Scapular body fracturesâshould we be fixing more of these?
The question of whether we should be fixing more scapular body fractures originates from the historical preference for nonoperative management of these fractures. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in operative management due to the recognition that scapular malunion can cause significant disability. While the treatment pendulum has shifted away from benign neglect, finding the right balance of surgical aggression remains controversial. In general, the majority of scapula fractures can successfully be treated nonoperatively with excellent functional results. However, numerous case studies exist demonstrating poor outcomes of scapular body or neck fractures with increased deformity. The literature suggests that a glenopolar angle (GPA) less than 20 degrees can lead to a significant decrease in shoulder function. Additionally, retrospective studies using lateral border offset (LBO) greater than >2 cm and angulation >45 degrees as a surgical indication demonstrate functional outcomes with near normal strength and range of motion and low complication rates. While numerous cut-offs for surgical indications have been recommended, all indications are considered relative and treatment should be individualized based on patient characteristics and goals
Measurement of the Gamow-Teller Strength Distribution in 58Co via the 58Ni(t,3He) reaction at 115 MeV/nucleon
Electron capture and beta decay play important roles in the evolution of
pre-supernovae stars and their eventual core collapse. These rates are normally
predicted through shell-model calculations. Experimentally determined strength
distributions from charge-exchange reactions are needed to test modern
shell-model calculations. We report on the measurement of the Gamow-Teller
strength distribution in 58Co from the 58Ni(t,3He) reaction with a secondary
triton beam of an intensity of ~10^6 pps at 115 MeV/nucleon and a resolution of
\~250 keV. Previous measurements with the 58Ni(n,p) and the 58Ni(d,2He)
reactions were inconsistent with each other. Our results support the latter. We
also compare the results to predictions of large-scale shell model calculations
using the KB3G and GXPF1 interactions and investigate the impact of differences
between the various experiments and theories in terms of the weak rates in the
stellar environment. Finally, the systematic uncertainties in the normalization
of the strength distribution extracted from 58Ni(3He,t) are described and turn
out to be non-negligible due to large interferences between the dL=0, dS=1

The Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH): Psychometric Evaluation and Initial Validation of the SSSH Baseline Spirituality Survey
This paper describes the development and initial psychometric testing of the baseline Spirituality Survey (SS-1) from the Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH) which contained a mixture of items selected from validated existing scales and new items generated to measure important constructs not captured by existing instruments. The purpose was to establish the validity of new and existing measures in our racially/ethnically diverse sample. Psychometric properties of the SS-1 were evaluated using standard psychometric analyses in 4,634 SSSH participants. Predictive validity of SS-1 scales was assessed in relation to the physical and mental health component scores from the Short-Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12). Scales exhibited adequate to strong psychometric properties and demonstrated construct and predictive validity. Overall, the correlational findings provide solid evidence that the SS-1 scales are associated with a wide range of relevant R/S attitudes, mental health, and to a lesser degree physical health
A 'Performative' Social Movement: The Emergence of Collective Contentions within Collaborative Governance
The enmeshment of urban movements in networks of collaborative governance has been characterised as a process of co-option in which previously disruptive contentions are absorbed by regimes and reproduced in ways that do not threaten the stability of power relations. Applying a theoretical framework drawn from feminist philosopher Judith Butler this paper directs attention to the development of collective oppositional identities that remain embedded in conventional political processes. In a case study of the English tenants' movement, it investigates the potential of regulatory discourses that draw on market theories of performative voice to offer the collectivising narratives and belief in change that can generate the emotional identification of a social movement. The paper originates the concept of the âperformative social movementâ to denote the contentious claims that continue to emerge from urban movements that otherwise appear quiescent
Characterization of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein reveals multiple functional consequences of the C-terminal domain
Nucleocapsid (N) encoded by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) plays key roles in the replication cycle and is a critical serological marker. Here, we characterize essential biochemical properties of N and describe the utility of these insights in serological studies. We define N domains important for oligomerization and RNA binding and show that N oligomerization provides a high-affinity RNA-binding platform. We also map the RNA-binding interface, showing protection in the N-terminal domain and linker region. In addition, phosphorylation causes reduction of RNA binding and redistribution of N from liquid droplets to loose coils, showing how N-RNA accessibility and assembly may be regulated by phosphorylation. Finally, we find that the C-terminal domain of N is the most immunogenic, based on antibody binding to patient samples. Together, we provide a biochemical description of SARS-CoV-2 N and highlight the value of using N domains as highly specific and sensitive diagnostic markers
A long-term record of early to mid-Paleozoic marine redox change
The extent to which Paleozoic oceans differed from Neoproterozoic oceans and the causal relationship between biological evolution and changing environmental conditions are heavily debated. Here, we report a nearly continuous record of seafloor redox change from the deep-water upper Cambrian to Middle Devonian Road River Group of Yukon, Canada. Bottom waters were largely anoxic in the Richardson trough during the entirety of Road River Group deposition, while independent evidence from iron speciation and Mo/U ratios show that the biogeochemical nature of anoxia changed through time. Both in Yukon and globally, Ordovician through Early Devonian anoxic waters were broadly ferruginous (nonsulfidic), with a transition toward more euxinic (sulfidic) conditions in the midâEarly Devonian (Pragian), coincident with the early diversification of vascular plants and disappearance of graptolites. This ~80-million-year interval of the Paleozoic characterized by widespread ferruginous bottom waters represents a persistence of Neoproterozoic-like marine redox conditions well into the Phanerozoic
The velocity anisotropy - density slope relation
One can solve the Jeans equation analytically for equilibrated dark matter
structures, once given two pieces of input from numerical simulations. These
inputs are 1) a connection between phase-space density and radius, and 2) a
connection between velocity anisotropy and density slope, the \alpha-\beta
relation. The first (phase-space density v.s. radius) has already been analysed
through several different simulations, however the second (\alpha-\beta
relation) has not been quantified yet. We perform a large set of numerical
experiments in order to quantify the slope and zero-point of the \alpha-\beta
relation. We find strong indication that the relation is indeed an attractor.
When combined with the assumption of phase-space being a power-law in radius,
this allows us to conclude that equilibrated dark matter structures indeed have
zero central velocity anisotropy \beta_0 = 0, central density slope of \alpha_0
= -0.8, and outer anisotropy of \beta_\infty = 0.5.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
