    This Comment examines the use of pre-dispute arbitration clauses in investment contracts. The author argues that, while the United States Arbitration Act mandates the enforcement of arbitration agreements, many courts have refused to enforce investment contract arbitration clauses fearing a lack of investor protection. The author reviews the use of arbitration in the securities industry, as well as the judicial decisions that have impacted its use. The author concludes that, with certain changes in the structure of these clauses, securities industry arbitration clauses should be enforced in order to protect investors and provide a more efficient method of resolving securities disputes

    Synthesis and Characterization of Silver Thione Complexes

    Coordination polymers are repeating units of a coordination complex that have applications as catalysts, conductors, and magnets. In this work, silver (I) was the metal of choice because it behaves similarly to copper (I), which has been studied much more extensively and thione ligands were chosen due to their potential for forming coordination polymers. These coordination complexes with silver were synthesized by combining silver nitrate with thioacetamide, N,N\u27-diphenylthiourea, and 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole. These complexes were characterized via IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Silver thioacetamide was determined to form a coordination complex through the sulfur to form a trigonal crystal lattice while silver methimazole was determined to form a coordination polymer using sulfur as a bridging atom

    Lavas and shallow intrusions near Wenatchee, WA, provide a unique opportunity to study a diverse array of samples that erupted over a 30+ Ma interval in the Cascadia rear arc. Included are two Eocene units, the Wenatchee Pinnacles and Sugarloaf Peak, two Miocene units, Eagle Rock and Burch Mountain, and an undated andesite at Peoh Point. Goals of this study are to use trace and major element data to determine the tectonic setting and petrogenesis of these rocks and identify any compositional differences between there rear-arc sites and the Cascade arc as a whole

    Differential Diagnosis of Abnormal Muscle Gross Anatomy of a Male Cadaver

    The ability of healthcare providers to carefully consider all presentations of illness and injury, draw upon research and knowledge to develop a list of potential diagnoses, and further investigate systems expected to be impacted by these diagnoses, is crucial for accurate identification of a condition and subsequent treatment plans to improve the welfare of patients. In order to determine a possible cause for unusual anatomic changes in multiple regions of the male cadaver used in the University of Montana’s Anatomy and Physiology lab, we performed a differential diagnosis.This research is exempt from IRB approval because the individual is no longer living. Permission was obtained from the Montana Body donation program. To generate preliminary diagnoses, we identified possible conditions associated with our initial observations of the abnormalities in the lower extremities. Further dissections of the colon, the femoral artery, and the heart were completed to evaluate the involvement of the cardiovascular and digestive systems after detecting distension of the lower intestine and a suture in the artery. We noted evidence of renal and vascular disease, prompting additional dissection of the kidneys and brain. Comprehensive assessment of the observed indications, in conjunction with subsequent research into the demographic information related to each preliminary diagnosis, supported the conclusion that stroke as a result of chronic kidney disease and atherosclerosis was the cause of death of the cadaver. This project is highly relevant in the healthcare industry as chronic kidney disease is a global health threat affecting approximately 10% of the adult population, and comorbidities are seldom investigated (Lee et al.) Additionally, the use of cadaver research, as demonstrated in this project, is an invaluable opportunity to those in and entering the medical field to enhance the comprehension of anatomy, physiology, and pathology during the educational process by allowing for the practical application of learned concepts and skills

    Parent and Family Outcomes of PEERS: A Social Skills Intervention for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Raising a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with increased family chaos and parent distress. Successful long-term treatment outcomes are dependent on healthy systemic functioning, but the family impact of treatment is rarely evaluated. The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) is a social skills intervention designed for adolescents with high-functioning ASD. This study assessed the impact of PEERS on family chaos, parenting stress, and parenting self-efficacy via a randomized, controlled trial. Results suggested beneficial effects for the experimental group in the domain of family chaos compared to the waitlist control, while parents in the PEERS experimental group also demonstrated increased parenting self-efficacy. These findings highlight adjunctive family system benefits of PEERS intervention and suggest the need for overall better understanding of parent and family outcomes of ASD interventions

    Computational approach for calculating the probability of eukaryotic translation initiation from ribo-seq data that takes into account leaky scanning

    BACKGROUND: Ribosome profiling (ribo-seq) provides experimental data on the density of elongating or initiating ribosomes at the whole transcriptome level that can be potentially used for estimating absolute levels of translation initiation at individual Translation Initiation Sites (TISs). These absolute levels depend on the mutual organisation of TISs within individual mRNAs. For example, according to the leaky scanning model of translation initiation in eukaryotes, a strong TIS downstream of another strong TIS is unlikely to be productive, since only a few scanning ribosomes would be able to reach the downstream TIS. In order to understand the dependence of translation initiation efficiency on the surrounding nucleotide context, it is important to estimate the strength of TISs independently of their mutual organisation, i.e. to estimate with what probability a ribosome would initiate at a particular TIS. RESULTS: We designed a simple computational approach for estimating the probabilities of ribosomes initiating at individual start codons using ribosome profiling data. The method is based on the widely accepted leaky scanning model of translation initiation in eukaryotes which postulates that scanning ribosomes may skip a start codon if the initiation context is unfavourable and continue on scanning. We tested our approach on three independent ribo-seq datasets obtained in mammalian cultured cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that the method successfully discriminates between weak and strong TISs and that the majority of numerous non-AUG TISs reported recently are very weak. Therefore the high frequency of non-AUG TISs observed in ribosome profiling experiments is due to their proximity to mRNA 5′-ends rather than their strength. Detectable translation initiation at non-AUG codons downstream of AUG codons is comparatively infrequent. The leaky scanning method will be useful for the characterization of differences in start codon selection between tissues, developmental stages and in response to stress condition

    Measuring the Plasticity of Social Approach: A Randomized Controlled Trial of the Effects of the PEERS Intervention on EEG Asymmetry in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders

    This study examined whether the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS: Social skills for teenagers with developmental and autism spectrum disorders: The PEERS treatment manual, Routledge, New York, 2010a) affected neural function, via EEG asymmetry, in a randomized controlled trial of adolescents with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and a group of typically developing adolescents. Adolescents with ASD in PEERS shifted from right-hemisphere gamma-band EEG asymmetry before PEERS to left-hemisphere EEG asymmetry after PEERS, versus a waitlist ASD group. Left-hemisphere EEG asymmetry was associated with more social contacts and knowledge, and fewer symptoms of autism. Adolescents with ASD in PEERS no longer differed from typically developing adolescents in left-dominant EEG asymmetry at post-test. These findings are discussed via the Modifier Model of Autism (Mundy et al. in Res Pract Persons Severe Disabl 32(2):124, 2007), with emphasis on remediating isolation/withdrawal in ASD
