    Evolution of catalyst particle size during carbon single walled nanotube growth and its effect on the tube characteristics

    A series of Fe catalysts, with different mean diameters, supported on alumina with different molar ratios, was studied before and after carbon single walled nanotubes growth using magnetic measurements and Raman scattering techniques (laser excitation wavelengths from 1.17 to 2.54 eV) to follow changes on catalyst particle size and composition, as well as the relationship between particle size and diameter of nanotubes grown. In all cases, an increase and redistribution of the particle size after the growth was concluded based on the blocking temperature values and Langevin function analysis. This is explained in terms of agglomeration of particles due to carbon-induced liquefaction accompanied with an increase in the catalyst mobility. For large particles no direct correlation between the catalyst size and the nanotube diameters was observed.open22

    Investigation of thin films of organic-based magnets grown by physical vapor deposition

    Thin films of organic-based magnet, V[TCNE]x (TCNE: tetracyanoethylene), were deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) based reactive evaporation. The growth conditions were studied in detail. A saturated composition of V[TCNE]???1.9 was determined by optimizing the growth condition. Two sets of films with different V to TCNE ratios were characterized. Both films were magnetic ordered up to 400 K and held coercive field of 60 Oe at room temperature. With the presence of excess vanadium within the film, the increase of defects created by PVD results in significant change in electronic property.open0

    A New Moderately Repetitive DNA Sequence Family of Novel Organization

    In cloning adenovirus homologous sequences, from a human cosmid library, we identified a moderately repetitive DNA sequence family consisting of tandem arrays of 2.5 kb members. A member was sequenced and several non-adjacent, 15–20 bp G-C rich segments with homology to the left side of adenovirus were discovered. The copy number of 400 members is highly conserved among humans. Southern blots of partial digests of human DNA have verified the tandem array of the sequence family. The chromosomal location was defined by somatic cell genetics and in situ hybridization. Tandem arrays are found only on chromosomes 4 (4q31) and 19 (ql3.l-ql3.3). Homologous repetitive sequences are found in DNA of other primates but not in cat or mouse. Thus we have identified a new family of moderately repetitive DNA sequences, unique because of its organization in clustered tandem arrays, its length, its chromosomal location, and its lack of homology to other moderately repetitive sequence families

    Room-temperature organic-based spin polarizer

    We report a magnetic tunnel junction operating at room-temperature with organic magnetic semiconductor V[TCNE](x) (x similar to 2, TCNE: tetracyanoethylene) and Fe as the spin polarizer and analyzer while 10 mu rubrene layer serves as the tunnel barrier between them. At room-temperature, the magnetoresistance (MR) presents 16.7% of its peak value at 100K. We observed sign inversion of MR with increasing temperature, while the sign of the MR is independent of the polarity of the bias voltages. Our results suggest that V[TCNE](x) is a promising material for room-temperature spintronic applications.open5

    OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of left ventricular (LV) lead position on the risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmia in patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). BACKGROUND: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is a surrogate marker of heart failure (HF) status and associated risk. Data on the effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator (CRT-D) in patients with mild HF and better LVEF are limited. METHODS: In the MADIT-CRT (Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial With Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy) study, the echocardiography core laboratory assessed baseline LVEF independent of the enrolling centers and identified a range of LVEFs, including those >30% (i.e., beyond the eligibility criteria). Echocardiographic response with CRT, defined as percent change in left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), was analyzed in 3 prespecified LVEF groups: >30%, 26% to 30%, and 30% (in the range of 30.1% to 45.3%); 914 patients (50.5%) with LVEF 26% to 30%; and 199 patients with LVEF 30%: 22.3%; LVEF 26% to 30%: 20.1%; and LVEF 30% (hazard ratio [HR]: = 0.56 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.39 to 0.82], p = 0.003), LVEF 26% to 30% (HR: 0.67: [95% CI: 0.50 to 0.90], p = 0.007), and LVEF 0.1). CONCLUSIONS: In MADIT-CRT, the clinical benefit of CRT was evident regardless of baseline LVEF, including those with LVEF >30%, whereas the echocardiographic response was increased with increasing LVEF, indicating that CRT might benefit patients with better LVEF.
