Rare B decays in a single Universal Extra Dimension scenario
Exclusive rare ,
and decays are studied within the Applequist-Cheng-Dobrescu
model, an extension of the Standard Model in presence of universal extra
dimensions. In the case of a single universal extra dimension compactified on a
circle of radius R, we study the dependence of several observables on 1/R, and
discuss whether the hadronic uncertainty due to the form factors obscures or
not such a dependence. We find that, using present data, it is possible in many
cases to put a sensible lower bound to 1/R, the most stringent one coming from

O presente
trabalho visa expor e discorrer sobre as hipóteses do autor quanto à
urbanização e os desenvolvimentos do território nordestino a partir do

Quenched lattice calculation of the vector channel B --> D* l nu decay rate
We calculate, in the continuum limit of quenched lattice QCD, the form factor
that enters the decay rate of the semileptonic decay B --> D* l nu. By using
the step scaling method (SSM), previously introduced to handle two scale
problems in lattice QCD, and by adopting flavor twisted boundary conditions we
extract F(w) at finite momentum transfer and at the physical values of the
heavy quark masses. Our results can be used in order to extract the CKM matrix
element Vcb by the experimental decay rate without model dependent
extrapolations. The value of Vcb agrees with the one obtained from the B --> D
l nu channel and makes us confident that the quenched approximation well
applies to these transitions.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
The Riddle of Polarization in Transitions
Measurements of polarization fractions in transitions, with a
light vector meson, show that the longitudinal amplitude dominates in , , and decays and
not in the penguin induced decays , .
We study the effect of rescattering mediated by charmed resonances, finding
that in it can be responsible of the suppression of the
longitudinal amplitude. For the decay we find that the
longitudinal fraction cannot be too large without invoking new effects.Comment: LaTex, 14 pages, 3 figure
Long-distance effects and final state interactions in B to pion pion K and B to K anti-K K decays
B decays into pion pion K and K anti-K K, where the pion-pion and anti-K K
pairs interact in isospin zero S-wave, are studied in the pion-pion effective
mass range from threshold to 1.2 GeV. The interplay of strong and weak decay
amplitudes is analyzed using an unitary pion-pion and K anti-K coupled channel
model. Final state interactions are described in terms of four scalar form
factors constrained by unitarity and chiral perturbation theory. Branching
ratios for the B decay into f0(980)K, calculated in the factorization
approximation with some QCD corrections, are too low as compared to recent
data. In order to improve agreement with experiment, we introduce long-distance
contributions called charming penguins. Effective mass distributions, branching
ratios and asymmetries are compared with the existing data from BaBar and Belle
collaborations. A particularly large negative asymmetry in charged B decays is
predicted for one set of the charming penguin amplitudes.Comment: Comments: 13 pages, 4 eps figures, 1 table, needs axodraw.sty,

Semi-automated stereoradiographic upper limb 3D reconstructions using a combined parametric and statistical model: a preliminary study
PURPOSE: Quantitative assessment of 3D clinical indices may be crucial for elbow surgery planning. 3D parametric modeling from bi-planar radiographs was successfully proposed for spine and lower limb clinical investigation as an alternative for CT-scan. The aim of this study was to adapt this method to the upper limb with a preliminary validation. METHODS: CT-scan 3D models of humerus, radius and ulna were obtained from 20 cadaveric upper limbs and yielded parametric models made of geometric primitives. Primitives were defined by descriptor parameters (diameters, angles...) and correlations between these descriptors were found. Using these correlations, a semi-automated reconstruction method of humerus using bi-planar radiographs was achieved: a 3D personalized parametric model was built, from which clinical parameters were computed [orientation and projections on bone surface of trochlea sulcus to capitulum (CTS) axis, trochlea sulcus anterior offset and width of distal humeral epiphysis]. This method was evaluated by accuracy compared to CT-scan and reproducibility. RESULTS: Points-to-surface mean distance was 0.9 mm (2 RMS = 2.5 mm). For clinical parameters, mean differences were 0.4-1.9 mm and from 1.7° to 2.3°. All parameters except from angle formed by CTS axis and bi-epicondylar axis in transverse plane were reproducible. Reconstruction time was about 5 min. CONCLUSIONS: The presented method provides access to morphological upper limb parameters with very low level of radiation. Preliminary in vitro validation for humerus showed that it is fast and accurate enough to be used in clinical daily practice as an alternative to CT-scan for total elbow arthroplasty pre operative evaluation
On the motivations for Merleau-Ponty’s ontological research
This paper attempts to clarify Merleau-Ponty’s later work by tracing a hitherto overlooked set of concerns that were of key consequence for the formulation of his ontological research. I argue that his ontology can be understood as a response to a set of problems originating in reflections on the intersubjective use of language in dialogue, undertaken in the early 1950s. His study of dialogue disclosed a structure of meaning-formation and pointed towards a theory of truth (both recurring ontological topics) that post-Phenomenology premises could not account for. A study of dialogue shows that speakers’ positions are interchangeable, that speaking subjects are active and passive in varying degrees, and that the intentional roles of subjects and objects are liable to shift or ‘transgress’ themselves. These observations anticipate the concepts of ‘reversibility’ and ‘narcissism’, his later view of activity and passivity, and his later view of intentionality, and sharpened the need to adopt an intersubjective focus in ontological research
Y(4140): Possible options
We discuss possible options for interpreting the newly observed state Y(4140)
by the CDF collaboration in decay above the
threshold, and argue that it is more likely to be a
- molecular state or an exotic () hybrid
charmonium. We have discussed decay modes which would allow unambiguous
identification of the hybrid charmonium option.Comment: 3 pages Revte
Bounding effective parameters in the chiral Lagrangian for excited heavy mesons
We use recent experimental data on charmed mesons to constrain three coupling
constants in the effective lagrangian describing the interactions of excited
heavy-light mesons with light pseudoscalar mesons at order .
Predictions in the beauty sector are also derived.Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 1 eps figur
