Feminist theorizing in the sociology of sport and physical culture has progressed through ongoing and intense dialogue with an array of critical positions and voices in the social sciences (e.g., Judith Butler, R.W. Connell, Michel Foucault). Yet, somewhat surprisingly, the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu—arguably one of modern sociology’s “most important voices of social critique and theoretical innovation” (Krais, 2006, p. 120)—has gone largely unheard among critical sports scholars interested in gender (notable exceptions include Atencio, Beal & Wilson, 2009; Brown, 2006; Kay & Laberge, 2004; Laberge, 1995). In this paper I introduce recent feminist engagements with Bourdieu’s original work to a critical sports sociology readership via a case study of snowboarding culture and female snowboarders. I begin by briefly examining the efficacy of three of Bourdieu’s key concepts—capital, field and habitus—for explaining gender and embodiment in snowboarding culture. I then consider how the habitus-field complex can illustrate the “synchronous nature of constraint and freedom” (McNay, 2000, p. 61) for women in contemporary physical culture

Embodied boarders: Snowboarding, status and style.

The body is a symbol of status, a system of social markings and a site of distinctions. Drawing on documentary and visual sources, combined with participant observations, this article explores the body as a signifier through an examination of numerous cultural practices used by snowboarders to distinguish themselves from non-snowboarders and each other. In examining embodied snowboarders I firstly analyse their cultural tastes and styles of dress, language and bodily deportment. Secondly, I consider how boarders earn symbolic capital through demonstrations of commitment, physical prowess and risk taking. This analysis implicitly views the body as a social phenomenon, that is, it conceptualises the body as a possessor of power, a form of status, a bearer of symbolic value and a form of physical capital. The body now plays a central role in producing and reproducing social groups and the "embodied boarder" is an important case study for understanding how contemporary youth both construct and make sense of their worlds

Dissecting action sports studies: Past, present, and beyond

The term “action sports” broadly refers to a wide range of mostly individualized activities such as BMX, kite-surfing, skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding that differed – at least in their early phases of development – from traditional rule-bound, competitive, regulated Western “achievement” sport cultures ( Booth and Thorpe, 2007 ; Kusz, 2007a ; Wheaton 2004, 2010 ). Various categorizations have been used to describe these activities, including extreme, lifestyle, and alternative sports. In this chapter, however, the term action sports is used as it is currently the preferred term among committed participants and industry members in North America and Australasia (many of whom reject the overly commercialized “extreme” moniker imposed upon them by transnational media and mainstream sponsors during the mid- and late 1990s). Many action sports gained popularity during the new leisure trends of the 1960s and 1970s and increasingly attracted alternative youth, who appropriated these activities and infused them with a set of hedonistic and carefree philosophies and subcultural styles ( Booth and Thorpe, 2007 ; Thorpe and Wheaton, 2011a ; Wheaton, 2010 )

“Wandering and Wondering”: Theory and Representation in Feminist Physical Cultural Studies

    Get PDF
In this paper we explore the potential of physical cultural studies for collaborative, interdisciplinary, theoretically-informed, reflexive research on the physically active female body. We use the metaphors of "wandering and wondering" to interrogate our experiences of movement within and across physical cultural fields and academic borders. Grounded in an ethnographic narrative approach, we revisit the ways in which different aspects of our identities were highlighted during our waka ama, snowboarding and basketball experiences. Drawing upon feminist readings of Bourdieu’s work, we challenged each other to reflect critically upon previously unquestioned or unexplored aspects of our subjectivities. While the paper focuses on the results of these discussions, we also offer insights into the collaborative process. Ultimately we argue that sharing narratives of our experiences and exploring them further with theory offers a good place to begin new interdisciplinary conversations that may push physical cultural studies research in new directions

Design of Discrete-time Chaos-Based Systems for Hardware Security Applications

Security of systems has become a major concern with the advent of technology. Researchers are proposing new security solutions every day in order to meet the area, power and performance specifications of the systems. The additional circuit required for security purposes can consume significant area and power. This work proposes a solution which utilizes discrete-time chaos-based logic gates to build a system which addresses multiple hardware security issues. The nonlinear dynamics of chaotic maps is leveraged to build a system that mitigates IC counterfeiting, IP piracy, overbuilding, disables hardware Trojan insertion and enables authentication of connecting devices (such as IoT and mobile). Chaos-based systems are also used to generate pseudo-random numbers for cryptographic applications. The chaotic map is the building block for the design of discrete-time chaos-based oscillator. The analog output of the oscillator is converted to digital value using a comparator in order to build logic gates. The logic gate is reconfigurable since different parameters in the circuit topology can be altered to implement multiple Boolean functions using the same system. The tuning parameters are control input, bifurcation parameter, iteration number and threshold voltage of the comparator. The proposed system is a hybrid between standard CMOS logic gates and reconfigurable chaos-based logic gates where original gates are replaced by chaos-based gates. The system works in two modes: logic locking and authentication. In logic locking mode, the goal is to ensure that the system achieves logic obfuscation in order to mitigate IC counterfeiting. The secret key for logic locking is made up of the tuning parameters of the chaotic oscillator. Each gate has 10-bit key which ensures that the key space is large which exponentially increases the computational complexity of any attack. In authentication mode, the aim of the system is to provide authentication of devices so that adversaries cannot connect to devices to learn confidential information. Chaos-based computing system is susceptible to process variation which can be leveraged to build a chaos-based PUF. The proposed system demonstrates near ideal PUF characteristics which means systems with large number of primary outputs can be used for authenticating devices

The Need to Include Animal Protection in Public Health Policies

    Get PDF
Many critical public health issues require non-traditional approaches. Although many novel strategies are used, one approach not widely applied involves improving the treatment of animals. Emerging infectious diseases are pressing public health challenges that could benefit from improving the treatment of animals. Other human health issues, that overlap with animal treatment issues, and that warrant further exploration, are medical research and domestic violence. The diverse nature of these health issues and their connection with animal treatment suggest that there may be other similar intersections. Public health would benefit by including the treatment of animals as a topic of study and policy development

Organizations are there because of their employees and vice versa employees are there because of their organizations. Communication is a basic element which increases harmony among individuals and organizations for achieving goals at the workplace. Communication is a fundamental skill for organizational development, whereby a lack in communication efficiency leads to a dissonance atmosphere. The aim of this study is to explore the issue of organisational communication between heads of departments and academic staff of all four Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN). Study focuses on identifying the relationship of communication flow among academic staff and heads of departments in MTUN vertical top down and horizontal layout. The researcher used a mixed method approach to collect the relevant data for this study questionnaire and interview, questionnaire for quantitative approach and interview for qualitative purpose. Quantitative analysis determines the level of communication satisfaction among heads of departments and academic staff. While, qualitative analysis works on communication satisfaction from the perspective of the heads of departments. The population of this study consisted of two groups, namely, heads of departments (n=113) and academic staff (n=3596) from all four MTUNs. Heads of departments were intentionally selected using purposeful sampling while academic staff were selected randomly. This research contributes to academic organization to quantify the internal organizational communication styles, communication satisfaction patterns and explains how leadership styles influence communication satisfaction. The findings revealed inefficient communication among heads of departments and academic staff due to moderate levels of communication in daily conversation at the workplace. This study insights of communication culture and how to foster an engaged heads of departments and staff with communicational behaviour. The research highlighted the areas of less satisfied communication areas as well as reasons for less satisfaction. Suggestions for improvements of communication skills among heads of iv departments and academic staff are essential and crucial communication skills for leaders must be improved for long term organizational goals

The Flaws and Human Harms of Animal Experimentation

    Get PDF
Nonhuman animal (“animal”) experimentation is typically defended by arguments that it is reliable, that animals provide sufficiently good models of human biology and diseases to yield relevant information, and that, consequently, its use provides major human health benefits. I demonstrate that a growing body of scientific literature critically assessing the validity of animal experimentation generally (and animal modeling specifically) raises important concerns about its reliability and predictive value for human outcomes and for understanding human physiology. The unreliability of animal experimentation across a wide range of areas undermines scientific arguments in favor of the practice. Additionally, I show how animal experimentation often significantly harms humans through misleading safety studies, potential abandonment of effective therapeutics, and direction of resources away from more effective testing methods. The resulting evidence suggests that the collective harms and costs to humans from animal experimentation outweigh potential benefits and that resources would be better invested in developing human-based testing methods

The current study examines the impact of leverage on earning management in manufacturing sector of Pakistan. It selects the list of 159 non financial firms from Pakistan stock exchange for the time period from 2009 to 2015. The study has used Modified Jones Model 1995 as a proxy of earning management. Independent variable includes leverage along with three control variables i.e. growth, firm size and return on assets. The findings reveal that there is significant positive relationship between leverage and earning management activities while other variables of the firm i.e. return on assets and firm size were also found to be significant, whereas no significant relationship was found between growth and earning management activities. This study has also discussed the relationship between earning management and discretionary accruals.  Implications of the study for different stakeholders have also been discussed. Keywords: Earning Management, Discretionary Accruals, Leverage, Non-Discretionary Accruals
