A machine learning approach with verification of predictions and assisted supervision for a rule-based network intrusion detection system

    Get PDF
Network security is a branch of network management in which network intrusion detection systems provide attack detection features by monitorization of traffic data. Rule-based misuse detection systems use a set of rules or signatures to detect attacks that exploit a particular vulnerability. These rules have to be handcoded by experts to properly identify vulnerabilities, which results in misuse detection systems having limited extensibility. This paper proposes a machine learning layer on top of a rule-based misuse detection system that provides automatic generation of detection rules, prediction verification and assisted classification of new data. Our system offers an overall good performance, while adding an heuristic and adaptive approach to existing rule-based misuse detection systems

Hardware acceleration for real time processing systems

    Get PDF
This Master Thesis presents different Hardware acceleration algorithms and its benefits compared to the software implementation. The proposed algorithms are implemented on Xilinx ZYNQ-7000 series XC7Z020 SoC using High-Level-Synthesis (HLS) tool. With todays System-on-Chips from Xilinx or Intel, a process can be chosen to be implemented in the Programmable Logic or in the Processing System. In order to have a better acceleration factor, different approximate and accurate adders and multipliers were instantiated in Verilog, synthesized and simulated using Vivado and finally they were compared between each other to see if they really offer benefits or not. In the case of approximated adders, they showed very promising results for the application written in this Thesis. On the other hand, approximated multipliers exhibited worse results than the accurate ones

[EUS] Giza jarduerek eragindako klima-aldaketa dela eta, ozeanoetako tenperatura igo egin da azken mendean, eta ondorioz, aldatu egin da mikroorganismo-populazioen aniztasuna eta banaketa. Esaterako, Vibrio generoko bakterioak ugaritzen ari dira, mundu-mailako bibriosiaren intzidentziaemendioa kausatuz. Bakterio Gram negatibo hauentzat diseinaturiko hazkuntza-medioak ez dira oso eraginkorrak izaten detekzioari dagokionean; horregatik, mikroorganismoen kultiboan oinarritzen ez diren zenbaketa- eta detekzio-teknikak garatu dira, besteak beste, in situ fluoreszentzia hibridazioa (FISH) eta honen hobekuntza den Catalyzed Reporter Deposition (CARD)-FISH. Teknika hauetan, mikroorganismoak fluoreszentziaz markatzen dira, itu-mikroorganismoen 16S rRNA-rekiko osagarria den zunda espezifiko baten bidez. Kasu honetan, GV 841 zunda erabili da, espezifikotasuna eta estaldura beste zunda batzuekin konparatu ostean. Zunda espezifikoa bilatzeaz gain, Pernthaler eta lankideen (2004) CARD-FISH protokoloa egokitu egin da Vibrio spp. detektatzeko; horretarako, lisozimaren kontzentrazioa igo da bakterioen horma iragazkorrago bihurtzeko, eta laginen berehalako mikroskopio-behaketa egin da. Emaitzek adierazi dute CARD-FISH, GV 841 zundarekin konbinatuta, baliozko metodoa dela V. harveyi-en detekziorako. Hala ere, metodoa aplikatu aurretik kontutan hartu behar da, alde batetik, metodoak zenbait muga dituela, eta bestetik, espezie ezberdinekin eta lagin naturalekin esperimentu-kontrolak egin behar direla.[EN] Due to the climate change caused by human activity, ocean temperature has increased during the last century. Thus, the diversity and distribution of the microbe populations have changed. For example, bacteria of genus Vibrio are growing on number, thereby increasing the incidence of vibriosis worldwide. In terms of identification, the culture media designed for these gram-negative bacteria do not result very useful. Because of this, some culture-independent identification and detection techniques have been developed, such as the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Catalyzed Reporter Deposition (CARD)-FISH. In these techniques, microorganisms are fluorescently stained by specific probes, complementary to the 16S rRNA of the target cells. In this case, the GV 841 probe has been used, after comparing its specificity and coverage with other probes. Also, increasing the lysozyme concentration used to enhance the permeability of the bacteria cell wall and carrying out immediate microscopic observation, Pernthaler et al. (2004) CARD-FISH protocol has been adjusted for the detection of Vibrio spp. The results have shown that the combination of the CARD-FISH technique with the GV 841 probe is a valid method for the detection of V. harveyi. This method, however, has some limitations to take into account before applying it and also, it is necessary to make experimental controls using different Vibrio species and environmental samples

The second Copernican revolution in the Anthropocene: an overview

    Get PDF
This article explores three recent courses in the global study of sustainability on the Earth. The first section is an overview of the Global Environment Outlook 4: Environment for Development (GEO-4) report, which summarizes the radical and unsustainable transformations developed in the interaction between the biosphere and the noosphere during the last twenty years. The second section presents the Hilbertian program of the Earth System Science proposed by Paul J. Crutzen and Hans Joachim Schellnhuber. They have explained that, due to the human action, we are living in an emerging geological and historical epoch: the Anthropocene. This presupposes a methodological challenge, called by the authors “the second Copernican revolution”. Finally, the third section links this challenge to environmental ethics through the description of the work of Hans Jonas and Tongjin Yang.Peer Reviewe

This article proposes an agent-oriented methodology called MAS-CommonKADS and develops a case study. This methodology extends the knowledge engineering methodology CommonKADSwith techniquesfrom objectoriented and protocol engineering methodologies. The methodology consists of the development of seven models: Agent Model, that describes the characteristics of each agent; Task Model, that describes the tasks that the agents carry out; Expertise Model, that describes the knowledge needed by the agents to achieve their goals; Organisation Model, that describes the structural relationships between agents (software agents and/or human agents); Coordination Model, that describes the dynamic relationships between software agents; Communication Model, that describes the dynamic relationships between human agents and their respective personal assistant software agents; and Design Model, that refines the previous models and determines the most suitable agent architecture for each agent, and the requirements of the agent network

UER technique: conceptualisation for agent oriented development

    Get PDF
The problem of conceptualisation is the first step towards the identication of the functional requirements of a system. This article proposes two extensions of well-known object oriented techniques: UER (User-Environment-Responsibility) technique and enhanced CRC (Class-ResponsibilityCollaboration) cards. UER technique consists of (a) looking for the users of systems and describing the ways the system is used; (b) looking for the objects of the environment and describing the possible interactions; and (c) looking for the general requirements or goals of the system, the actions that it should carry out without explicit interaction. The enhanced CRC cards together with the internal use cases technique is used for dening collaborations between agents. These techniques can be easily integrated in UML (Unied Modelling Language) [2], dening the new notation symbols as stereotypes

Science, Responsibility and Global Sustainability: Steps toward a New Ethical Paradigm?

1 Introduction: The Catastrophic Convergence and the Tropic of Chaos Global crisis is not a technical problem, nor even an economic problem. It is, fundamentally, a cultural and political problem, where we need new epistemological and ethical tools. Climate change has arrived in a world primed for global crisis. The dislocations of unsustainable change intersect with the already-existing crisis of poverty, resources, and violence. Christian Parenti has called this collision of political, econ..
