Public Perception of Who is a Volunteer : An Examination of the Net-cost Approach from a Cross-Cultural Perspective
Volunteers are the cornerstones on which the voluntary sector is predicated. We are accustomed to using this phrase in every aspect of our lives, yet too little systematic work has been carried out to define this term in a rigorous and precise manner. Volunteering is the essence of the scholarly work of numerous academicians around the world, however there are many issues that arise when people report their own volunteering or attempt to define the term volunteer. No clear-cut definition that encompasses all aspects of volunteering exists. Often too many different activities and situations are aggregated into this concept (Cnaan, Handy, & Wadsworth, 1996; Scheier, 1980; Smith, 1995; Tremper, Seidman, & Tufts, 1994; Vineyard, 1993)

A proposal to study slow secondary particle distributions in pi -p and pp reactions in the 30 inch bubble chamber
A set of runs for the 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber for {pi}{sup -} and proton at various momenta is proposed for a total of 200,000 useable fames. The runs are aimed at providing quick answers to questions relating to the limiting fragmentation hypothesis as well as a preliminary survey of multiparticle final states

Search for charmed particles
We propose to use the CCM spectrometer to carry out a sensitive search for charmed particles produced in strong interactions at a nominal beam energy of 150 GeV/c. We limit ourselves to production in the beam diffraction region for reasons of acceptance and reconstruction. We present results of a test run undertaken in April 1975 to demonstrate the feasibility of K{sub S}{sup 0} trigger, which we incorporate in the present proposal. Results of the test are combined with new insights which increase our sensitivity to charmed particle production by a large factor. We request a total of 2 x 10{sup 11} negative pions at a rate of 10{sup 6} per pulse. With this illumination we estimate that we can measure a large number of hadronic decay modes. We make estimates of enhancements in mass spectra from charmed particle production and decay and calculate expected backgrounds using data from existing experiments. With conservative assumptions about the charmed particle model, we calculate effects corresponding to ten or more standard deviations in our most favorable channels
'Reaching the hard to reach' - lessons learned from the VCS (voluntary and community Sector). A qualitative study.
Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement.
Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services
Evidence for a nuclear compartment of transcription and splicing located at chromosome domain boundaries
The nuclear topography of splicing snRNPs, mRNA transcripts and chromosome domains in various mammalian cell types are described. The visualization of splicing snRNPs, defined by the Sm antigen, and coiled bodies, revealed distinctly different distribution patterns in these cell types. Heat shock experiments confirmed that the distribution patterns also depend on physiological parameters. Using a combination of fluorescencein situ hybridization and immunodetection protocols, individual chromosome domains were visualized simultaneously with the Sm antigen or the transcript of an integrated human papilloma virus genome. Three-dimensional analysis of fluorescence-stained target regions was performed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. RNA transcripts and components of the splicing machinery were found to be generally excluded from the interior of the territories occupied by the individual chromosomes. Based on these findings we present a model for the functional compartmentalization of the cell nucleus. According to this model the space between chromosome domains, including the surface areas of these domains, defines a three-dimensional network-like compartment, termed the interchromosome domain (ICD) compartment, in which transcription and splicing of mRNA occurs
Effectiveness of perampanel as the only add-on: Retrospective, multicenter, observational real-life study on epilepsy patients
Objective: Perampanel (PER) is indicated as adjunctive antiseizure medication (ASM) in adolescents and adults with epilepsy. Data from clinical trials show good efficacy and tolerability, while limited information is available on the routine clinical use of PER, especially when used as only add-on treatment. Methods: We performed an observational, retrospective, multicenter study on people with focal or generalized epilepsy aged >12 years, consecutively recruited from 52 Italian epilepsy centers. All patients received PER as the only add-on treatment to a background ASM according to standard clinical practice. Retention rate, seizure frequency, and adverse events were recorded at 3, 6, and 12 months after PER introduction. Subanalyses by early or late use of PER and by concomitant ASM were also conducted. Results: Five hundred and three patients were included (age 36.5 ± 19.9 years). Eighty-one percent had focal epilepsy. Overall, the retention rate was very high in the whole group (89% at 12 months) according with efficacy measures. No major differences were observed in the subanalyses, although patients who used PER as early add-on, as compared with late add-on, more often reached early seizure freedom at 3-month follow-up (66% vs 53%, P =.05). Treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 25%, far less commonly than in PER randomized trials. Significance: This study confirms the good efficacy and safety of PER for focal or generalized epilepsy in real-life conditions. We provide robust data about its effectiveness as only add-on treatment even in patients with a long-standing history of epilepsy and previously treated with many ASMs
Interpretation of Experimental J^PC Exotic Signals
We investigate theoretical interpretations of the 1.4 GeV J^PC exotic
resonance reported by the E852 collaboration. It is argued that interpretation
in terms of a hybrid meson is untenable. A K-matrix analysis shows that the 1.4
GeV enhancement in the E852 eta pi data can be understood as an interference of
a non-resonant Deck-type background and a resonance at 1.6 GeV. A final state
rescattering calculation shows that the 1.6 GeV hybrid has a eta pi width which

Diaspora Policies, Consular Services and Social Protection for Italian Citizens Abroad
AbstractAccording to some estimates, about 60 million people of Italian origin live outside of Italy today. To manage and, at first, encourage emigration, Italy has historically built a composite diaspora infrastructure. As discussed in the first part of this chapter, instruments to consult and represent politically citizens abroad have been core features of Italy's diaspora engagement policies. The second part of the chapter examines the social protection dimension of diaspora more closely and highlights the central role played by the Patronati (welfare advice centers). As explained, the Patronati are to this day a unique institution at the international level, by which Italians abroad can be helped, free of charge, to gain access to social protection in Italy and abroad
Negotiating care in the context of Finnish and Italian elder care policies
Negotiation is an integral part of all elder care, which by definition involves a relation between at least two people. In this article we analyse negotiations concerning elder care in the context of Finnish and Italian elder care policies. At the macro level negotiations on elder care are shaped by elder care policies and at the micro level by individual skills and resources. Our focus is on the negotiations on eligibility that take place when elders attempt to access care. The data consist of qualitative interviews with Finnish and Italian elders in need of care. The analysis of individual experiences of care negotiations reflects the implementation of elder care policies.
The results indicate that the most negotiated eligibility criteria when seeking access to elder care are need, money and social relations. These criteria are negotiated when seeking eligibility to different sources of care: informal care, grey market, market-based, non-profit and public services. In Italy, negotiation is particularly crucial when accessing grey market care. Cash as the main Italian elder care policy tool tends to enhance the role of and need for negotiation. In Finland, a greater part of elder care is provided by the public sector and therefore the process of negotiation is more standardized than in Italy
Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of the morphological development of neurons
BACKGROUND: The morphological development of neurons is a very complex process involving both genetic and environmental components. Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation are valuable tools in helping us unravel particular aspects of how individual neurons grow their characteristic morphologies and eventually form appropriate networks with each other. METHODS: A variety of mathematical models that consider (1) neurite initiation (2) neurite elongation (3) axon pathfinding, and (4) neurite branching and dendritic shape formation are reviewed. The different mathematical techniques employed are also described. RESULTS: Some comparison of modelling results with experimental data is made. A critique of different modelling techniques is given, leading to a proposal for a unified modelling environment for models of neuronal development. CONCLUSION: A unified mathematical and numerical simulation framework should lead to an expansion of work on models of neuronal development, as has occurred with compartmental models of neuronal electrical activity
