A process chain for integrating microfluidic interconnection elements by micro- overmoulding of thermoplastic elastomers

Get PDF
This paper presents a process chain for in-line integration of microfluidic interconnection elements by a variant of micro-injection moulding (mu IM). A SEBS-based thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) was moulded over polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to produce a hybrid microfluidic structure with an aspect ratio of 2. The process chain implemented micro-milling for fabricating micro-structured tool inserts, and mu IM and micro-overmoulding was used for replication. A two-plate mould was used for moulding the substrate, whilst a three-plate mould with a replaceable insert was used for TPE overmoulding. The presented application was an interconnect system for a microfluidic device, which enabled direct fitting of standard tubes into microfluidic substrates. A leakage test showed that the interconnection was leak-proof within a range of flow rates between 0.32 and 0.62 ml min(-1)

Novel Method for Improving the Capacity of Optical MIMO System Using MGDM

In current local area networks, multimode fibers (MMFs), primarily graded index (GI) MMFs, are the main types of fibers employed for data communications. Due to their enormous bandwidth, it is considered that they are the main channel medium that can offer broadband multiservices using optical multiplexing techniques. Amongst these, mode group diversity multiplexing (MGDM) has been proposed as a way to integrate various services over an MMF network by exciting different groups of modes that can be used as independent and parallel communication channels. In this paper, we study optical multiple-input–multiple-output (O-MIMO) systems using MGDM techniques while also optimizing the launching conditions of light at the fiber inputs and the spot size, radial offset, angular offset, wavelength, and the radii of the segment areas of the detectors. We propose a new approach based on the optimization of launching and detection conditions in order to increase the capacity of an O-MIMO link using the MGDM technique. We propose a (3 timestimes 3) O-MIMO system, where our simulation results show significant improvement in GI MMFs' capacity compared with existing O-MIMO systems. Creating movable interfaces by micro-powder injection moulding

Get PDF
This paper presents a novel in situ technique to produce articulated components with high-precision, micro-scale movable interfaces by micro-powder injection moulding (μPIM). The presented process route is based on the use of micro-scale sacrificial layer between the movable subcomponents which is eliminated during the debinding step, creating a dimensionally-controlled, micro-scale mobile interface. The fabrication technique combines the advantages of micro-powder overmoulding, catalytic debinding and sintering. The demonstrated example was a finger bone prosthesis joint consisting of two sub-components with an interface between components of 200 μm in size. The geometries of the sub-components were designed such that they are inseparable throughout the process whilst allowing them to move relative to each other after the debinding stage. The components produced showed the feasibility of the process route to produce readily-assembled meso-, and potentially micro-, scale articulated system

Transsulfuration pathway thiols and methylated arginines: the hunter community study

Background: Serum homocysteine, when studied singly, has been reported to be positively associated both with the endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine [ADMA, via inhibition of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) activity] and with symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). We investigated combined associations between transsulfuration pathway thiols, including homocysteine, and serum ADMA and SDMA concentrations at population level. Methods: Data on clinical and demographic characteristics, medication exposure, C-reactive protein, serum ADMA and SDMA (LC-MS/MS), and thiols (homocysteine, cysteine, taurine, glutamylcysteine, total glutathione, and cysteinylglycine; capillary electrophoresis) were collected from a sample of the Hunter Community Study on human ageing [n = 498, median age (IQR) = 64 (60–70) years]. Results: Regression analysis showed that: a) age (P = 0.001), gender (P = 0.03), lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, P = 0.08), body mass index (P = 0.008), treatment with beta-blockers (P = 0.03), homocysteine (P = 0.02), and glutamylcysteine (P = 0.003) were independently associated with higher ADMA concentrations; and b) age (P = 0.001), absence of diabetes (P = 0.001), lower body mass index (P = 0.01), lower eGFR (P<0.001), cysteine (P = 0.007), and glutamylcysteine (P<0.001) were independently associated with higher SDMA concentrations. No significant associations were observed between methylated arginines and either glutathione or taurine concentrations. Conclusions: After adjusting for clinical, demographic, biochemical, and pharmacological confounders the combined assessment of transsulfuration pathway thiols shows that glutamylcysteine has the strongest and positive independent associations with ADMA and SDMA. Whether this reflects a direct effect of glutamylcysteine on DDAH activity (for ADMA) and/or cationic amino acid transport requires further investigations.</br

Flatness optimization of micro-injection moulded parts: The case of a PMMA microfluidic component

Get PDF
Micro-injection moulding (µ-IM) has attracted a lot of interest because of its potential for the production of low-cost, miniaturized parts in high-volume. Applications of this technology are, amongst others, microfluidic components for lab-on-a-chip devices and micro-optical components. In both cases, the control of the part flatness is a key aspect to maintaining the component's functionality. The objective of this work is to determine the factors affecting the flatness of a polymer part manufactured by µ-IM and to control the manufacturing process with the aim of minimizing the in-process part deformation. As a case study, a PMMA microfluidic substrate with overall dimensions of 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness was investigated by designing a µ-IM experiment having flatness as the experimental response. The part flatness was measured using a micro-coordinate measuring machine. Finite elements analysis was also carried out to study the optimal ejection pin configuration. The results of this work show that the control of the µ-IM process conditions can improve the flatness of the polymer part up to about 15 µm. Part flatness as low as 4 µm can be achieved by modifying the design of the ejection system according to suggested guideline

Clinical and biochemical correlates of serum L-ergothioneine concentrations in community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults

Background: Despite the increasing interest towards the biological role of L-ergothioneine, little is known about the serum concentrations of this unusual aminothiol in older adults. We addressed this issue in a representative sample of communitydwelling middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, serum concentrations of L-ergothioneine, taurine, homocysteine, cysteine, glutathione, cysteinylglycine, and glutamylcysteine were evaluated in 439 subjects (age 55–85 years) randomly selected from the Hunter Community Study. Results: Median L-ergothioneine concentration in the entire cohort was 1.01 IQR 0.78–1.33 mmol/L. Concentrations were not affected by gender (P = 0.41) or by presence of chronic medical conditions (P = 0.15). By considering only healthy subjects, we defined a reference interval for L-ergothioneine serum concentrations from 0.36 (90% CI 0.31–0.44) to 3.08 (90% CI 2.45–3.76) mmol/L. Using stepwise multiple linear regression analysis L-ergothioneine was negatively correlated with age (rpartial =20.15; P = 0.0018) and with glutamylcysteine concentrations (rpartial =20.13; P = 0.0063). Conclusions: A thorough analysis of serum L-ergothioneine concentrations was performed in a large group of communitydwelling middle-aged and older adults. Reference intervals were established. Age and glutamylcysteine were independently negatively associated with L-ergothioneine serum concentration.</br

Optimization of Passive and Hybrid Mode-locked Figure Eight Laser

In pulsed fiber laser using Q-switching or mode locking techniques, the choice of the different components and the management of linear and non linear parameters of the cavity, play a paramount role in the generation of stable ultra short pulses with high peak powers and low widths. In this paper, we focus on the operating process of mode locked fiber lasers especially passively and hybrid type Eight Fiber Lasers (8FLs). By modeling the light propagation within the two cavities, we describe the whole operating process of ultra short pulses generation. The interaction between the mode locking mechanism and nonlinear effects in fiber laser is also illustrated. We demonstrate enhancing non linear effects do not lead necessarily to better results. It depends on the type of mode locking techniques used. The highest and narrowest output pulses are obtained for specific values of the non linear parameters and the mean dispersion of the cavity

Extreme case of density scaling:The Weeks-Chandler-Andersen system at low temperatures

Get PDF
This paper studies numerically the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) system, which is shown to obey hidden scale invariance with a density-scaling exponent that varies from below 5 to above 500. This unprecedented variation makes it advantageous to use the fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm for tracing out isomorphs. Good isomorph invariance of the structure and dynamics is observed over more than three orders of magnitude temperature variation. For all state points studied, the virial potential-energy correlation coefficient and the density-scaling exponent are controlled mainly by the temperature. A mean-field theory is presented based on the assumption of statistically independent pair interactions, which rationalizes this finding

Design and fabrication of a three-dimensional microfluidic device for blood separation using micro-injection moulding

Micro-manufacturing is a fast developing area due to the increasing demand for components and systems of high precision and small dimensions. A number of challenges are yet to be overcome before the full potential of such techniques is realised. Examples of such challenges include limitations in component geometry, material selection and suitability for mass production. Some micro-manufacturing techniques are still at early development stages, while other techniques are at higher stage of manufacturing readiness level but require adaptation in part design or manufacturing procedure to overcome such limitations. This article presents a case study, where the design of a micro-scale, biomedical device is adapted for functionality and manufacturability by a high-volume micro-fabrication technique. Investigations are described towards a disposable three-dimensional, polymer-based device for the separation of blood cells and plasma. The importance of attempting a three-dimensional device design and fabrication route was to take advantage of the highthroughput per unit volume that such systems can, in principle, allow. The importance of a micro-moulding fabrication route was to allow such blood-containing devices to be cheaply manufactured for disposability. Initial device tests showed separation efficiency up to approximately 80% with diluted blood samples. The produced prototype indicated that the process flow was suitable for high-volume fabrication of three-dimensional microfluidics

Hysteresis phenomenon and multistability in figure-of-eight microstructured fiber laser

We report a theoretical investigation of multi-pulse emission of a microstructured figure-ofeight fiber laser operating in passive mode-locking. The proposed laser is mode locked by the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). We study, in this paper, the hysteresis dependence and the number of pulses in steady state as a function of both the small signal gain and the nonlinear coefficient of microstructured fiber. The numerical simulation confirms that the pulse splitting is a consequence of the energy quantization in anomalous dispersion. Moreover, our results suggest that the hysteresis phenomenon is an intrinsic feature of the mode-locked fiber lasers independently of the exact mode-locking mechanism. Finally, we identify that the nonlinear coefficient of microstructured fiber plays a key role in the formation of multi-soliton
