    The article discusses three dance texts from Estonian Ingria that are included in the collections of the Estonian Folklore Archive and have been published in different ways in different periods. The focus of the article is on Ullo Toomi’s work as collector, arranger and choreographer from the 1930s until the 1950s. During his field excursions Ullo Toomi did not observe informal dance events, but the ones that were performed by an experienced group with its own repertoire. Since there are only few studies and publications about the Ingrian dances, Ullo Toomi’s work has a vast importance in all its levels, from the fieldwork to publications. Toomi’s dance publication styles varied according to the time of the publication: before the Second World War he tried to follow, as exactly as possible, the original fieldwork material, but later on, in the 1950s, the original material functioned only as a basis for new national stage dances that Toomi was constructing. The method in this article is to compare and reconstruct dance texts so that we could understand them better, and to place dances into their contexts.     Quantifying ADHD Symptoms in Open-Ended Everyday Life Contexts With a New Virtual Reality Task

    Objective: To quantify goal-directed behavior and ADHD symptoms in naturalistic conditions, we developed a virtual reality task, EPELI (Executive Performance in Everyday LIving), and tested its predictive, discriminant and concurrent validity. Method: We collected EPELI data, conventional neuropsychological task data, and parent-ratings of executive problems and symptoms in 38 ADHD children and 38 typically developing controls. Results: EPELI showed predictive validity as the ADHD group exhibited higher percentage of irrelevant actions reflecting lower attentional-executive efficacy and more controller movements and total game actions, both indicative of hyperactivity-impulsivity. Further, the five combined EPELI measures showed excellent discriminant validity (area under curve 88 %), while the correlations of the EPELI efficacy measure with parent-rated executive problems (r = .57) and ADHD symptoms (r = .55) pointed to its concurrent validity. Conclusion: We provide a proof-of-concept validation for a new virtual reality tool for ecologically valid assessment of ADHD symptoms.Peer reviewe

    The purpose of this article is to introduce different sources of information and materials available about Ingrian Finnish traditional dances. By comparing them it is possible to find out what and how was danced in Ingria. The second part of the article analyses the most typical dances and dance types. Information about the dances is collected and the research is conducted aiming at the reconstruction of dances so that they could be danced again by younger generations of Ingrian Finns. Before the World War II, the Ingrian tradition was collected and published as a part of Finnish culture but after the war it was ignored for a long time. In addition to Finland, dances were published in Estonia and Karelia and some fieldwork was doneamong the Ingrian Finns who had moved to Sweden. In Ingrian tradition, singing and dancing are close together and that is why quite a lot of information about dances can be found in song publications. The most important researchers and writers are AskoPulkkinen, Viola Malmi, Ingrid Rüütel, Pirkko-Liisa Rausmaa and Anneli Asplund. Dance types in Ingrian tradition:1. Old metrical song dance in which old songs are performed by dancing in a chain, circle, lines or alone without partner. There is information about even younger dance elements as in contra dances to be used together with old metrical runo songs.2. Röntyskäs in Northern Ingria. In them two couples dance at the same time.3. Figures accompanied by new folk songs with rhymes. Other couples are standing in a circle and the dance grows clockwise as a progression.4. A few dances that have been popular all over Finland (weaving, couples dances) and ring games.5. Lancier quadrille and newer couples dances as Pas d’Espagne, Vengerka, Krakoviak and waltzes.6. Quadrille’s variants in Ingria are pretty similar to Northern Russian quadrille

    EPELI: a novel virtual reality task for the assessment of goal-directed behavior in real-life contexts

    A recently developed virtual reality task, EPELI (Executive Performance in Everyday LIving), quantifies goal-directed behavior in naturalistic conditions. Participants navigate a virtual apartment, performing household chores given by a virtual character. EPELI aims to tap attention, executive function, and prospective memory. In the present study, we examined several key properties of EPELI in 77 typically developing 9–13-year-old children, namely its internal consistency, age and gender differences, sensitivity to gaming experience, head-mounted display (HMD) type, and verbal recall ability, as well as its relationships with parent-rated everyday executive problems. Of the eight EPELI measures, the following six showed good internal consistency: task and navigation efficacy, number of correctly performed tasks and overall actions, time monitoring, and controller movement. Some measures were associated with age, gender, or verbal encoding ability. Moreover, EPELI performance was associated with parent-rated everyday executive problems. There were no significant associations of gaming background, task familiarity, or HMD type with the EPELI measures. These results attest to the reliability and validity of this new virtual reality tool for the ecologically valid assessment of attention, executive functions, and prospective memory in children
