    Three–Dimensional Seismic Diffraction Imaging for Detecting Near-Surface Inhomogeneities

    One of the problems encountered in a variety of near-surface investigations is detecting and mapping localized inhomogeneities. Typical examples of such inhomogeneous sources are cavities, caves and tunnels. Different methods for detecting shallow subsurface sources utilizing seismic waves diffracted by these sources were proposed by many researchers in the last three decades. Most of these methods suggest that every subsurface point is a possible location of a point diffractor. Imaging of the diffractors is based on a spatial summation of the diffracted wavefield along diffraction time surfaces (defined by source-receiver geometry) in 2D or 3D space. The summation is performed with a fixed velocity value estimated from velocity analysis of the diffraction data. In this study, we present a path integral summation approach, where for every subsurface point the wavefield is stacked together along all possible diffraction time surfaces having a common apex at a given time. The result of the imaging is a 3D volume in which prominent diffraction anomalies appear at spatial locations close to the imaged sources. This path integral summation approach has been successfully tested on synthetic data and further applied at several sites with known subsurface sources

    Molecular and Cellular Profiling of Scalp Psoriasis Reveals Differences and Similarities Compared to Skin Psoriasis

    Scalp psoriasis shows a variable clinical spectrum and in many cases poses a great therapeutic challenge. However, it remains unknown whether the immune response of scalp psoriasis differs from understood pathomechanisms of psoriasis in other skin areas. We sought to determine the cellular and molecular phenotype of scalp psoriasis by performing a comparative analysis of scalp and skin using lesional and nonlesional samples from 20 Caucasian subjects with untreated moderate to severe psoriasis and significant scalp involvement and 10 control subjects without psoriasis. Our results suggest that even in the scalp, psoriasis is a disease of the inter-follicular skin. The immune mechanisms that mediate scalp psoriasis were found to be similar to those involved in skin psoriasis. However, the magnitude of dysregulation, number of differentially expressed genes, and enrichment of the psoriatic genomic fingerprint were more prominent in skin lesions. Furthermore, the scalp transcriptome showed increased modulation of several gene-sets, particularly those induced by interferon-gamma, compared with that of skin psoriasis, which was mainly associated with activation of TNFα/L-17/IL-22-induced keratinocyte response genes. We also detected differences in expression of gene-sets involving negative regulation, epigenetic regulation, epidermal differentiation, and dendritic cell or Th1/Th17/Th22-related T-cell processes

    Efficacy and safety of low-dose oral minoxidil in the management of androgenetic alopecia

    Treating alopecia can be challenging. The available treatments are topical minoxidil, low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM), and 5-α reductase inhibitors like finasteride and dutasteride. Only topical minoxidil and finasteride 1 mg daily are FDA-approved, while the rest are used off-label. Recent research has suggested that oral minoxidil may be a safe and effective treatment for both female androgenetic alopecia (female AGA) and male androgenetic alopecia (male AGA). In this review, we explore the pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of oral minoxidil. Additionally, we discuss its effectiveness compared to other treatments available for female AGA and male AGA. LDOM has demonstrated a favorable efficacy and safety profile in several trials. Subsequently, its use for the treatment of male AGA and female AGA is increasing. However, its use remains off-label, and through increased usage, we will get a better idea of the best dosage and monitoring guidelines. LDOM has also been used with some effectiveness in other forms of hair loss.</p

    COVID-19 impacts on mobility and travel demand

    Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many travel restriction policies were implemented to reduce further spread of the virus. These measures significantly affected travel demand to levels which could not have been anticipated by most planners in transportation agencies. As the pandemic has proven to have significant short-term impacts, it is anticipated that some of these impacts may translate to longer-term impacts on overall travel behavior and the movement of people and goods. Beyond the pandemic, the observed travel patterns during this period also provides a great opportunity for planners to assess policies such as work from home and remote learning as strategies to manage travel demand. This study provides a scenario analysis framework to re-evaluate travel demand forecasts under uncertain future conditions using the Maryland Statewide Transportation Model (MSTM). Model parameters associated with working from home, household income, changes in discretionary travel, distance learning, increased e-commerce, vehicle occupancy and mode choice were identified. Parameter values were assigned under the various scenarios using employer surveys on workforce teleworking and observed data on e-commerce growth and shopping behavior. The main findings of this study capture the sensitivities of systemwide vehicle miles travel, and vehicle hours travel under different scenarios and implications on future investment decisions. The study found that future investments under the scenarios remain beneficial to systemwide performance and therefore justified. Although this study focuses on the state of Maryland, the scenario framework and parameter definitions can be used in other states or agencies within a travel demand model environment
