Religion and modernity in Spain: religious experience in the novels of Ramón Pérez de Ayala

While Ramón Pérez de Ayala is widely regarded as a leading liberal with strong anti-Catholic and indeed anti-religious views, a close examination of his novels reveals a more ambivalent attitude to religious experience. Indeed, his liberalism could be said to embrace religion in its spiritual, as distinct from its temporal, dimensions. This article examines a number of Pérez de Ayala's major novels and discusses his views on, among other things, his knowledge of biblical criticism, his views on transcendence, pantheism, education, Church and State, scholasticism, neo-Thomist aesthetics, sexuality, women and marriage. Perez de Ayala makes extensive use of the Bible and religious texts in his works and, in his advocacy of a return to the values of early Christianity, could be said to show affinities with religious or theological modernism, which is conventionally held not to have any impact within Spain

Retablo y frontal del convento de San Juan de Quejana en Álava (1396)

El retablo y frontal procedentes del convento de San Juan de Quejana en Álava, hoy conservados en el Art Institute de Chicago, formaron parte de la capilla funeraria del canciller Pedro López de Ayala, ubicada en el citado convento. Desde el punto de vista formal, estas pinturas han sido catalogadas como gótico lineal arcaizante, pero en ellas también se pueden apreciar elementos procedentes de la pintura italianizante e incluso de la pintura del gótico internacional. En el campo iconográfico se estudian los aspectos conflictivos de su temática y desde el punto de vista del patronazgo se investiga sobre el papel supuestamente desempeñado por el canciller Ayala en el encargo de estas pinturas. En este sentido, tanto los aspectos formales de las pinturas como los datos históricos que conocemos sobre la figura de Pedro López de Ayala, aconsejan relacionar su patronazgo con la mujer del canciller Ayala, Leonor de Guzmán. Ello no impide suponer que la función de tales pinturas, igual que los otros elementos de la capilla funeraria para la que se realizaron, fue la de exaltar el linaje de los Ayala e interceder por su descanso eterno.The altarpiece and altar frontal from the Saint-John convent of Quejana in Álava are now in the Art Institute of Chicago, but originally they were in the funerary Chapel that Pedro López de Ayala had in that convent. In a formal level, these paintings have been considered as archaic linear gothic, but we can also see in them features from the Italian and International styles. As refer to the iconographic point of view it has been studied the controversial aspects regarding its thematic and as refer to patronage, research has been done into the role supposedly played by the Ayala Chancellor in the commission of these paintings. In that way, the formal features of these paintings and the historical data that we know about the Chancellor advise us to relate their patronage with the Ayala's wife, Leonor de Guzmán. The previous means no problem to suppose that the role of these paintings was, as it is the case with the other elements in the Ayala funerary chapel, to exalt the Ayala family and to intercede for their eternal rest

The AGL Equation from a Dipole Picture

The AGL equation includes all multiple pomeron exchanges in the double logarithmic approximation (DLA) limit, leading to an unitarized gluon distribution in the small $x$ regime. This equation was originally obtained using the Glauber-Mueller approach. We demonstrate in this contribution that the AGL equation can also be obtained from the dipole picture. Our conclusion is that the AGL equation is a good candidate for an unitarized evolution equation at small $x$ in the DLA limit.Comment: 3 pages. Measuring Social Welfare Gains in Social Assistance Programs: An Application to European Countries

This paper aims to provide a framework for a complete assessment of the overall welfare gains resulting from social assistance programs. We make use of a social welfare function that satisfies several properties that must be considered when measuring the protection provided by these programs. We propose measuring the welfare gains that a society derives from these programs by summing up them in a way that is consistent with the standard value judgements in the income inequality literature. We also propose analytical tools that accumulate the welfare gains that, apart from having the advantage of being easy to interpret, allow the ranking of different scenarios and have an associated dominance criterion.
