The Role of Sport in Supporting Newcomer Youth Identity Negotiation

    Get PDF
Identity is a central component of the human experience. Religion, occupation, life style and leisure have been identified as examples of anchors which individuals have built their identities around (Riley, 2008). This concept of anchoring could prove especially difficult for youth whose families are forced to migrate for various reasons because “migration leads to significant life changes” (Chuang et. al, 2011, p. 149). For youth who are still exploring and learning about the world and themselves, this drastic change may challenge their concept of identity. Further, youth who migrate to foreign countries also face the double-bind of being both a newcomer and youth (Selimos & Daniel, 2017). Newcomer youth especially struggle with identity because their identities at home and away from home often juxtapose with each other (Compton-Lilly et al., 2017; Kiramba & Oloo, 2020; 2023; Phelps & Nadim, 2010). These juxtaposing identities force newcomer youth into a position wherein they constantly negotiate their identity. Swann (1987) explained that identity negotiation begins with an individual’s concepts of self changing from previous perceptions to updated ones, or as he put it, “a major reorganization in the way [individuals] view themselves” (p. 1044). With the many changes that occur in the lives of migrant youth, they undoubtedly reorganize the way in which they view themselves as result of the many changes to their environment. Currently, academia examines the role of sport in benefiting the lives of newcomers, and specifically newcomer youth. Much of this literature focuses on the sense of inclusivity and belonging that sport brings to the lives of these newcomers (Doherty & Taylor, 2007; Kramers et al., 2021; Omidvar & Richmond, 2003; Selimos & Daniel, 2017). There is a dearth of literature that explores the benefit of sport to the identity negotiation of newcomer youth. This paper seeks to explore the way in which sport, specifically soccer, supports newcomer youth through the process of identity negotiation by being an anchor in their lives. This paper came out of a corollary finding of my master’s thesis which looked to build understanding about newcomer youth leadership development through sport. While newcomer youth participants noted many changes to their lives as a result of migration, all of them mentioned soccer as a constant. Soccer served as the anchor by which they could authentically be themselves within their countries of origin, while in refuge and here in Canada

Afghanistan is an agricultural country where livestock is the main source of income for most of the people. Although hundreds of thousands of metric tons of livestock products are produced, large amounts of animal products are still imported to the country. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the opportunities and challenges confronting Afghanistan's self-sufficiency in livestock products. The data were collected from 48 key professionals by semi-structured interviews using a pre-designed questionnaire. More than 52% of the respondents hold bachelor's/DVM degrees, while the rest have master's (35.4%) and PhD (12.5%) degrees in veterinary (72.1%) and animal science (27.9%) fields. About 80% of the respondents believed that Afghanistan has sufficient capacity to become self-sufficient in the animal products sector. At the same time, only half of them thought that Afghanistan is moving on the right track towards self-sufficiency in animal production. Destruction of pastures (95.7% ), neighboring countries' interventions in the market (95.1%) and importation of low-quality animal products (89.4%), insufficient scientific research projects (84.8%) and funds (84.5%) in the animal health and production sector, lack of proper packaging (87.2%) and suitable domestic market (80%) for animal products, traditional husbandry system (83.3%), shortage of concentrated feeds (78.3%) and excessive paperwork for the investors (69.6%) are the main challenges in front of self-sufficiency in animal products. The results of this study could help policymakers prioritize the animal health and production sector and adjust existing policies regarding animal products to meet the country's needs and accepted standards

Background: This study intends to investigate the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and knowledge management practices, with a focus on travel and tourism industries specifically. The research is conducted using a descriptive-correlation approach and involves 72 businesses located in Qom, Mashhad, and Tehran. A total of 369 managers and personnel from these organizations participated in the study, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of knowledge management and its impact on organizational learning and ambidexterity within the tourism sector. Methods: In this study, descriptive-correlation research methodology was used. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 369 managers and personnel from 72 tourism organizations. The questionnaire focused on assessing the participants' perspectives on knowledge management strategies, organizational learning capability, and organizational ambidexterity. This quantitative approach allowed for the examination of relationships and mediation effects within the specified variables. Findings: The results of the study show substantial correlation between organizational ambidexterity, learning ability, and knowledge management techniques. It was found to be fascinating that the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and knowledge management strategies in the tourism setting was partially mediated by organizational learning capacity. Conclusion: In conclusion, tourism companies should place a high priority on implementing both explicit and tacit knowledge management strategies in order to attain structural ambidexterity. Effective HRM procedures as well as the advancement of knowledge management and information technology infrastructures must serve as the cornerstones of these strategies. Encouraging learning, unlearning, relearning, experimentation, and knowledge sharing are pivotal for enhancing organizational learning capability and, consequently, achieving organizational ambidexterity. This study underscores the need for a holistic approach that integrates human and technological elements to foster a dynamic and adaptable organizational structure in the tourism sector

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Cryptosporidiosis in Cattle in Lashkargah City, Helmand Province of Afghanistan

    Get PDF
Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease that affects humans and animals and is caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium spp. This was a descriptive study to determine the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts and its associated risk factors in cattle in Lashkargah City, Helmand province of Afghanistan. One hundred and fifty-seven cattle were selected randomly from the 37 areas of 8 districts of Lashkargah. To confirm the presence of Cryptosporidium spp., a modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique was applied to visualize the oocysts of the protozoa in fecal samples. A pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect additional information regarding demographic, hygienic conditions, and water sources of the animal and human population in the area. From the 157 studied cattle, the oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 3 samples (1.9%). At the same time, 56.1% of the studied villages were near the running water, and in 4.5% of cases, animal waste materials or residues ended up in the water sources. In brief, considering the husbandry practices, farm hygienic conditions, and water sources in the study area, there is a very likely higher prevalence of Cryptosporidium in Helmand province. High-scale province-wide researches are required to determine the incidence and prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in animal and human populations

Present study has been carried out at Vishav stream, which is one of the most live and perennial tributaries of River Jhelum of Kashmir valley. Vishav contributes major portion of discharge towards the Jhelum. Due to increase the population and over exploitation of fresh water resources and waste water disposal, the direct or indirect modifications and alterations in creating the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water have occurred profound and deleterious effects on human health and on the environment as a whole. In present investigation an attempt was made to find out the physico-chemical nature of Vishav stream, so as to have an insight into the level of pollution status in the stream. In order to have reasonable and wholesome information, a detail study of the stream course was conducted on monthly basis and the selection of sites was done keeping in mind different types of habitat features i.e., elevations, fast flowing areas, slow zones, as well as human interferences. Study showed that the deterioration of stream water quality at lower reaches as low transparency, DO and higher concentration of Ca, N, P, Cl etc. all pointing towards the nutrient enrichment
