Explaining the gender gaps in unemployment across OECD countries

    Get PDF
There is substantial heterogeneity in the gender gaps in unemployment across OECD countries. We incorporate labor market conditions, moral hazard and home production into a quantitative model of unemployment. The model can explain most of the gender gaps in unemployment across the OECD countries. We find that each component is quantitatively important to match the gender gaps in unemployment.Unemployment, gender gap, home production

Price search, consumption inequality, and expenditure inequality over the life cycle

In this paper, we incorporate a price search decision into a life cycle model and differentiate consumption from expenditure. Consumers with low wealth and bad income shocks search more for cheaper prices and pay less, which makes their consumption higher than in a model without search option. A plausibly calibrated version of our model predicts that the cross-sectional variance of consumption is about 17% smaller than the cross-sectional variance of expenditure throughout the life cycle. Price search has an alternative productive activity role for lower-income people to increase their consumption levels. We discuss other implications of price search over the life cycle as well.Consumption inequality, price search, incomplete markets, life cycle models, partial insurance

Global Imbalances, Current Account Rebalancing and Exchange Rate Adjustments

    Get PDF
We analyze the global imbalances and the required adjustments for rebalancing in current accounts and real exchange rates. We set up a two-country two-sector model for the US- China with two asymmetries. First, we assume that the size of China initially is one third of the US but its size becomes half of the US in the next ten years consistent with the fast growth expectations in China. Secondly, we assume that China initially runs a net export surplus against the US. Then we quantitatively study two adjustment scenarios. First scenario, called Slow Adjustment, assumes that in the process of growth, Chinese demand composition moves more towards domestic non-tradable sector. In this case, Chinese real exchange rate appreciates gradually and net export surplus also decreases slowly. Second scenario, called Quick Adjustment, assumes that in addition to the higher non-tradable share in output, net export surplus against US goes to zero quickly in five years. In this case, net export adjustment happens quickly and real exchange rates in China also appreciate faster and at a higher rate than Slow Adjustment case. Even though, global imbalances are eliminated faste in the Quick Adjustment case, high real appreciation in China hurts importers in the US. A comparison in terms of output shows that Slow Adjustments is preferred for both countries.Global imbalances, Current accounts, Exchange rate adjustments

    Pain Management

    Get PDF
Postoperative pain is caused by neuronal damage that occurs during the surgical procedure and the stimulation of the nociceptors. In postoperative period, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is painful, and pain management is quite difficult. The main purpose of postoperative pain relief is to reduce the pain of the patient, to contribute to the healing process, to shorten the length of hospital stay, and to reduce hospital costs. Techniques such as intravenous analgesia, epidural analgesia, and peripheral nerve blocks are used to prevent postoperative pain. In addition, oral and parenteral analgesics, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), nerve blocks, and periarticular injection methods are used as multimodal analgesia methods. Pain scales such as visual analogue scale (VAS), verbal descriptive scale (VDS), and numerical rating scale (NRS) are used as the standard methods in the evaluation of pain of patients. Systemic opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and local anesthetics are used for postoperative analgesia. Preemptive analgesia, defined as analgesia initiated prior to surgical incision, and multimodal analgesia have been shown to reduce opioid consumption associated with high complication rates. Postoperative pain management should be planned considering the clinical characteristics of the patient, experience of the anesthetist, and clinical facilities. Early postoperative analgesia reduces systemic complication rates and improves early rehabilitation, patient satisfaction, and quality of life

PROSPECTIVE SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON COMPETENCY OF GENERAL TEACHER BEHAVIORS

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to describe the perception on competency of the prospective secondary mathematics teachers in terms of general teacher behaviors. The sample consisted of 104 prospective teachers who were about to graduate. The data for the study were collected through “Prospective Teacher Competency Scale” including 5 dimensions and 43 items with a Likert-type grading. The five dimensions were 1) subject matter, 2) designing, planning, and administering instruction, 3) assessment and evaluation, 4) cooperation with others concerned, 5) professional development. As a result of this study, it was observed that prospective secondary mathematics teachers had a "fairly" level of proficiency perception in terms of general teaching behaviors.  Article visualizations

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in IgA vasculitis: Neuroimaging of a 14-year-old child

    Get PDF
IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is a leukocytoclastic vasculitis and characterized by involvement of small vessels in skin, gastrointestinal system, joints, kidneys, and less frequently other organs. It is the commonest vasculitis in childhood and etiology is not completely known. Neurological manifestations of IgAV are very rare and usually seen in patients with severe hypertension or as an uncommon feature such as peripheral neuropathy. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinic-radiologic entity characterized with temporary vasogenic edema developing typically in posterior circulation of the brain and has been reported as a rare manifestation of IgAV. In this paper, a PRES case of 14-year-old male with IgAV is reported and etiopathogenesis was discussed with literature. Diagnosis was made by magnetic resonance imaging because of the existence of neurological symptoms (headache and visual loss) during the course of disease. His radiological findings have resolved with therapy. Although neurological involvement is a rare manifestation in IgAV, we recommend magnetic resonance imaging in such patients for diagnosis and evaluation of complications

In this study, average quality growth and upward inflation bias are estimated for a set of 51 goods by using six waves of TURKSTAT Household Budget Surveys from 2003 to 2008 and consumer prices in Turkey. Using instrumental variables approach suggested by Bils and Klenow (2001), the annual average quality growth for these items over this period is estimated to be 3.88 percent, of which 2.03 percentage points have shown up as in consumer price inflation.Inflation rates, Quality bias

The empirical performance of transaction period length in cash-in-advance models of money demand

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Cash-in-advance models of money demand make strong predictions about stochastic properties of key endogenous macroeconomic variables. Hodrick, Kocherlakota, and Lucas (1991) showed that the models by Lucas (1984), Svensson (1985), and Stokey, and Lucas (1987) were not generating dataset consistent with the sample values. In this study we investigate whether Arnwine (2000) can generate consistent statistical values of key endogenous variables. We use the same methods as Hodrick, Kocherlakota, and Lucas (1991).Arslan, YavuzM.S

Protectıng and projectıng ıdentıty ın Jhumpa Lahırı's novels: the namesake and the lowland

This study presents a detailed analysis of the Indian American writer Jhumpa Lahiri’s novels The Namesake and The Lowland within the light of postcolonial theory. As an Indian immigrant in the United States, and a Pulitzer Prize award-winning author, Lahiri best depicts the struggles of Indian rooted people in forming an identity in a foreign land. In this process of constructing an identity, the characters’ in-betweenness will be depicted through the concepts of cultural clash, hybridity, displacement and dual identities. Lahiri’s first novel The Namesake is a portrayal of an Indian immigrant family who moves to the United States in pursuit of a new life and their becoming an in-between society in a foreign land and culture. While the first generation try to preserve their roots and national Indian identity; their children, the second generation is torn between the Indian culture they are imposed in family and the American culture they wish to embrace. The Lowland is Lahiri’s combination of the Indian culture and the American life within the embodiment of two brothers. The struggle to survive in a foreign society with an Indian background and the fight for national values in homeland are the main concerns of this novel. Since both of Lahiri’s works reflect the identity chaos and duality, this study will be an analysis of these two novels within the frame of postcolonial concepts such as hybridity, ambivalence, in-betweenness and otherness.
