Representing Complexity in Part-Whole Relationships within the Foundational Model of Anatomy
The Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) is a frame-based ontology that represents declarative knowledge about the structural organization of the human body. Part-whole relationships play a particularly important role in this representation. In order to assure that knowledge-based applications relying on the FMA as a resource can reason about anatomy, we have modified and enhanced currently available schemes of meronymic relationships. We have introduced and defined distinct partitions for decomposing anatomical structures and attributed the part relationships in order to eliminate ambiguity and enhance specificity in the richness of meronymic relationships within the FMA
Correlation plenoptic imaging
Plenoptic imaging is a promising optical modality that simultaneously
captures the location and the propagation direction of light in order to enable
three-dimensional imaging in a single shot. However, in classical imaging
systems, the maximum spatial and angular resolutions are fundamentally linked;
thereby, the maximum achievable depth of field is inversely proportional to the
spatial resolution. We propose to take advantage of the second-order
correlation properties of light to overcome this fundamental limitation. In
this paper, we demonstrate that the momentum/position correlation of chaotic
light leads to the enhanced refocusing power of correlation plenoptic imaging

Preditores de fibrilação atrial de novo em unidade de cuidados intensivos não cardÃaca
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in patients in a non-cardiac intensive care unit.
METHODS:
A total of 418 hospitalized patients were analyzed between January and September 2016 in a non-cardiac intensive care unit. Clinical characteristics, interventions, and biochemical markers were recorded during hospitalization. In-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay in the intensive care unit were also evaluated.
RESULTS:
A total of 310 patients were included. The mean age of the patients was 61.0 ± 18.3 years, 49.4% were male, and 23.5% presented de novo atrial fibrillation. The multivariate model identified previous stroke (OR = 10.09; p = 0.016) and elevated levels of pro-B type natriuretic peptide (proBNP, OR = 1.28 for each 1,000pg/mL increment; p = 0.004) as independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation. Analysis of the proBNP receiver operating characteristic curve for prediction of de novo atrial fibrillation revealed an area under the curve of 0.816 (p 5,666pg/mL. There were no differences in mortality (p = 0.370), but the lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.002) and stay in the intensive care unit (p = 0.031) were higher in patients with de novo atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS:
A history of previous stroke and elevated proBNP during hospitalization were independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in the polyvalent intensive care unit. The proBNP is a useful and easy- and quick-access tool in the stratification of atrial fibrillation risk.Objetivo:
Avaliar quais os preditores de fibrilação atrial de novo em doentes de uma unidade de cuidados intensivos não cardÃaca.
Métodos:
Foram analisados 418 doentes internados entre janeiro e setembro de 2016 em uma unidade de cuidados intensivos não cardÃaca. Registaram-se as caracterÃsticas clÃnicas, as intervenções efetuadas e os marcadores bioquÃmicos durante a internação. Avaliaram-se ainda a mortalidade hospitalar e o tempo de internação hospitalar e na unidade de cuidados intensivos.
Resultados:
Foram incluÃdos 310 doentes, com média de idades de 61,0 ± 18,3 anos, 49,4% do sexo masculino, 23,5% com fibrilação atrial de novo. O modelo multivariável identificou acidente vascular cerebral prévio (OR de 10,09; p = 0,016) e valores aumentados de proBNP (OR de 1,28 por cada aumento em 1.000pg/mL; p = 0,004) como preditores independentes de fibrilação atrial de novo. A análise por curva CaracterÃstica de Operação do Receptor do proBNP para predição de fibrilação atrial de novo revelou área sob a curva de 0,816 (p 5.666pg/mL. Não se verificaram diferenças na mortalidade (p = 0,370), porém a duração da internação hospitalar (p = 0,002) e na unidade de cuidados intensivos (p = 0,031) foi superior nos doentes com fibrilação atrial de novo.
Conclusões:
História de acidente vascular cerebral prévio e proBNP elevado em internação constituÃram preditores independentes de fibrilação atrial de novo na unidade de cuidados intensivos polivalente. Signal-to-noise properties of correlation plenoptic imaging with chaotic light
Correlation Plenoptic Imaging (CPI) is a novel imaging technique, that
exploits the correlations between the intensity fluctuations of light to
perform the typical tasks of plenoptic imaging (namely, refocusing out-of-focus
parts of the scene, extending the depth of field, and performing 3D
reconstruction), without entailing a loss of spatial resolution. Here, we
consider two different CPI schemes based on chaotic light, both employing ghost
imaging: the first one to image the object, the second one to image the
focusing element. We characterize their noise properties in terms of the
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and compare their performances. We find that the
SNR can be significantly higher and easier to control in the second CPI scheme,
involving standard imaging of the object; under adequate conditions, this
scheme enables reducing by one order of magnitude the number of frames for

Exploring plenoptic properties of correlation imaging with chaotic light
In a setup illuminated by chaotic light, we consider different schemes that
enable to perform imaging by measuring second-order intensity correlations. The
most relevant feature of the proposed protocols is the ability to perform
plenoptic imaging, namely to reconstruct the geometrical path of light
propagating in the system, by imaging both the object and the focusing element.
This property allows to encode, in a single data acquisition, both
multi-perspective images of the scene and light distribution in different
planes between the scene and the focusing element. We unveil the plenoptic
property of three different setups, explore their refocusing potentialities and

Dynamics of Dinitrosyl Iron Complex (DNIC) Formation with Low Molecular Weight Thiols.
Dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) are ubiquitous in mammalian cells and tissues producing nitric oxide (NO) and have been argued to play key physiological and pathological roles. Nonetheless, the mechanism and dynamics of DNIC formation in aqueous media remain only partially understood. Here, we report a stopped-flow kinetics and density functional theory (DFT) investigation of the reaction of NO with ferrous ions and the low molecular weight thiols glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (CysSH) as well as the peptides WCGPC and WCGPY to produce DNICs in pH 7.4 aqueous media. With each thiol, a two-stage reaction pattern is observed. The first stage involves several rapidly established pre-equilibria leading to a ferrous intermediate concluded to have the composition FeII(NO)(RS)2(H2O)x (C). In the second stage, C undergoes rate-limiting, unimolecular autoreduction to give thiyl radical (RS•) plus the mononitrosyl Fe(I) complex FeI(NO)(RS)(H2O)x following the reactivity order of CysSH > WCGPC > WCGPY > GSH. Time course simulations using the experimentally determined kinetics parameters demonstrate that, at a NO flux characteristic of inflammation, DNICs will be rapidly formed from intracellular levels of ferrous iron and thiols. Furthermore, the proposed mechanism offers a novel pathway for S-nitroso thiol (RSNO) formation in a biological environment

Correlation Plenoptic Imaging With Entangled Photons
Plenoptic imaging is a novel optical technique for three-dimensional imaging
in a single shot. It is enabled by the simultaneous measurement of both the
location and the propagation direction of light in a given scene. In the
standard approach, the maximum spatial and angular resolutions are inversely
proportional, and so are the resolution and the maximum achievable depth of
focus of the 3D image. We have recently proposed a method to overcome such
fundamental limits by combining plenoptic imaging with an intriguing
correlation remote-imaging technique: ghost imaging. Here, we theoretically
demonstrate that correlation plenoptic imaging can be effectively achieved by
exploiting the position-momentum entanglement characterizing spontaneous
parametric down-conversion (SPDC) photon pairs. As a proof-of-principle
demonstration, we shall show that correlation plenoptic imaging with entangled
photons may enable the refocusing of an out-of-focus image at the same depth of
focus of a standard plenoptic device, but without sacrificing

The Philippine View of Indonesian Independence: As Reported in Philippine Newspapers
For the Filipinos, seeing Indonesia become independent was like seeing themselves. Filipinos themselves as inspiring their neighbors and at the same time they saw what their country could be. There are various parallelisms not only on the day Indonesia formally entered the community of nations but also through that nations struggle for freedom and independence. Here the Filipinos can see the various paths they may have taken, an armed struggle or a peaceful political negotiation, or both. Indonesians too saw themselves among the Filipinos. Like many Asians, they observed events from the 19th century to the recognition of Philippine sovereignty by the United States. At the same time, both countries entered a neocolonial period with the Philippines entering various agreements with its former colonizer which tied up its prerogatives. The Hague Agreement tried to impose a neocolonial condition by constructing a Netherlands-Indonesian union similar to that of the British Commonwealth of Nations. At the same time, the Netherlands played an old tactic of divide and rule by setting up what appeared to be puppet governments in the various regions of Indonesia in support for itself and denying Indonesia the western part of New Guinea by alleging that the region was not culturally affiliated with the central and western halves of the archipelago. It was an attempt to retain the Netherlands as an Asian power. Like the Philippines Indonesia faced new challenges after independence and most of these involved its former colonizer
