    The effect of various carbon sources on the growth of single-celled cyanophyta

    In 19 strains of unicellular blue-green algae, belonging to general Synechococcus, Synechocystis, Aphanocapsa and Aphanothece, the capacity of growth under mixotrophic conditions in mineral media with organic carbon sources (carbohydrates, polyols) was investigated. At moderate light intensity (1200 lx) and 0.5% of carbon source there was revealed: (1) Stimulation of growth; (2) Partial or complete inhibition of growth; (3) No influence of carbohydrate and polyols on the growth of some algae strains. Three physiological groups for the investigated strains have been outlined on the basis of data obtained. The possibility of using the differences revealed in classification of unicellular blue-green algae is discussed

    Russian City in Manchuria through the Eyes of the Minister of War: A.N. Kuropatkin’s Visit to Harbin in 1903

    The author considers the history of Russian Imperial Minister of War A.N. Kuropatkin’s visit to Harbin in 1903. The study is based on the Minister's diaries which he kept during the trip, a set of documents he built during the trip, as well as his official report written after the trip. The documents are stored in the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA) and have been used for the for the first time for historical research in this article. A. N. Kuropatkin visited the new Russian city which was under construction in Manchuria from 1898 as part of his trip to the Far East, and described in detail his inspection of the city, as well as its quay, military barracks, and civil facilities, as well as the maneuvers of the troops of the Harbin garrison and border guards. The study gives a description of the barracks accommodation of the troops in the city and the problems of organizing barracks construction at that time. It is noted that A.N. Kuropatkin considered Harbin as the most important commercial and strategic center of northern Manchuria. The article provides data on the number and national composition of the city population, as well as a description of the first time the Russian Minister of War negotiated with the Chinese governor-general of the Jilin province. The studied material illustrates A.N. Kuropatkin’s understanding of the impossibility of organizing the management of the non-Russian population of the region without preserving authority the Chinese local officials and therefore there was a need to establish close cooperation with them. It is also pointed out the Minister of War had hoped increase the coordination of representatives of the Russians at the local level including Russia’s local military, diplomatic, and financial departments. A.N. Kuropatkin’s in his conclusions shows his conviction of the relative ineffectiveness of exclusively peaceful penetration into Manchuria without support by military force, a discovery which prompted him to actively engage in the further development of Harbin’s military infrastructure

    Probing dynamics of HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein/target hexanucleotide complexes by 2-aminopurine

    The nucleocapsid protein (NC) plays an important role in HIV-1, mainly through interactions with the genomic RNA and its DNA copies. Though the structures of several complexes of NC with oligonucleotides (ODNs) are known, detailed information on the ODN dynamics in the complexes is missing. To address this, we investigated the steady state and time-resolved fluorescence properties of 2-aminopurine (2Ap), a fluorescent adenine analog introduced at positions 2 and 5 of AACGCC and AATGCC sequences. In the absence of NC, 2Ap fluorescence was strongly quenched in the flexible ODNs, mainly through picosecond to nanosecond dynamic quenching by its neighboring bases. NC strongly restricted the ODN flexibility and 2Ap local mobility, impeding the collisions of 2Ap with its neighbors and thus, reducing its dynamic quenching. Phe16→Ala and Trp37→Leu mutations largely decreased the ability of NC to affect the local dynamics of 2Ap at positions 2 and 5, respectively, while a fingerless NC was totally ineffective. The restriction of 2Ap local mobility was thus associated with the NC hydrophobic platform at the top of the folded fingers. Since this platform supports the NC chaperone properties, the restriction of the local mobility of the bases is likely a mechanistic component of these properties

    Analytic model for a frictional shallow-water undular bore

    We use the integrable Kaup-Boussinesq shallow water system, modified by a small viscous term, to model the formation of an undular bore with a steady profile. The description is made in terms of the corresponding integrable Whitham system, also appropriately modified by friction. This is derived in Riemann variables using a modified finite-gap integration technique for the AKNS scheme. The Whitham system is then reduced to a simple first-order differential equation which is integrated numerically to obtain an asymptotic profile of the undular bore, with the local oscillatory structure described by the periodic solution of the unperturbed Kaup-Boussinesq system. This solution of the Whitham equations is shown to be consistent with certain jump conditions following directly from conservation laws for the original system. A comparison is made with the recently studied dissipationless case for the same system, where the undular bore is unsteady.Comment: 24 page

    Improving the prediction of environmental fate of engineered nanomaterials by fractal modelling

    A critical analysis of the available engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) environmental fate modelling approaches indicates that existing tools do not satisfactorily account for the complexities of nanoscale phenomena. Fractal modelling (FM) can complement existing kinetic fate models by including more accurate interpretations of shape and structure, density and collision efficiency parameters to better describe homo- and heteroaggregation. Pathways to including hierarchical symmetry concepts and a route to establishing a structural classification of nanomaterials based on FM are proposed

    Whitham systems and deformations

    We consider the deformations of Whitham systems including the "dispersion terms" and having the form of Dubrovin-Zhang deformations of Frobenius manifolds. The procedure is connected with B.A. Dubrovin problem of deformations of Frobenius manifolds corresponding to the Whitham systems of integrable hierarchies. Under some non-degeneracy requirements we suggest a general scheme of the deformation of the hyperbolic Whitham systems using the initial non-linear system. The general form of the deformed Whitham system coincides with the form of the "low-dispersion" asymptotic expansions used by B.A. Dubrovin and Y. Zhang in the theory of deformations of Frobenius manifolds.Comment: 27 pages, Late
