    An electronic architecture for mediating digital information in a hallway fac̦ade

    Ubiquitous computing requires integration of physical space with digital information. This presents the challenges of integrating electronics, physical space, software and the interaction tools which can effectively communicate with the audience. Many research groups have embraced different techniques depending on location, context, space, and availability of necessary skills to make the world around us as an interface to the digital world. Encouraged by early successes and fostered by project undertaken by tangible visualization group. We introduce an architecture of Blades and Tiles for the development and realization of interactive wall surfaces. It provides an inexpensive, open-ended platform for constructing large-scale tangible and embedded interfaces. In this paper, we propose tiles built using inexpensive pegboards and a gateway for each of these tiles to provide access to digital information. The paper describes the architecture using a corridor fa\c{c}ade application. The corridor fa\c{c}ade uses full-spectrum LEDs, physical labels and stencils, and capacitive touch sensors to provide mediated representation, monitoring and querying of physical and digital content. Example contents include the physical and online status of people and the activity and dynamics of online research content repositories. Several complementary devices such as Microsoft PixelSense and smartdevices can support additional user interaction with the system. This enables interested people in synergistic physical environments to observe, explore, understand, and engage in ongoing activities and relationships.     Studies on South Indian radioactive minerals. Part I. Samarskite from Nellore

    Samarskite, a radioactive niobotantalate occurring in the Nellore pegmatites, has been studied in detail. The investigations comprise the determination of physical and optical characters, chemical composition, autoradiographic studies, distribution pattern, calculation and interpretation of age. The available data on Nellore Samarskite has been critically examined and it has been shown that the controversy raised by Holmes concerning the age of the Eastern Ghats can be solved, if the samarskite specimen analysed by Sarkar and Sen Sarma is understood to belong to the Gaya group of minerals, as has been later suggested. A tentative Archaean succession table has also been suggested

    Design and Performance of Configurable Endsystem Scheduling Mechanisms

    This paper describes a scheduling abstraction, called group scheduling, that emphasizes fine grain configurability of scheduling system semantics. The group scheduling approach described and evaluated in this paper is an extremely flexible framework within which a wide range of scheduling semantics can be expressed. The paper describes both the OS and middleware based implementations of the framework, and shows through evaluation that they produce the same behavior from a non-trivial set of application computations. Further, the evaluation shows that the framework can easily support application-aware scheduling algorithms to improve performance

    Magnitude of bud blight disease of tomato caused by Peanut bud necrosis virus (PBNV) in Northern Eastern Karnataka

    The present study on magnitude and spatial distribution of bud blight disease of tomato caused by Peanut bud necrosis virus in major tomato growing area of North Eastern Karnataka through GPS approach during 2014-15, revealed that disease was found to occur at all the stages of the crop with characteristic symptoms such as necrotic rings with green or yellow hallow spots on leaves, later tip necrosis and die back. Further, presence of longitudinal brown necrotic streaks on petioles, stem and characteristic brown ring and chlorotic ring spots on green and red ripened tomatoes respectively. GPS based survey indicated that the % disease incidence varied from location to location (spatial variation), with the mean incidence ranging from 14.52 to 62.13 per cent. Among the six districts, highest incidence of 62.13 per cent was recorded in Kalaburgi district followed by Raichur, Bidar, Yadgir and Koppal with 60.35, 57.96, 45.68 and 37.13 per cent incidence, respectively and the least disease incidence of 14.52 per cent was recorded in Ballari district. The GPS maps plotted based on PDI scale (0-4) represents high risk areas of the disease in North Eastern Karnataka and higher magnitude of disease was recorded in many of the location surveyed were the tomato fields surrounded by alternate hosts of PBNV. The study signifies PBNV diagnostic symptoms and its prevalence in North Eastern Karnatak

    Group Scheduling in SELinux to Mitigate CPU-Focused Denial of Service Attacks

    Popular security techniques such as public-private key encryption, firewalls, and role-based access control offer significant protec-tion of system data, but offer only limited protection of the computations using that data from significant interference due to accident or adversarial attack. However, in an increasing number of modern systems, ensuring the reliable execution of system activities is every bit as important as ensuring data security. This paper makes three contributions to the state of the art in protection of the execution of system activities from accidental or adversarial interference. First, we consider the motivating problem of CPU-focused denial of service attacks, and explain how limitations of current approaches to these kinds of attacks make it difficult to offer sufficiently rigorous and fine-grained assurances of protection for the execution of system computations. Second, we describe a novel solution approach in which we have integrated fine-grained scheduling decision functions with system call hooks from the Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) framework within the Linux 2.6 kernel. Third, we present empirical evaluations of the efficacy of our approach in controlling the CPU utilization of competing greedy computations that are either completely CPU bound, or that interleave I/O and CPU access, across a range of relative allocations of the CPU

    I Hear Bangalore3D: Capture and Reproduction of Urban Sounds of Bangalore Using an Ambisonic Microphone

    Presented at the 20th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD2014), June 22-25, 2014, New York, NY.This paper describes the project, I Hear Bangalore3D, which is an attempt to capture and render 3D recordings of various iconic locations of the city of Bangalore. First order ambisonic recordings were done and processed so that they can be played back using a speaker array configuration through real time matrixing or using headphones through binaural renderings of the recordings. This project has both aesthetic and informational use to it. Coming off a sister project, I Hear NY3D, which took a similar route in Manhattan, this project also aims at comparing the noise levels and other information of different cities in different parts of the world

    As a part of an attempt to develop new methods of measurement of diffusion constant of metals and non-metals into minerals using radioactivity techniques, expressions are derived to relate the processes of diffusion and the emission of alpha-particles under three sets of possible experimental conditions. The first case pertaisn to a plate whose thickness is equal to the characteristic range of the alpha-rays of the radio-nuclide used. Under the second case is considered a plate thicker than the characteristic range fo the alpha-rays in the plate. The third deals with cases wherein the radioactive matter used emits alpha-rays with different ranges less than the thickness of the plate

    Global positioning system based spatial and temporal distribution of new leaf curl begomovirus disease on sunflower in Northern Karnataka

    Leaf curl disease on sunflower caused by begomovirus genus of the family geminiviridae. Present investigations on field survey for disease incidence, field diagnostic symptoms and its spatial and temporal distribution in major sunflower growing parts of North Eastern Karnataka through GPS system during 2013-14, revealed that the disease was found to occur at all the stages of sunflower under field condition and exhibited symptoms such as vein thickening (enations) on abaxial surface of the leaves, upward curling and reduction in leaf size and severe discoluration of capitulum (Head) followed by bushy appearance. GPS based survey indicated that the % disease incidence varied from location to location (spatial variation) and also from season to season (temporal variation). The low incidence was noticed during Kharif condition which is ranged between 6.34-11.16, with the average incidence of 11.2%, 7.4% and 6.3% in Koppal, Raichur and Ballari districts repectively. Whereas during Rabi/summer season, high magnitude of disease noticed in many of the locations surveyed and is recorded upto 92.9 %. The GPS maps plotted based on PDI scale (0-3) represents high risk areas of the disease in Raichur and adjacent areas of Nort Eastern Karnataka and the result shows that the disease occurrence was more in rabi as compared to Kharif situations irrespective of locations. GPS survey map is an indicator to locate the nature of disease spread so as to conclude the hotspot areas
