Acute myelofibrosis is characterized by pancytopenia of sudden onset, megakaryocytic hyperplasia, extensive bone marrow fibrosis, and the absence of organomegaly. Acute myelofibrosis in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is extremely rare. We report a 4-year-old boy who was diagnosed as having acute massive myelofibrosis and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Performing bone marrow aspiration in this patient was difficult (a “dry tap”), and the diagnosis was established by means of a bone marrow biopsy and immunohistopathologic analysis. The prognostic significance of acute myelofibrosis in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is not clear

Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between prevalence of anxiety, depressive disorder symptoms and some sociodemographic variables in the final year of high-school students, secondly to determine the socio-economic and cultural factors which affect choosing professions among the high school senior students in the province of Van. Methods: In this context, the study was performed in the provincial center of Van in the second semester of 2011. Unpaired t test and one way Anova test were used for statistical analysis. Socio-demographic Information Form, Awareness of Career Choice Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were applied to a total of 412 students. Results: In this study BAI and BDI scores were 15.4±13.3 and 15.3±12.8 respectively. BAI scores of the students in Anatolian high school were found higher than the normal high school. Both the anxiety and depressive levels of female students were higher than the males. The mean age was 16,8 years, 73.8% of whom were male. In 58% of the students’ BAI point, in 66% BDI point were higher than 41; and in 37% BDI point were higher than 17. Female students had higher BAI points. There was a positive correlation between BAI and BDI points. Conclusion: It was noticed in our study that the great amount of anxiety discovered in last grade high school students affect. The student’s job choice negatively. We think that providing last grade high school students with guidance service about job selection will be useful

Aim: SARS CoV-2 transmission in healthcare personnel was first reported on January 20, 2020. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiety levels experienced by healthcare personnel in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic and the factors affecting these levels.Material and Methods: A survey investigating sociodemographic features and examining anxiety levels was conducted among approximately 1000 healthcare personnel who were expected to take active roles in the pandemic across Turkey. The survey was conducted in three stages: before the pandemic spread to Turkey, at the beginning of the pandemic and when the pandemic became prominent. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors affecting anxiety and predictors of anxiety levels. Results: In the first survey, always (odds ratio, 15.781; p<0.01) and often (odds ratio, 5.365; p<0.05) media use, in the second survey media use (p<0.05) and profession (odds ratio, 0.021; p<0.05) and in the third survey, marital status (odds ratio, 17.716; p<0.01) and gender (odds ratio, 4.431; p<0.05) were determined as the predictors of anxiety related to COVID-19.Discussion: As a result of this study, healthcare personnel groups were defined (women, nurses, married people) who need special intervention and support to provide spiritual comfort when working on the front line in the fight against COVID-19. Further comprehensive studies are needed of the extent of psychological support required by healthcare personnel and to whom and how this support should be provided

SNUPN deficiency causes a recessive muscular dystrophy due to RNA mis-splicing and ECM dysregulation

SNURPORTIN-1, encoded by SNUPN, plays a central role in the nuclear import of spliceosomal small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. However, its physiological function remains unexplored. In this study, we investigate 18 children from 15 unrelated families who present with atypical muscular dystrophy and neurological defects. Nine hypomorphic SNUPN biallelic variants, predominantly clustered in the last coding exon, are ascertained to segregate with the disease. We demonstrate that mutant SPN1 failed to oligomerize leading to cytoplasmic aggregation in patients’ primary fibroblasts and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutant cell lines. Additionally, mutant nuclei exhibit defective spliceosomal maturation and breakdown of Cajal bodies. Transcriptome analyses reveal splicing and mRNA expression dysregulation, particularly in sarcolemmal components, causing disruption of cytoskeletal organization in mutant cells and patient muscle tissues. Our findings establish SNUPN deficiency as the genetic etiology of a previously unrecognized subtype of muscular dystrophy and provide robust evidence of the role of SPN1 for muscle homeostasis

    No full text
Objective: To evaluate the hearing and Eustachian tube functions (ETF) of hot air balloon (HAB) pilots, who are exposed to high altitude occupationally. Materials and methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional controlled study. Thirty HAB pilots and 30 healthy volunteers were included. Pure tone audiometry and speech discrimination scores (SDS) were used to assess the hearing function. Pure tone average (PTA) was calculated using the hearing thresholds (HT) at the frequencies 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. Tympanometry and automatic Williams test (ETF1) were conducted to assess the ETF of the participants. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) was defined as the change of tympanometric peak pressure (TPP) at rest (P1) less than in 10 decapascals (daPa) with Valsalva (P2) and Toynbee (P3) maneuvers. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire-7 (ETDQ-7) was also administrated. Results: Mean ages of the participants were 32.03 +8.12 and 32.33 +9.47 years in the HAB and control groups, respectively ( p = 0.865). HTs, PTAs, SDSs, P1, P2, P2-P1 and P1-P3 values were similar in the groups ( p > 0.05). P3 values in both ears were significantly higher in the HAB group compared to the control group ( p = 0.018, p = 0.002). Positive correlations were detected between the duration of the experience of HAB pilots and their HTs at 4 kHz and 8 kHz ( p < 0.05) The prevalence of ETD in at least one ear was 83.7% and in both ears was 43.3% in the HAB group, both of which were significantly higher than the control group ( p = 0.001, p = 0.049). The ETDQ-7 scores were also higher in the HAB group compared to the control group ( p < 0.001). Conclusion: Both the subjective and objective measures of ETF indicate that ETD is common among the HAB pilots. However, the hearing functions of those seem to be unaffected.
