ObjectiveTo evaluate analgesic effects of acupuncture in preterm neonates during minor painful procedures.MethodsTen preterm neonates requiring heel prick for blood gas analysis were enrolled in the study, which had a crossover design. Oxygen saturation, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, and crying duration were recorded before and after heel prick. Babies were given expressed breast milk before each procedure. Patients were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture or not, and the groups were crossed over on the following day, so that patients who had received acupuncture received only breast milk, and the previous breast milk only group received both acupuncture and breast milk. The neonatal infant pain scale (NIPS) was used for pain evaluation.ResultsCrying duration and NIPS pain scores during heel prick were lower in the neonates who had received acupuncture.ConclusionAcupuncture is an effective method for the treatment of pain in neonates

WOS: 000407960800027The present questionnaire study was conducted to establish potato purchasing preferences of 385 consumers selected randomly from Igdir, Turkey. All the items ranging from 1 to 11 on the basis of an ordinal 11 point scale data on fresh potato and its products were collected from the consumers. Robust Unweighted Least Squares (RULS) extraction method was used based on promin rotation method for obtaining better solutions in the ordinal data set. Polychoric correlation matrix was used instead of Pearson correlation matrix in the violation of the basic assumption on normal distribution of the ordinal items due to the fact that it is evidence that null hypothesis of multivariate asymmetric kurtosis was rejected (P= 0.000). Four new factors were extracted from all the items on both fresh potato and its products through 'Factor 'software program, which gives more comprehensive and understandable outputs. The rotated factor loadings for potato products were clustered into four factors: content (Factor 1), value of nutrient and calorie (Factor 2), additives and price (Factor 3) and situation of package and health (Factor 4), respectively. The rotated factor loadings for fresh potato preferences of the consumers were also assigned to four factors: source (Factor 1), price and color (Factor 2), tubers structure (Factor 3) and tubers properties (Factor 4), respectively. The current results revealed that an application of EFA factor analysis on the basis of ULS extraction method, promin rotation method and polychoric correlations as a dispersion matrix was more effective when compared with the traditional EFA applications for the ordinal data. Besides, potato producers, sellers and entrepreneurs who desire to develop new marketing strategies might be recommended to take into account four factors that can affect purchasing preferences of the consumers on fresh potato and its product

###EgeUn###Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common liver malignancy in children. The prognosis changes according to the histologic subtypes of HB. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the expression level of selected microRNAs (miRNAs) in HB as well as in histologic subtypes, and to consider the association with the prognosis. A total of 22 HB tumor samples, subtyped as fetal (n= 16) and embryonal (n= 6), and 10 nontumorous surrounding liver samples were evaluated in this study. Expressions of miR-17, miR-146a, miR-302d, and miR-19b were analyzed in 22 HB tumor samples and 10 nontumorous surrounding liver samples by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Lower miRNA-17 expression levels were obtained in tumor samples in comparison with nontumorous surrounding liver samples (P= 0.028). Lower miRNA-17 expression was significant for predicting prognosis in HB patients (area under receiver-operator characteristic curve= 0.875, P= 0.044). A higher-level of miR-19b was found in embryonal samples (P= 0.008). Overall and event-free survival was not found to correlate with miRNA expression levels (P> 0.05). This research finds miRNA-17 and miRNA-19b expression levels can provide important data on diagnosis and prognosis in HB showing different clinical behaviors

All rights reserved.Lamiaceae is one of the largest families in the plant kingdom, including the genus Stachys and Scutellaria, which are used in many folk medicines throughout the world for the prevention and also the treatment of several disorders. In vitro biological potential of Stachys iberica subsp. stenostachya and Scutellaria orientalis subsp. sosnowskyi were investigated in the current study. The aerial parts of the plants were extracted using different solvents such as n-hexane, chloroform, and methanol. In addition, infusions of each plant were prepared. The antioxidant potential of the samples was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ABTS assays, ferrous ion-chelating, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Anticholinesterase activity of the extracts was also determined. Spectrophotometric analysis was used to assess the total phenolic content of the samples. The antimicrobial activities of samples were determined by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) against seven bacteria and three Candida spp. yeast. According to the findings, the infusion demonstrated significant antioxidant properties, whilst the extracts demonstrated high-to-moderate antioxidant effects. The n-hexane extracts showed higher antifungal activity against C.parapsilosis and C.tropicalis. These outcomes suggest that these two species from Turkey could be employed in the manufacture of phytopharmaceuticals

OBJECTIVE: To identify how acupressure on the acupoint Yintang (EX-HN 3) impacts oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and peripheral perfusion in term-born infants without underlying disease. METHODS: Infants born between weeks 37 and 42 of gestation were included in this study. The polyclinic's neonatology room was noise-controlled and made half-dark to prevent the perfusion index from being confounded. A pulse oximeter was linked to the baby's left lower extremity. Acupressure was applied on Yintang (EX-HN 3) for 30 s clockwise, held for 30 s, and then acupressure was applied for another 30 s counterclockwise. The baby's SaO(2), pulse rate, and perfusion index were recorded for each minute before and after acupressure. RESULTS: When pre- and post-acupressure pulse rate values were compared, a significant decrease in pulse rate values after acupressure application was observed. When pre- and post-acupressure oxygen saturation values were compared, a significant increase in post-acupressure oxygen saturation was observed. In addition, peripheral perfusion increased significantly after acupressure. CONCLUSION: Acupressure application has been used in traditional medicine for many years. However, it is not yet widely used in modern medicine. This study shows the impact of acupressure on neonatal skin perfusion, oxygen saturation, and pulse rate. (C) 2015 JTCM. All rights reserved

Background: Inferior vena cava (IVC) oxygen saturation as an indicator of mixed venous oxygenation may be valuable for understanding postnatal adaptations in newborn infants. It is unknown how this parameter progresses in critically ill premature infants. Aims: To investigate IVC oxygen saturation during the first three days of life in preterm infants with and without patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Study Design: Case-control study. Methods: Twenty-seven preterm infants were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care. Preterm infants with umbilical venous catheterization were included in the study. Six umbilical venous blood gas values were obtained from each infant during the first 72 hours of life. Preterm infants in the study were divided into two groups. Haemodynamically significant PDA was diagnosed by echocardiography in 11 (41%) infants before the 72nd hour of life in the study group and ibuprofen treatment was started, whereas 16 (59%) infants who didn't have haemodynamically significant PDA were included in the control group. Results: In the entire group, the highest value of mean IVC oxygen saturation was 79.9% at the first measurement and the lowest was 64.8% at the 72nd hour. Inferior vena cava oxygen saturations were significantly different between the study and control groups. Posthoc analysis revealed that the first and 36th hour measurements made the difference (p=0.01). Conclusion: Inferior vena cava oxygen saturation was found to be significantly different between preterm infants with and without PDA. Further studies are needed to understand the effect of foetal shunts on venous oxygenation during postnatal adaptation in newborn infants

Neonatal cerebral sinovenous thrombosis: Two cases, two different gene polymorphisms and risk factors

    No full text
Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare disease in the neonatal period and also the greatest risk of neonatal mortality and morbidity. In this report, we presented two cases with CSVT and different risk factors. One of these cases had methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T homozygous polymorphism and the other case had both MTHFR A1298C homozygous polymorphism, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) 4G/5G polymorphism and elevated lipoprotein a. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of therapy of neonatal CSVT may prevent neonatal mortality and poor long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes
