Satellite to satellite tracking error analysis studies and data processing

    Get PDF
An error analysis was conducted to examine the effects of placing the target satellite in an orbit nearly coplanar with the relay satellite and of data span length on the accuracy with which the satellite states can be recovered. An analysis of error models using actual satellite to satellite tracking data spans is included. Results are tabulated

    Volcanological constraints of Archaean tectonics

Volcanological and trace element geochemical data can be integrated to place some constraints upon the size, character and evolutionary history of Archean volcanic plumbing, and hence indirectly, Archean tectonics. The earliest volcanism in any greenhouse belt is almost universally tholeitic basalt. Archean mafic magma chambers were usually the site of low pressure fractionation of olivine, plagioclase and later Cpx + or - an oxide phase during evolution of tholeitic liquids. Several models suggest basalt becoming more contaminated by sial with time. Data in the Uchi Subprovince shows early felsic volcanics to have fractionated REE patterns followed by flat REE pattern rhyolites. This is interpreted as initial felsic liquids produced by melting of a garnetiferous mafic source followed by large scale melting of LIL-rich sial. Rare andesites in the Uchi Subprovince are produced by basalt fractionation, direct mantle melts and mixing of basaltic and tonalitic liquids. Composite dikes in the Abitibi Subprovince have a basaltic edge with a chill margin, a rhyolitic interior with no basalt-rhyolite chill margin and partially melted sialic inclusions. Ignimbrites in the Uchi and Abitibi Subprovinces have mafic pumice toward the top. Integration of these data suggest initial mantle-derived basaltic liquids pond in a sialic crust, fractionate and melt sial. The inirial melts low in heavy REE are melts of mafic material, subsequently melting of adjacent sial produces a chamber with a felsic upper part underlain by mafic magma

Is It Sexual Harassment or Not - The Single Incident Exception

    Get PDF
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits sexual harassment in the workplace. In a 2004 case of first impression, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals looked at an employer\u27s affirmative defense against a hostile work environment claim involving a single incident of sexual harassment committed by a supervisor. The Eighth Circuit modified the test handed down by the Supreme Court in this situation. After outlining the historical background and rationale for imposing liability on employers for the actions of their supervisors, this Note will explore the logic behind the Eighth Circuit\u27s interpretation of the Supreme Court test and analyze the implications of this interpretation on workplaces in the Eighth Circuit

A collaborative integrated stem teaching: Examination of a science and math teacher collaboration on an integrated stem unit

    Get PDF
The integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum in middle school science and math classrooms is a reform effort currently taking place. The teachers are being encouraged to teach integrated content through national and state standards. The teachers have not been trained to do this form of teaching, which has led to feelings of discomfort or incompetence to fulfill those standards. This has led to a need for professional developments to train these teachers. Those developing the professional developments are seeking to identify ways to encourage teachers to continue to implement integrated units. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a collaborative teaching relationship between a math and science teacher following a professional development. The teachers used a common integrated STEM unit to teach math and science standards by using engineering design as the integrator. The teachers provided lesson plans, were video recorded during implementation, interviewed pre and post-implementation, and made daily journal entries. These data were analyzed to document the collaboration and identify impacts of the collaboration

Dehiscence of the Fruit of Papaver orientale L.

    Get PDF
Dehiscence is the processs of opening in anthers. spore cases and dry fruits. The dry fruit described here is capsule. When one speaks of capsule dehiscence, four types are considered: (1) pericidal dehiscence - by pores at the species of carpels; (2) loculicidal dehiscence - lengthwise along the middle of each carpel; (3) septicidal dehiscence - lengthwise along the lines of adjoining carpels; and (4) circcuascissile dehiscence - along a circular line perpendicular to the main axis. It is the first type of dehiscence with which this study is concerned

Deaths certified as asthma and use of medical services: A national case-control study

This is an open access publication. The official published version can be accessed from the link below. Background: Studies have linked asthma death to either increased or decreased use of medical services. Methods: A population based case-control study of asthma deaths in 1994–8 was performed in 22 English, six Scottish, and five Welsh health authorities/boards. All 681 subjects who died were under the age of 65 years with asthma in Part I on the death certificates. After exclusions, 532 hospital controls were matched to 532 cases for age, district, and date of asthma admission/death. Data were extracted blind from primary care records. Results: The median age of the subjects who died was 53 years; 60% of cases and 64% of controls were female. There was little difference in outpatient attendance (55% and 55%), hospital admission for asthma (51% and 54%), and median inpatient days (20 days and 15 days) in the previous 5 years. After mutual adjustment and adjustment for sex, using conditional logistic regression, three variables were independently associated with asthma death: fewer general practice contacts (odds ratio 0.82 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74 to 0.91) per 5 contacts) in the previous year, more home visits (1.14 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.21) per visit) in the previous year, and fewer peak expiratory flow recordings (0.83 (95% CI 0.74 to 0.92) per occasion) in the previous 3 months. These associations were similar after adjustment for markers of severity, psychosocial factors, systemic steroids, short acting bronchodilators and antibiotics, although the association with peak flow was weakened and just lost significance. Conclusion: Asthma death is associated with less use of primary care services. Both practice and patient factors may be involved and a better understanding of these may offer possibilities for reducing asthma death. This study was funded jointly between the National Research and Development Asthma Management Programme (contract number AM1/ 05/002) and the National Asthma Campaign through a grant from Glaxo Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline)

Solar Carbon Monoxide, Thermal Profiling, and the Abundances of C, O, and their Isotopes

A solar photospheric "thermal profiling" analysis is presented, exploiting the infrared rovibrational bands of carbon monoxide (CO) as observed with the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) at Kitt Peak, and from above the Earth's atmosphere by the Shuttle-borne ATMOS experiment. Visible continuum intensities and center-limb behavior constrained the temperature profile of the deep photosphere, while CO center-limb behavior defined the thermal structure at higher altitudes. The oxygen abundance was self consistently determined from weak CO absorptions. Our analysis was meant to complement recent studies based on 3-D convection models which, among other things, have revised the historical solar oxygen (and carbon) abundance downward by a factor of nearly two; although in fact our conclusions do not support such a revision. Based on various considerations, an oxygen abundance of 700+/-100 ppm (parts per million relative to hydrogen) is recommended; the large uncertainty reflects the model sensitivity of CO. New solar isotopic ratios also are reported for 13C, 17O, and 18O.Comment: 90 pages, 19 figures (some with parts "a", "b", etc.); to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement
