DETC2004-57620 RUNNING UNDERGRADUATE PROJECTS IN DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES: IMPLEMENTING A HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEM IN A HISPANIC, BORDER COMMUNITY
ABSTRACT An information system was designed for a non-profit organization located in an international, developing community for an undergraduate engineering course. The project team went through the process of identifying needs, generating concepts, selecting a design, and implementing and testing the final design. In this paper, similarities and differences of this project compared to other projects in the course are explored. The team was confronted with unique problems resulting from working with an international sponsor in a developing community. Communication and donations of varying types were important players in overcoming these obstacles. FRAME OF REFERENCE Interdisciplinary Design at the University of Arizona ENGR 498, Cross-disciplinary Engineering Design, is a two-semester course at the University of Arizona in which teams of students from different majors work with a project sponsor on a single design project. A highly abstracted version of the design process taught in ENGR 498 is shown i
The Social Justice Teaching Collaborative: A Collective Turn Towards Critical Teacher Education
In this article, we share the collaborative curricular work of an interdisciplinary Social Justice Teaching Collaborative (SJTC) from a PWI university. Members of the SJTC worked strategically to center social justice across required courses pre-service teachers are required to take: Introduction to Education, Sociocultural Studies in Education, and Inclusive Education. We share our conceptualization of social justice and guiding theoretical frameworks that have shaped our pedagogy and curriculum. These frameworks include democratic education, critical pedagogy, critical race theory, critical whiteness studies, critical disability studies, and feminist and intersectionality theory. We then detail changes made across courses including examples of readings and assignments. Finally, we conclude by offering reflections, challenges, and lessons learned for collaborative work within teacher education and educational leadership.

Measurement of Bottom versus Charm as a Function of Transverse Momentum with Electron-Hadron Correlations in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
The momentum distribution of electrons from semi-leptonic decays of charm and
bottom for mid-rapidity |y|<0.35 in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV is
measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)
over the transverse momentum range 2 < p_T < 7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of
electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined
using partial D/D^bar --> e^{+/-} K^{-/+} X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It
is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4
GeV/c in p_T. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log (FONLL) perturbative
quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation agrees with the data within the
theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom
production cross section at this energy is \sigma_{b\b^bar}= 3.2
^{+1.2}_{-1.1}(stat) ^{+1.4}_{-1.3}(syst) micro b.Comment: 432 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.

Cross section and double helicity asymmetry for eta mesons and their comparison to neutral pion production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries for inclusive hadron production
in polarized p+p collisions are sensitive to helicity--dependent parton
distribution functions, in particular to the gluon helicity distribution,
Delta(g). This study focuses on the extraction of the double-helicity asymmetry
in eta production: polarized p+p --> eta + X, the eta cross section, and the
eta/pi^0 cross section ratio. The cross section and ratio measurements provide
essential input for the extraction of fragmentation functions that are needed
to access the helicity-dependent parton distribution functions.Comment: 432 authors from 62 institutions, 13 pages, 5 figures, and 3 tables.

Identified charged hadron production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 and 62.4 GeV
Transverse momentum distributions and yields for , ,
and in collisions at =200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity
are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). These data provide important baseline spectra for comparisons with
identified particle spectra in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. We present the
inverse slope parameter , mean transverse momentum and
yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other
measurements at different in and collisions. We
also present the scaling properties such as scaling, scaling on the
spectra between different energies. To discuss the mechanism of the
particle production in collisions, the measured spectra are compared to
next-to-leading-order or next-to-leading-logarithmic perturbative quantum
chromodynamics calculations.Comment: 431 authors from 62 institutions, 32 pages, 23 figures, and 18

Medium modification of jet fragmentation in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV measured in direct photon-hadron correlations
The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron
correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the
photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the
ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^\gamma is used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation
function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron
yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_
AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates
modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to
energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T
is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of
the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.Comment: 562 authors, 70 insitutions, 8 pages, and 3 figures. Submitted to

Measurements of elliptic and triangular flow in high-multiplicity HeAu collisions at GeV
We present the first measurement of elliptic () and triangular ()
flow in high-multiplicity HeAu collisions at
GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in
pseudorapidity, are compared in HeAu and in collisions and
indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier
components for the correlations observed in the HeAu system. The
collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic and triangular
anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding
event planes. The values are comparable to those previously measured in
Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy.
Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models
where the hot spots created by the impact of the three He nucleons on the
Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The
agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity
quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.Comment: 630 authors, 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. v2 is the version accepted

Double Helicity Dependence of Jet Properties from Dihadrons in Longitudinally Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
It has been postulated that partonic orbital angular momentum can lead to a
significant double-helicity dependence in the net transverse momentum of
Drell-Yan dileptons produced in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions.
Analogous effects are also expected for dijet production. If confirmed by
experiment, this hypothesis, which is based on semi-classical arguments, could
lead to a new approach for studying the contributions of orbital angular
momentum to the proton spin. We report the first measurement of the
double-helicity dependence of the dijet transverse momentum in longitudinally
polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV from data taken by the PHENIX
experiment in 2005 and 2006. The analysis deduces the transverse momentum of
the dijet from the widths of the near- and far-side peaks in the azimuthal
correlation of the dihadrons. When averaged over the transverse momentum of the
triggered particle, the difference of the root-mean-square of the dijet
transverse momentum between like- and unlike-helicity collisions is found to be
-37 +/- 88(stat) +/- 14(syst) MeV/c.Comment: 433 authors from 62 institutions, 10 pages text, 5 figures, and 3

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from to 200 GeV
Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions,
, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions,
, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies.
Included are distributions for AuAu collisions at ,
130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, CuCu collisions at
and 62.4 GeV, CuAu collisions at
GeV, UU collisions at GeV,
Au collisions at GeV, HeAu collisions at
GeV, and collisions at
GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms
of the number of nucleon participants, , and the number of
constituent quark participants, . For all collisions
down to GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data
are better described by scaling with than scaling with . Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density,
, and the ratio of to ,
the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all
systems.Comment: 706 authors, 32 pages, 20 figures, 34 tables, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010,

High p_T Direct Photon and pi^0 Triggered Azimuthal Jet Correlations in sqrt(s)=200 GeV p+p Collisions
Correlations of charged hadrons of 1 < pT < 10 GeV/c with high pT direct
photons and pi^ 0 mesons in the range 5 <pT < 15 GeV/c are used to study jet
fragmentation in the photon+jet and di-jet channels, respectively. The
magnitude of the partonic transverse momentum, kT, is obtained by comparing to
a model incorporating a Gaussian kT smearing. The sensitivity of the associated
charged hadron spectra to the underlying fragmentation function is tested and
the data are compared to calculations using recent global fit results. The
shape of the direct photon-associated hadron spectrum as well as its charge
asymmetry are found to be consistent with a sample dominated by quark-gluon
Compton scattering. No significant evidence of fragmentation photon correlated
production is observed within experimental uncertainties.Comment: 431 authors, 18 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, RevTeX-4. Submitted to
