Laboratory guide to early life history stages of northeast Pacific fishes
This laboratory guide presents taxonomic information on eggs
and larvae of fishes of the Northeast Pacific Ocean (north of California) and the eastern Bering Sea. Included are early-life-history series, illustrations, and comparative descriptions of 232 species expected to spawn here, out of a total 627 species known to occur in marine waters of this area. Meristic and general life-history data are included, as well as diagnostic characters to help identify eggs and larvae. Most of this information has been gleaned from literature, with the addition of 200 previously unpublished illustrations. (PDF file contains 654 pages.
Displacement Data Assimilation
We show that modifying a Bayesian data assimilation scheme by incorporating
kinematically-consistent displacement corrections produces a scheme that is
demonstrably better at estimating partially observed state vectors in a setting
where feature information important. While the displacement transformation is
not tied to any particular assimilation scheme, here we implement it within an
ensemble Kalman Filter and demonstrate its effectiveness in tracking

Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Linkage Map for Arabidopsis thaliana
We have constructed a restriction fragment length polymorphism linkage map for the nuclear genome of the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The map, containing 90 randomly distributed molecular markers, is physically very dense; >50% of the genome is within 1.9 centimorgans, or approx 270 kilobase pairs, of the mapped DNA fragments. The map was based on the meiotic segregation of markers in two different crosses. The restriction fragment length polymorphism linkage groups were integrated with the five classically mapped linkage groups by virtue of mapped mutations included in these crosses. Markers consist of both cloned Arabidopsis genes and random low-copy-number genomic DNA clones that are able to detect polymorphisms with the restriction enzymes EcoRI, Bgl II, and/or Xba I. These cloned markers can serve as starting points for chromosome walking, allowing for the isolation of Arabidopsis genes of known map location. The restriction fragment length polymorphism map also can associate clones of unknown gene function with mutant phenotypes, and vice versa
The evolution of mass loaded supernova remnants: II. Temperature dependent mass injection rates
We investigate the evolution of spherically symmetric supernova remnants in which mass loading takes place due to conductively driven evaporation of embedded clouds. Numerical simulations reveal significant differences between the evolution of conductively mass loaded and the ablatively mass loaded remnants studied in Paper I. A main difference is the way in which conductive mass loading is extinguished at fairly early times, once the interior temperature of the remnant falls below ~ 107 K. Thus, at late times remnants that ablatively mass load are dominated by loaded mass and thermal energy, while those that conductively mass load are dominated by swept-up mass and kinetic energy. COMET: A Recipe for Learning and Using Large Ensembles on Massive Data
COMET is a single-pass MapReduce algorithm for learning on large-scale data.
It builds multiple random forest ensembles on distributed blocks of data and
merges them into a mega-ensemble. This approach is appropriate when learning
from massive-scale data that is too large to fit on a single machine. To get
the best accuracy, IVoting should be used instead of bagging to generate the
training subset for each decision tree in the random forest. Experiments with
two large datasets (5GB and 50GB compressed) show that COMET compares favorably
(in both accuracy and training time) to learning on a subsample of data using a
serial algorithm. Finally, we propose a new Gaussian approach for lazy ensemble
evaluation which dynamically decides how many ensemble members to evaluate per
data point; this can reduce evaluation cost by 100X or more

NOTES ON INDONESIAN FRESHWATER ALGAE - IV. Concerning Euastrum moebii (Borge) Scott & Prescott comb. nov. and Euastrum turgidum Wallich.
The desmid presently known as Mierasterias moebii (Borge) West & West is transferred back to the genus Euastrum where it was originally placed by its discoverer, together with its several varieties, for reasons that are discussed in detail. There are described one new variety, var. diplocanthylum from Australia, and one new forma, var. tetrachastriforme fa. latum from Borneo. New illustrations are given for Euastrum, turgidum Wall., and criteria are suggested for differentiating this plant from the closely similar E. moebii
