Assessing fishers perception on disaster management across coastal Kerala
In the wake of cyclone Ockhi that struck Kanyakumari
district in Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala on November 29th,
2017, disaster management has again caught the attention of
fishermen and policymakers. Disaster Management in fisheries
essentially deals with management of resources and
information as far as a disastrous event is concerned and also
how effectively and seamlessly one coordinates these resources.
Data related to the perception of fishermen regarding current
disaster management in place and the information services
provided were collected from the stakeholders representing
fishermen across the state of Kerala and was analysed using
statistical tools such as percentage analysis and Garrett ranking
for deriving conclusions out of the survey data

A physical map for the Amborella trichopoda genome sheds light on the evolution of angiosperm genome structure
Background: Recent phylogenetic analyses have identified Amborella trichopoda, an understory tree species endemic to the forests of New Caledonia, as sister to a clade including all other known flowering plant species. The Amborella genome is a unique reference for understanding the evolution of angiosperm genomes because it can serve as an outgroup to root comparative analyses. A physical map, BAC end sequences and sample shotgun sequences provide a first view of the 870 Mbp Amborella genome. Results: Analysis of Amborella BAC ends sequenced from each contig suggests that the density of long terminal repeat retrotransposons is negatively correlated with that of protein coding genes. Syntenic, presumably ancestral, gene blocks were identified in comparisons of the Amborella BAC contigs and the sequenced Arabidopsis thaliana, Populus trichocarpa, Vitis vinifera and Oryza sativa genomes. Parsimony mapping of the loss of synteny corroborates previous analyses suggesting that the rate of structural change has been more rapid on lineages leading to Arabidopsis and Oryza compared with lineages leading to Populus and Vitis. The gamma paleohexiploidy event identified in the Arabidopsis, Populus and Vitis genomes is shown to have occurred after the divergence of all other known angiosperms from the lineage leading to Amborella. Conclusions: When placed in the context of a physical map, BAC end sequences representing just 5.4% of the Amborella genome have facilitated reconstruction of gene blocks that existed in the last common ancestor of all flowering plants. The Amborella genome is an invaluable reference for inferences concerning the ancestral angiosperm and subsequent genome evolution
A critical role of RBM8a in proliferation and differentiation of embryonic neural progenitors
BACKGROUND: Nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an RNA surveillance mechanism that controls RNA stability and ensures the speedy degradation of erroneous and unnecessary transcripts. This mechanism depends on several core factors in the exon junction complex (EJC), eIF4A3, RBM8a, Magoh, and BTZ, as well as peripheral factors to distinguish premature stop codons (PTCs) from normal stop codons in transcripts. Recently, emerging evidence has indicated that NMD factors are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). However, the mechanism in which these factors control embryonic brain development is not clear. RESULT: We found that RBM8a is critical for proliferation and differentiation in cortical neural progenitor cells (NPCs). RBM8a is highly expressed in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the early embryonic cortex, suggesting that RBM8a may play a role in regulating NPCs. RBM8a overexpression stimulates embryonic NPC proliferation and suppresses neuronal differentiation. Conversely, knockdown of RBM8a in the neocortex reduces NPC proliferation and promotes premature neuronal differentiation. Moreover, overexpression of RBM8a suppresses cell cycle exit and keeps cortical NPCs in a proliferative state. To uncover the underlying mechanisms of this phenotype, genome-wide RNAseq was used to identify potential downstream genes of RBM8a in the brain, which have been implicated in autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. Interestingly, autism and schizophrenia risk genes are highly represented in downstream transcripts of RBM8a. In addition, RBM8a regulates multiple alternative splicing genes and NMD targets that are implicated in ASD. Taken together, this data suggests a novel role of RBM8a in the regulation of neurodevelopment. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies provide some insight into causes of mental illnesses and will facilitate the development of new therapeutic strategies for neurodevelopmental illnesses. External auditory canal lesion: colorectal metastatic adenocarcinoma.
The patient presented to the ear, nose and throat clinic with failed conservative treatment of persistent right otitis externa. On examination, the roof of the right ear canal was polypoid and the tympanic membrane could not be visualised. There was a fragile mass noted in the external auditory canal (EAC) which on microsuction started to bleed. CT internal auditory meatus and MRI internal auditory meatus identified soft tissue mass in the EAC. The patient underwent urgent examination under anaesthetic of the ear and biopsies were taken. He had a background of ascending colon cancer; Duke's C1, pT4, N1 M0, R0 resection and had undergone laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with adjuvant chemotherapy, in the previous year. The biopsy results proved that the mass in the EAC was due to metastatic deposit of colorectal primary tumour. The patient also had a full body CT which revealed other new metastases. The patient is being treated with palliative chemotherapy
