The chokeberry plant, which is native to North America and the south of Canada, is a deciduous, shrub-shaped, berry-like plant belonging to the Rosaceae family, which survives for many years. It is seen as a plant that adapts easily to almost every climatic condition and soil and has many beneficial properties for health. Within the scope of this study, methanol, 70% ethanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and water extracts were prepared from the fruits collected from the Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott plant, which is cultivated in the Kırklareli region. The chemical contents of the obtained extracts were clarified by high performance liquid chromatography. It was determined that phenolic compounds such as ferulic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin, quercetin-3- galactoside, p-coumaric acid were found in the extracts, and ethyl acetate extract was found to have the richest phenolic substance profile. Malvin anthocyanin compound was detected only in methanol extract

Histopathological and biochemical findings of congenital copper deficiency: are these similar to those of caprine arthritis-encephalitis?

This study was done after identifying animals with a twisted carpal joint in goat herd. These included a kid goat walking on its articulus carpii and a newborn goat with a stiff leg. Necropsies of the diseased goats revealed swollen carpal joints that were twisted backwards. Arthritis was observed during microscopic examination of the carpal joints. Very low levels of eosinophil, leucocyte, and lymphocyte cell infiltration were found in the central nervous system and meninges. Serum copper levels were significantly decreased in most of the animals. All of these results led us to diagnose the animals with swayback disease

Today, new agents are required to protect from cancer due to the side effects and some deficiencies in the medical drugs used to treat cancer. Because of this reason, active substances used in drugs which is herbal origin of the treatment of tumors as an alternative agent studies continues to increase. It has been determined that some species belonging to the genus Centaurea have cytotoxic effect. Centaurea babylonica plant has not been performed on cytotoxicity before. Plant was collected from Çamlıyayla district of Mersin province. Methanol extract was prepared from the plant and cytotoxicity tests of the extracts were performed. In vitro cytotoxic effects of extraneous material obtained from the supernatant were determined by MTT assay using C6 (Glioma), A549 (human lung adenocarcinoma) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cell lines. Cytotoxic effect was found high in methanol extract. In the DNA synthesis inhibition test of extract, the extract was found to show a high inhibition from the cisplatin used as a control. The 3T3 test, in which the methanol extract showed no toxic effect on healthy fibroblast cells, was supported

Experimental toxoplasmosis was induced in rabbits using different routes. A total of 42 animals were used; 36 of them were in the experimental groups and the other six comprised the control group. In addition, five guinea pigs were used for preparing hyperimmune sera against Toxoplasma gondii. The Ankara strain was inoculated intravenously (group 1, n: 12), intraperitoneally (group 11, n: 12) and intradermally (group III, n: 12) into the rabbits. Group IV animals were kept as controls (n: 6). Clinical and macroscopical findings varied according to the routes of inoculation and organs affected. Microscopically, multifocal necrosis with T. gondii tachyzoites was the main lesion in group I. In group 11, necrotic lesions started at the serosal surfaces of the abdominal organs. In both groups, lesions were distributed in and invaded the deep parts of organs in accordance with post-inoculation days. In group 111, lesions characterized by chronic inflammatory changes and tissue cysts were detected in the brain, liver and spleen in particular. Immurohistochemically, it was observed that positive reactions were not only observed in the tachyzoites and tissue cysts but also detected in antigenic clusters of destroyed organism on the serosal surfaces of the organs in the abdominal cavity

Sevgi, Levent (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: International Symposium on Complex Computing-Networks, Dogus University: Istanbul, Turkey, 13-14, 2005.The numerical modeling and simulation of multimixed path surface wave propagation is discussed. Sea land, sea-land-sea transitions are modeled via fast integral equation solutions and the results are compared against the parabolic equation method

A multicenter survey of childhood asthma in Turkey - II: Utilization of asthma drugs, control levels and their determinants

Many surveys worldwide have consistently demonstrated a low level of asthma control and under-utilization of preventive asthma drugs. However, these studies have been frequently criticized for using population-based samples, which include many patients with no or irregular follow-ups. Our aim, in this study, was to define the extent of asthma drug utilization, control levels, and their determinants among children with asthma attending to pediatric asthma centers in Turkey. Asthmatic children (age range: 6-18 yr) with at least 1-yr follow-up seen at 12 asthma outpatient clinics during a 1-month period with scheduled or unscheduled visits were included and were surveyed with a questionnaire-guided interview. Files from the previous year were evaluated retrospectively to document control levels and their determinants. From 618 children allocated, most were mild asthmatics (85.6%). Almost 30% and 15% of children reported current use of emergency service and hospitalization, respectively; and 51.4% and 53.1% of children with persistent and intermittent disease, respectively, were on daily preventive therapy, including inhaled corticosteroids. Disease severity [odds ratio: 12.6 (95% confidence intervals: 5.3-29.8)], hospitalization within the last year [3.4 (1.4-8.2)], no use of inhaled steroids [2.9 (1.1- 7.3)], and female gender [2.3 (1.1-5.4)] were major predictors of poor asthma control as defined by their physicians. In this national pediatric asthma study, we found a low level of disease control and discrepancies between preventive drug usage and disease severity, which shows that the expectations of guidelines have not been met even in facilitated centers, thus indicating the need to revise the severity-based approach of asthma guidelines. Efforts to implement the control-based approach of new guidelines (Global Initiative for Asthma 2006) would be worthwhile
