviews and questionnaires along the amiddle hierarchical levels in the local banks. The analysis revealed that very few employees were aware of the career management system of their banks. The most important career development activities of the banks were building team skills, task rotations and individual competency trainings. However, few of the employees were not aware of the term succession planning and were unsure if succession management exists in their banks. Formal assessment is undertaken by most banks to determine the developmental needs of the employees as compared to informal or self assessment. This study will also be useful for these banks to acknowledge the need for career management and development as an effective tool of human resource development for the future.Career Management, Leadership, Career Development, Succession Planning

    Analysis of Proliferation of Broadband Sector In Pakistan

    Abstract � The proliferation of Telecom and broadband industry has proven as one of the fastest industry over the last two decades in Pakistan. The growth in the sector has given birth to massive demand of service provisioning and new entrepreneurs to step forward and invest. The study focuses on today’s telecom sector, its existing businesses by analyzing market behavior and limited analysis of existing market players. The study also focuses on the risk factors and future predictions of broadband sector in urban regions of Pakistan and a review of its regulation body for sector control. The study is focused on extensive content available but the sources of this content are limited. Only Pakistan Telecom Authority and Ministry of Statistical Division of Pakistan have conducted detailed surveys which cover statistical analysis of the entire sector. Analysis should be done on the major market players with defined variables and pre assumed statements to be verified which requires detailed surveys for statistic collection. 1

    Capsomer Dynamics and Stabilization in the T = 12 Marine Bacteriophage SIO-2 and Its Procapsid Studied by CryoEM

    SummaryWe report the subnanometer cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) reconstruction of a marine siphovirus, the Vibrio phage SIO-2. This phage is lytic for related Vibrio species with significant ecological importance, including the broadly antagonistic bacterium Vibrio sp. SWAT3. The three-dimensional structure of the 800 Å SIO-2, icosahedrally averaged head of the tailed particle revealed a T = 12 quasi-symmetry not previously described in a bacteriophage. Two morphologically distinct types of auxiliary proteins were also identified; one species bound to the surface of hexamers, and the other bound to pentamers. The secondary structure, evident in the electron density, shows that the major capsid protein has the HK97-like fold. The three-dimensional structure of the procapsid form, also presented here, has no “decoration” proteins and reveals a capsomer organization due to the constraints of the T = 12 symmetry
