    Effect of Mitomycin C in the prevention of tendon adhesion after surgery and the effect of biomechanical stretching on tendon histology

    Objective: In this study, optimal dose to reduce tendon adhesion, by using the dose-dependent fibroblast proliferation inhibition effect of Mit-C, and the level, which the tendon histologies are affected, using biomechanical stretching, is investigated. Methods: 56 chicken flexor tendons were used in this study. A total of 9 groups were formed. Mit-C were applied between the tendon and the sheath; 0.9% NaCl for surgical control groups (groupII, groupIII), 0.1mg/ml Mit-C (groupIV, groupVII), 0.2mg/ml Mit-C (groupV, groupVIII) 0.5 mg/ml Mit-C (groupVI, groupIX). Macroscopic, microscopic, synovial sheath thickness and active fibroblast count were compared between the groups that underwent biomechanical stretching (groups III,V,VII,IX) and groups without biomechanical stretching (groups I,II,IV,VI,VIII). Results: After the macroscopic and microscopic examination, it was observed that the groups with the most adhesion were surgical control groups. The best results from the experimental groups were seen in group VIII, but the results of the groups were similar. When active fibroblast count was examined, it was seen that group VIII had the least active fibroblast count. Conclusion: According to the results of the evaluation, Mit-C, by inhibiting fibroblast proliferation and decreasing synovial sheath thickness, decreased adhesion formation. At the same time, it was concluded that the optimal dose for adhesion prevention was 0.2mg/ml, biomechanical stretching affected tendon histology and the drug was suitable for clinical studies

    The aim of this study is to determine whether or not the different types of ADHD change according to age, gender, class and department. The study was carried out during the 2008-2009 academic year at Ondokuz Mayıs University and focused on students at the university. The data necessary to investigate the ADHD level of students has been gathered by the ADHD scale (Turgay,2004) and Personal İnformation Form. It can be seen that there were important differences between students of age, gender, class and section variables when considering attention disorder. In the same way it was also observed that there were important differences between the characteristics and problems associated with ADHD among the groups. This study gives us an important clue regarding the prevalance of ADHD and of its symptoms such as attention disorder, hyperactivity and impulsivity among university students.Bu araştırmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin Erişkin Dikkat Eksikliği Hiperaktivite Ölçeğinin alt boyutları düzeylerinin yaş, cinsiyet, sınıf ve bölümlerine göre değişip değişmediğini belirlemektir. Bu araştırmanın evrenini 2008-2009 öğretim yılında Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi’nde, öğrenim gören öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem ise, bu öğrenciler arasından rastgele seçilen 1954 öğrencidir. Araştırmada Turgay tarafından geliştirilen Erişkin Dikkat Eksikliği Hiperaktivite ölçeği ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Yaş, Cinsiyet, Sınıf ve Bölüm değişkenlerine göre Dikkat eksikliği alt boyutu toplam puanları açısından gruplar arasındaki farkın anlamlı olduğu gözlenmektedir. Aynı şekilde DEHB ile ilgili özellikler ve sorunlar alt boyutu toplam puanları açısından gruplar arasındaki farkın anlamlı olduğu gözlenmektedir. Bu sonuçlar bize üniversite öğrencilerinin Dikkat eksikliği, Aşırı hareketlilik/dürtüsellik ve DEHB ile ilgili özellikler ve sorunlar boyutları ile ilgili bazı ipuçları vermektedir

    Is emergent cervical radiological evaluation mandatory in isolated cranial gunshot injury?

    Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accompanied cervical injuries of the patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) because of penetrating, perforating or tangential cranial gunshot injuries (CGI). Material and Methods: The retrospective study included 137 patients that presented to the EDs at Mustafa Kemal and Ataturk University due to penetrating, perforating or tangential CGI between 2014 and 2018. Patients younger than 12 years old and had insufficient radiological records were excluded from the study and thus 115 patients were included in the study. Results: 115 patients included 105 (91%) men and 10 (9%) women with a mean age of 27 (range, 12-65) years. Of the 115 injuries, 84 (73%) were high-velocity and 31 (27%) were low-velocity gunshot injuries. The injuries included 92 (80%) penetrating or perforating and 23 (20%) tangential injuries. No cervical dislocation injury was accompanied by CGI in any patient. Unilateral lamina fracture of the cervical vertebra was observed in one patient. Conclusion: Our results support the opinion that isolated penetrating, perforating or tangential CGI did not cause to cervical spinal injuries, the intubation or tracheostomy procedures should not be postponed after radiological evaluation of cervical spinal stability

    Parkinsonlu hastalarda derin beyin stimülasyonunun yaşam kalitesine etkisi

    Objective: To investigate the effect of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on quality of life (QOL) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Materials and Methods: The study included 19 patients with idiopathic PD who underwent DBS surgery at Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Medicine, Neurosurgery Department. Patient characteristics, duration of disease, and the dominant hand of each patient were noted from the patients’ clinical records. The QOL of the patients was assessed using the RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0 (RAND-36) and the symptoms of PD were evaluated using the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS), which was administered preoperatively when the medication was on (within one week prior to surgery) and postoperatively when the medication and stimulation were on (2 months after the surgery; range, 55-65 days). Results: The study included 19 patients with PD, comprising 12 (63.2%) men and 7 (36.8%) women with a mean age of 52.07±9.89 (range, 38-72) years. The mean duration of disease was 6.60±5.92 years. A sex-based analysis of the RAND-36 scores indicated that there was a significant difference between the pre- and postoperative scores of the female patients for bodily pain (p=0.028) and between the pre- and postoperative scores of the male patients for emotional well-being (p=0.032). However, no significant difference was found between the pre- and postoperative scores of other subcategories in both sexes (p>0.05). On the other hand, postoperative UPDRS scores decreased compared with preoperative scores in all patients. Conclusion: This study is the first region-wide prospective study to investigate the effects of subthalamic nucleus (STN)-DBS in patients with PD for our region.     Determination Of Organic Pollutant Levels In Shipyard And Marina Waters By Passive Sampling

    Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2014Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2014Bu çalışma kapsamında; tersane ve marinalarda organik kirleticiler olarak polisiklik aromatik hidrokarbonlar (PAH), poliklorlu bifeniller (PKB) ve organoklorlu pestisitler (OKP) incelenmiştir. Bu bileşiklerin örneklenmesinde bütil kauçuk (BK) sorbent ve yarı geçirgen membran örnekleyiciler (SPMD) kullanılmıştır. Tersane ve marinalarda organik kirletici seviyelerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla Marmara ve Akdeniz bölgelerinde bulunan iki farklı marinaya ve Tuzla tersaneler bölgesine, 30 gün süreyle pasif örnekleyiciler yerleştirilmiştir. SPMD’ler ile örneklenen toplam PAH konsantrasyonları 37 - 3338 ng/g SPMD, toplam PKB konsantrasyonları 97 - 4247 pg/g SPMD ve toplam OKP konsantrasyonları 2915 - 13673 pg/g SPMD aralığında saptanmıştır. Bütil kauçuk sorbentler ile örneklenen toplam PAH konsantrasyonları 19,7 - 2083 ng/g BK sorbent, toplam PKB konsantrasyonları 638 - 8306 pg/g BK sorbent ve toplam OKP konsantrasyonları 2496 - 17479 pg/g BK sorbent aralığında ölçülmüştür. SPMD’ler ile yapılan örneklemelerden elde edilen analiz sonuçları, 80/20 ve NLS (Nonlinear Least Squares) olmak üzere iki farklı yöntem kullanılarak değerlendirilmiş ve kirleticilerin deniz suyundaki konsantrasyonları tahmin edilmiştir. Hesaplanan SPMD su kullanılarak marinalardaki organik kirletici seviyeleri üzerine sayısal bir model oluşturulmuştur. Oluşturulan sayısal model sonuçlarının hesaplanan sudaki kirletici konsantrasyonlarıyla uyumlu olduğu görülmüştür. Yapılan örnekleme çalışmaları ve analizler sonucunda, gemi yapım ve onarım faaliyetlerinin sudaki organik kirletici konsantrasyonlarını yüksek oranda arttırdığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler, marinalar için bu konuda kesin bir yargıya varılamayacağını göstermiştir. Bu çalışmada elde edilen verilerin, gelecekte bu bölgelerde yapılacak bilimsel araştırmalarda ve risk değerlendirme çalışmalarında bir zemin oluşturacağı düşünülmektedir.In this study, concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined in shipyard and marina waters. semi permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) and butyl rubber (BR) sorbents were used as passive samplers. Passive samplers were deployed to two different marinas in Marmara and Mediterranean region of Turkey; and Tuzla Shipbuilding Zone where several shipyards are located. According to the data obtained by analyses, the concentrations of organic pollutants sampled by SPMDs ranged from 37 - 3338 ng/g SPMD for total PAHs, 97 - 4247 pg/g SPMD for total PCBs and 2915 - 13673 pg/g SPMD for total OCPs for all sampling stations. For BR sorbents, these concentrations varied between 19,7 – 2083 ng/g BR sorbent for total PAHs, 638 - 8306 pg/g BR sorbent for total PCBs and 2496 - 17479 pg/g BR sorbent for total OCPs. Data obtained from sampling by SPMDs were evaluated by 80/20 and NLS methods in order to estimate the water concentration of the organic pollutants. In addition, a numerical model was established for marinas to estimate the contribution of boats in to organic pollutant levels. It was observed that the model output were highly coherent with the water concentrations calculated by NLS method. As a conclusion, it was found that construction and repair activities in shipyards increases the levels of organic pollutants in water. Obtained sampling data show that a certain judgement about the contribution of marinas to organic pollutant levels can not be clearly stated.Yüksek LisansM.Sc
