Harper operators, Fermi curves, and Picard-Fuchs equations
This paper is a continuation of the work on the spectral problem of Harper
operator using algebraic geometry. We continue to discuss the local monodromy
of algebraic Fermi curves based on Picard-Lefschetz formula. The density of
states over approximating components of Fermi curves satisfies a Picard-Fuchs
equation. By the property of Landen transformation, the density of states has a
Lambert series as the quarter period. A -expansion of the energy level can

Time Delays in the Synchronization of Chaotic Coupled Systems with Feedback
The synchronized excitable behavior of two coupled chaotic diode lasers with
feedback was experimental and numerically studied. We determine the relation
between the observed delay times in synchronized Low Frequency Fluctuation

An analytical model for the accretion of dark matter subhalos
An analytical model is developed for the mass function of cold dark matter
subhalos at the time of accretion and for the distribution of their accretion
times. Our model is based on the model of Zhao et al. (2009) for the median
assembly histories of dark matter halos, combined with a simple log-normal
distribution to describe the scatter in the main-branch mass at a given time
for halos of the same final mass. Our model is simple, and can be used to
predict the un-evolved subhalo mass function, the mass function of subhalos
accreted at a given time, the accretion-time distribution of subhalos of a
given initial mass, and the frequency of major mergers as a function of time.
We test our model using high-resolution cosmological -body simulations, and
find that our model predictions match the simulation results remarkably well.
Finally, we discuss the implications of our model for the evolution of subhalos
in their hosts and for the construction of a self-consistent model to link

Mutual optical injection in coupled DBR laser pairs
We report an experimental study of nonlinear effects, characteristic of mutual optical coupling, in an ultra-short coupling regime observed in a distributed Bragg reflector laser pair fabricated on the same chip. Optical feedback is amplified via a double pass through a common onchip optical amplifier, which introduces further nonlinear phenomena. Optical coupling has been introduced via back reflection from a cleaveended fibre. The coupling may be varied in strength by varying the distance of the fibre from the output of the chip, without significantly affecting the coupling time. © 2008 Optical. Society of America
Low-bit Shift Network for End-to-End Spoken Language Understanding
Deep neural networks (DNN) have achieved impressive success in multiple
domains. Over the years, the accuracy of these models has increased with the
proliferation of deeper and more complex architectures. Thus, state-of-the-art
solutions are often computationally expensive, which makes them unfit to be
deployed on edge computing platforms. In order to mitigate the high
computation, memory, and power requirements of inferring convolutional neural
networks (CNNs), we propose the use of power-of-two quantization, which
quantizes continuous parameters into low-bit power-of-two values. This reduces
computational complexity by removing expensive multiplication operations and
with the use of low-bit weights. ResNet is adopted as the building block of our
solution and the proposed model is evaluated on a spoken language understanding
(SLU) task. Experimental results show improved performance for shift neural
network architectures, with our low-bit quantization achieving 98.76 \% on the
test set which is comparable performance to its full-precision counterpart and

The Role of Limited English Proficiency and Access to Health Insurance and Health Care in the Affordable Care Act Era
Purpose: Limited English proficiency adversely impacts people\u27s ability to access health services. This study examines the association between English language proficiency and insurance access and use of a usual care provider after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Methods: Using cross-sectional data from the 2016 Medical Panel Expenditures Survey, we identified 24,099 adults (weighted n=240,035,048) and categorized them by self-reported English-language proficiency. We classified participants according to responses to: How well do you speak English? Would you say... Very well; well; Not well; Not at all? (having limited English proficiency: not well; not at all, English proficient: well; very well; and English only: not applicable) and What language do you speak at home? Would you say... English, Spanish, Other. Using these two recoded variables, we created a variable with five categories: (1) Spanish speaking, with limited English proficiency, (2) other language speaking, with limited English proficiency, (3) Spanish speaking, English proficient, (4) other language speaking, English proficient, and (5) English only. Health insurance and usual care provider were determined by self-report.
Results: Among those \u3c 65 years, the percent covered by public insurance (Spanish: 21%, Other languages: 28%, English only 14%), who were uninsured (Spanish: 46%, Other languages: 17%, English only: 8%), and who lacked a usual care provider (Spanish: 45%, Other languages: 35%, English only: 26%) differed by English language proficiency. Among those \u3e /=65 years, fewer people with limited English proficiency relative to English only were dually covered by Medicare and private insurance (Spanish: 12%, Other languages: 15%, English only: 59%), and a higher percent lacked a usual care provider (Spanish: 15%, Other languages: 11%, English only: 7%). Differences persisted with adjustment for covariates.
Conclusion: Post the ACA, persons with limited English proficiency remain at a risk of being uninsured relative to those who only speak English
Spin Transfer from a Ferromagnet into a Semiconductor through an Oxide barrier
We present results on the magnetoresistance of the system Ni/Al203/n-doped
Si/Al2O3/Ni in fabricated nanostructures. The results at temperature of 14K
reveal a 75% magnetoresistance that decreases in value up to approximately 30K
where the effect disappears. We observe minimum resistance in the antiparallel
configurations of the source and drain of Ni. As a possibility, it seems to
indicate the existence of a magnetic state at the Si/oxide interface. The
average spin diffusion length obtained is of 650 nm approximately. Results are
compared to the window of resistances that seems to exist between the tunnel
barrier resistance and two threshold resistances but the spin transfer seems to
work in the range and outside the two thresholds
