    Effects of sports drinks on the maintenance of physical performance during 3 tennis matches: A randomized controlled study

    Background: Tennis tournaments often involve playing several consecutive matches interspersed with short periods of recovery. Objective: The objective of this study was firstly to assess the impact of several successive tennis matches on the physical performance of competitive players and secondly to evaluate the potential of sports drinks to minimize the fatigue induced by repeated matches. Methods: This was a crossover, randomized controlled study. Eight male regionally-ranked tennis players participated in this study. Players underwent a series of physical tests to assess their strength, speed, power and endurance following the completion of three tennis matches each of two hours duration played over three consecutive half-days (1.5 day period for each condition). In the first condition the players consumed a sports drink before, during and after each match; in the second, they drank an identical volume of placebo water. The results obtained were compared with the third 'rest' condition in which the subjects did not play any tennis. Main outcomes measured were maximal isometric strength and fatigability of knee and elbow extensors, 20-m sprint speed, jumping height, specific repeated sprint ability test and hand grip strength. Results: The physical test results for the lower limbs showed no significant differences between the three conditions. Conversely, on the upper limbs the EMG data showed greater fatigue of the triceps brachii in the placebo condition compared to the rest condition, while the ingestion of sports drinks attenuated this fatigue. Conclusions: This study has demonstrated for the first time that, when tennis players are adequately hydrated and ingest balanced meals between matches, then no large drop in physical performance is observed even during consecutive competitive matches

    Current developments at IRSN on computational tools dedicated to assessing doses for both internal and external exposure

    The paper presents the OEDIPE (French acronym that stands for tool for personalised internal dose assessment) and SESAME (for simulation of external source accident with medical images) computational tools, dedicated to internal and external dose assessment, respectively, and currently being developed at the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety. The originality of OEDIPE and SESAME, by using voxel phantoms in association with Monte Carlo codes, lies in their ability to construct personalised voxel phantoms from medical images and automatically generate the Monte Carlo input file and visualise the expected results. OEDIPE simulates in vivo measurements to improve their calibration, and calculates the dose distribution taking both internal contamination and internal radiotherapy cases into account. SESAME enables radiological overexposure doses to be reconstructed, as also victim, source and accident environment modelling. The paper presents the principles on which these tools function and an overview of specificities and results linked to their fields of application. © The Author 2005.     Application of new imaging and calculation techniques to activity and dose assessment in the case of a 106Ru contaminated wound

    The aim of this paper is to describe the dosimetric evaluation of a point contamination that occurred in a laboratory during the examination of an irradiated sample. The incident led to point contamination of the operator's finger due to the presence of mainly 106Ru, with its progeny, 106Rh. The paper reports on the activity and dose assessment, performed using several methods. The measured activity was obtained using a conventional device based on a germanium detector and confirmed using software developed at IRSN, based on reconstruction of voxel phantom associated with the Monte Carlo N-Particle code (MCNP) for in vivo measurement. Two dose assessment calculations were performed using both analytical and Monte Carlo methods, applying the same approach as for activity assessment based on the personal computational phantom of the finger. The results are compared, followed by a discussion on the suitability of the tools described in this study

    Effects of pre-exercise, endurance, and recovery designer sports drinks on performance during tennis tournament simulation

    Sports drinks are often used before, during, and after tennis tournaments, but their ability to influence physiological and psychological variables and the characteristics of tennis match play remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of ingesting specially formulated pre-exercise, endurance, and recovery sports drinks on glycemia and performance indices during a simulated tennis tournament. Eight well-trained male tennis players performed two 3-match round-robin tennis tournaments although ingesting sports drinks (SPDs) or placebos (PLAs) before, during, and after each match (crossover study design). Before the first tournament, match and drink order were randomized (SPDs or PLAs first) and players were placed under controlled nutritional and hydration conditions. Glycemia, heart rate response, rate of perceived exertion, and notational/match analysis were assessed during each match. Sports drinks maintained higher glycemia levels during match 2 and 3 of the tennis tournament compared with PLAs (p , 0.01). Moreover, higher mean heart rates (p , 0.01) and stroke frequencies (p , 0.01) concomitantly with lower rates of perceived exertion (p , 0.01) were recorded throughout the duration of the tournament, when players used the SPDs. During a 3-match tennis tournament, SPDs allow higher stroke frequency during play, with decreased rates of perceived exertion.© 2013 National Strength and Conditioning Association

    Effects of sepsis on mast cells in rat dura mater: influence of L-NAME and VIP

    1. The influence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis on the various mast cell phenotypes of rat dura mater were examined both by immunohistochemical and biochemical methods. 2. Three different populations of mast cells were identified in control rats: connective tissue type mast cells (CTMC) which contain rat mast cell protease1 (RMCP1), histamine, serotonin and heparin, mucosal type mast cells (MMC) which contain RMCP2, histamine and serotonin, and intermediate type which contains both RMCP1 and RMCP2 and probably various proportions of amines and heparin. 3. LPS (25 mg kg(−1) i.p.) caused changes in the proportions of the various types of mast cells. The number of MMC and intermediate type mast cells significantly increased and the number of mast cells immunopositive for both heparin and serotonin significantly decreased. Biochemical analysis showed that the histamine concentration of dura increased while its serotonin concentration decreased. 4. While vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) (25 ng kg(−1) i.p.) appears to potentiate LPS effects on dura mater mast cells, non-selective inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthase by N(g)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (30 mg kg(−1) i.p.) did not influence sepsis-induced mast cell changes. 5. These findings suggest that mast cells of dura mater may play a role in brain protection during sepsis
