    Polynomial Path Orders

    This paper is concerned with the complexity analysis of constructor term rewrite systems and its ramification in implicit computational complexity. We introduce a path order with multiset status, the polynomial path order POP*, that is applicable in two related, but distinct contexts. On the one hand POP* induces polynomial innermost runtime complexity and hence may serve as a syntactic, and fully automatable, method to analyse the innermost runtime complexity of term rewrite systems. On the other hand POP* provides an order-theoretic characterisation of the polytime computable functions: the polytime computable functions are exactly the functions computable by an orthogonal constructor TRS compatible with POP*.Comment: LMCS version.     Frequency Estimation Of The First Pinna Notch In Head-Related Transfer Functions With A Linear Anthropometric Model

    The relation between anthropometric parameters and Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) features, especially those due to the pinna, are not fully understood yet. In this paper we apply signal processing techniques to extract the frequencies of the main pinna notches (known as N1, N2, and N3) in the frontal part of the median plane and build a model relating them to 13 different anthropometric parameters of the pinna, some of which depend on the elevation angle of the sound source. Results show that while the considered anthropometric parameters are not able to approximate with sufficient accuracy neither the N2 nor the N3 frequency, eight of them are sufficient for modeling the frequency of N1 within a psychoacoustically acceptable margin of error. In particular, distances between the ear canal and the outer helix border are the most important parameters for predicting N1

    Existing indicators of entrepreneurial activity (such as the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Entrepreneurship Barometer, FORA.s Entrepreneurship Index, OECD and Economic Commission.s sets of indicators, among others) and several variables that have been considered good proxies for entrepreneurship during the last decades seem to be unsuitable to capture the complex relationship among economic, social, and demographic factors driving entrepreneurial activity.In order to suggest a consistent methodology for measuring entrepreneurship, we review some of the most well-known theoretical dimensions of entrepreneurship and a selection of associated indicators is proposed. Indicators and measures are grouped under theoretical categories and a set of entrepreneurship indicators is constructed using multivariate statistical analysis (Consensus PCA based on NIPALS, with an extension of Probability PCA for dealing with missing values) for a panel of developed and developing countries.entrepreneurship, index, principal components analysis

    A Combination Framework for Complexity

    In this paper we present a combination framework for polynomial complexity analysis of term rewrite systems. The framework covers both derivational and runtime complexity analysis. We present generalisations of powerful complexity techniques, notably a generalisation of complexity pairs and (weak) dependency pairs. Finally, we also present a novel technique, called dependency graph decomposition, that in the dependency pair setting greatly increases modularity. We employ the framework in the automated complexity tool TCT. TCT implements a majority of the techniques found in the literature, witnessing that our framework is general enough to capture a very brought setting

    Evolutionary design of a full–envelope flight control system for an unstable fighter aircraft

    The use of an evolutionary algorithm in the framework of H∞ control theory is being considered as a means for synthesizing controller gains that minimize a weighted combination of the infinite-norm of the sensitivity function (for disturbance attenuation requirements) and complementary sensitivity function (for robust stability requirements) at the same time. The case study deals with the stability and control augmentation of an unstable high-performance jet aircraft. Constraints on closed-loop response are also enforced, that represent typical requirements on airplane handling qualities, that makes the control law synthesis process more demanding. Gain scheduling is required, in order to obtain satisfactory performance over the whole flight envelope, so that the synthesis is performed at different reference trim conditions, for several values of the dynamic pressure, Q, used as the scheduling parameter. Nonetheless, the dynamic behaviour of the aircraft may exhibit significant variations when flying at different altitudes h, even for the same value of the dynamic pressure, so that a trade-off is required between different feasible controllers synthesized for a given value of Q, but different h. A multi-objective search is thus considered for the determination of the best suited solution to be introduced in the scheduling of the control law. The obtained results are then tested on a longitudinal nonlinear model of the aircraft

    On Sharing, Memoization, and Polynomial Time (Long Version)

    We study how the adoption of an evaluation mechanism with sharing and memoization impacts the class of functions which can be computed in polynomial time. We first show how a natural cost model in which lookup for an already computed value has no cost is indeed invariant. As a corollary, we then prove that the most general notion of ramified recurrence is sound for polynomial time, this way settling an open problem in implicit computational complexity

    Comparative study on the application of evolutionary optimization techniques to orbit transfer maneuvers

    Orbit transfer maneuvers are here considered as benchmark cases for comparing performance of different optimization techniques in the framework of direct methods. Two different classes of evolutionary algorithms, a conventional genetic algorithm and an estimation of distribution method, are compared in terms of performance indices statistically evaluated over a prescribed number of runs. At the same time, two different types of problem representations are considered, a first one based on orbit propagation and a second one based on the solution of Lambert’s problem for direct transfers. In this way it is possible to highlight how problem representation affects the capabilities of the considered numerical approaches
