    Abstract— This study attempts to critically analyze the practices of foreign language teaching particularly English which commonly pay less attention to the accompanying intercultural communication and also to propose an alternative solution to support and promote the character education in this country. It is commonly believed that the practices of the English language teaching are always accompanied by the insertion of foreign cultural values which are not always in harmony with our own values. In line with the national education goals, it seems that the most possible way to overcome this problem is by integrating the Indonesian local cultural values in the practices of the English language teaching to promote character education, which is commonly believed to play important roles in encouraging, improving, and maintaining the spirit of nationalism of our future generation Keywords— local culture, teaching and learning, English, character education Abstrak— Kajian ini hendak mencoba menelaah secara kritis praktek-praktek pembelajaran bahasa asing khususnya Bahasa Inggris yang umumnya kurang memperhatikan aspek akulturasi budaya yang menyertainya dan juga mencari alternatif solusi pemecahannya demi mendukung tercapainya pendidikan yang berbasis character building di negara ini. Pada kenyataannya, praktek pengajaran bahasa Inggris senantiasa menyediakan ruang adanya insersi nilai-nilai budaya asing masyarakat penuturnya yang belum tentu sejalan dengan nilai-nilai budaya masyarakata kita.     SENTENCE PATTERNS OF NARRATIVE TEXT ENGLISH TEXTBOOK IN INDONESIA

    A language may change its type over time as has happened with English which in the old English period was a synthetic language with many inflections and now is a rather analytic language with few grammatical endings that needs to be known and investigated. This study was aimed to find the types of sentence and phrase structures found in the narrative texts in English textbook. Based on the result of analysis, the data showed that every type of sentences occurred. The data also showed that not every phrase was occurred. Finally, it could be concluded that narrative texts consisted of every types of sentences and phrases to convey the meaning and story to the readers

    Speaking ability is able to describe how far the language learner mastered about the language because it covers all of English elements. However, many students consider that speaking is not easy. The use of a variety of questioning strategies is recommended, focusing primarily on the higher end of Bloom’s taxonomy to engage students in advanced-level thinking. Teachers can incorporate questions effectively by knowing the various purposes, types, and intended outcomes and by establishing a classroom climate that promotes active engagement, exploration, and inquiry to further student achievement. Therefore, this study investigated whether or not teacher’s questioning strategies would influence the speaking achievement of the eleventh grade students at SMKN 1 Palembang . The problem of this study was “Do the teacher’s questioning strategies influence the eleventh grade students’ speaking achievement at SMKN 1 Palembang? In this study, the quasi-experimental method was used, data were taken from the result of the test, both the pre-test and post-test. The writer applied three techniques to analyze the data, first, the scoring rubric of speaking, second, the conversation of percentage range and, third, the matched t-test. The analysis of independent sample t-test showed that the mean difference of the post-test each group was 11.200 and the significant level was 0.000 since 0.000 was lower than alpha value 0.05, it meant that there was significant difference in speaking between two groups. This confirmed that the students in experimental group made better achievement it was compared to those of the students in control group. It could be meant that the use of teacher’s questioning strategies influenced the eleventh grade students’ speaking achievement at SMKN 1 Palembang. &nbsp

    PENGARUH METODE PEMBELAJARAN 3N (NITENI, NIROKKE, NAMBAHI) TERHADAP KETERAMPILAN MENULIS PUISI PADA PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INDONESIA SISWA SD

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya pengaruh keterampilan menulis puisi pada peserta didik kelas IV SD setelah diterapkannya metode keterampilan 3N (Niteni, Nirokke, Nambahi). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian yaitu eksperimen. Sampel dalam penelitian ini yaitu 1 kelas digunakan sebagai kelas kontrol dan 1 kelas digunakan sebagai kelas eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah peserta didik kelas IV.A dan IV.B SD Negeri 1 Bubusan dengan jumlah 32 peserta didik. Teknik pengumpulan data data menggunakan tes. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah uji prasyarat yaitu uji normalitas, dan uji homogenitas, dan uji hipotesis yaitu Uji Mann Whitney. Berdasarkan hasil pembahasan yang diperoleh nilai rata-rata dari posttest kelas kontrol memperoleh nilai sebesar 17 dan posttest rata-rata dari kelas eksperimen memperoleh nilai sebesar 72. Hasil penelitian menunjukan nilai Sig.(2-tailed) sebesar 0,000<0,005, maka Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima. Dengan demikian terdapat pengaruh keterampilan menulis puisi pada peserta didik kelas IV SD setelah diterapkannya metode 3N (Niteni, Nirokke, Nambahi) di SD Negeri 1 Bubusan. &nbsp

    Pengembangan Media Pembelajaran Box Cuaca Pada Tema V Kelas III SD Negeri 90 Palembang

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kevalidan, kepraktisan dan keefektifan dari media pembelajaran box cuaca yang dikembangkan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu Research and Development (RnD) dengan model ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas III SD Negeri 90 Palembang. Validasi yang dikembangkan dilakukan oleh ahli media dan materi. Data pada penelitian ini diperoleh dari angket validasi, angket respon peserta didik, serta tes yang berupa latihan soal. Hasil validasi dari ketiga validator menilai kualitas media pembelajaran box cuaca secara keseluruhan memperoleh skor sebesar 85,6% dengan kategori sangat valid, pada uji coba one to one memperoleh rata-rata 85,3% dan uji coba small group memperoleh rata-rata 90,2% dengan kategori sangat praktis, hasil tes latihan soal pada uji coba kelompok besar keseluruhan siswa memperoleh rata-rata 72,73 dengan kategori baik. Berdasarkan hasil data yang diperoleh dapat disimpulkan bahwa media pembelajaran box cuaca telah memenuhi kriteria valid, praktis, efektif

    NEARPOD WEBSITE STRATEGY IN INCREASING STUDENTS’ LISTENING ABILITY

    The main problem of this study was “Is there any significant effect on the students’ listening achievement after being taught by using Nearpod and those who are not?”. The method used in this study was quantitative or quasi-experimental method. The data collected by using written test and online based test on Nearpod Website. The data were analyzed through matched t-test formula and percentage of analysis to find out the effectiveness of teaching listening through Nearpod and Conventional Method. It was found out that the value of t-obtained was 8.12 where the value of the t-table at 0.05 significant level for two tailed with 18 (df) was 2.100. It means that there was significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test especially the experimental class. It can be stated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It is indicated that Nearpod Website Strategy could increase students’ listening ability

    THE INFLUENCE OF CASE BUILDING TECHNIQUE AND LEARNING INTERESTS ON THE STUDENTS’ LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT

    This study aims to determine: (1) whether Case building technique and student interest in learning can make a significant difference in improving learning achievement, and (2) the contribution of Case building to increasing student achievement and interest in learning to determine the level of effectiveness of this learning strategy. The data were collected by using a speech test which is evaluated by two assessors using an analytic rubric consisting of five elements, namely accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Meanwhile, Student interest in learning was evaluated using a questionnaire. Both data were analyzed using the t-test to see the mean difference (1) between the pre-and post-test students' speaking achievement and their self-confidence, and (2) the post-test of speaking achievement and their self-confidence between the first and second groups. Regression analysis was provided to see the contribution of case building to the variables in question. This study found that case buiding technique could improve the students’ learning interest and learning achievement

    STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY THROUGH SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION

    The purpose of this study was that students could communicate fluently using English in everyday life, using small group discussion strategies to make students more active in interacting with others. To collect the data for this research, the writer conduct in interview and questionnaire with the eight grade students at Junior High School Bina Jaya of Palembang. Each student will be given a paper like a questionnaire. The author will discuss the results of the research that has been done, namely using the small group discussion technique in learning speaking skills of students in the eighth grade. From the results of the questionnaire data processing, it can be seen from the statement item no.32 "Small group discussion techniques can improve students ''speaking skills". Most of the students chose 8 (50%) of the 16 respondents answered fully agree, while the rest chose 8 (50%) of the 16 respondents answered agree. Then the dominant result is balanced. The overall results of the study showed that small group discussions can effectively improve students' speaking skills, they actively conduct group discussions with their friends. Allow them to have an opinion and help each other, without mocking or laughing at each other

    THE STUDENTS’ PERSONALITY BASED ON THEIR READING ATTITUDE

    This research aimed to know and analyze students’ personalities based on their reading attitudes and identify the reading strategies frequently used by students. The research was conducted at SMP PGRI 1 Palembang using a qualitative method. The data were collected through observation, surveying using two questionnaires (a personality questionnaire and a reading strategy questionnaire), interviews, and documentation. The research sample consisted of 30 students from class VIII.1 at SMP PGRI 1 Palembang in the academic year 2022–2023, even semester. Based on this research, it was found that 24% of students in class VIII.1 have a conscientiousness personality characterized by being organized, responsible, and disciplined. Furthermore, 43% of students use a global reading strategy that focuses on overall text comprehension. These findings indicate a relationship between reading attitude and students’ personalities, with conscientiousness and global reading strategy dominating. The implication is that this research provides important insights for the development of effective learning strategies to enhance students’ reading skills at SMP PGRI 1 Palembang
