Versatile flux system grows large, well-formed, stoichiometric single crystals of mixed oxides of the transition-metal elements. These crystals have important uses in the microwave field, and applications as lasers and masers in communications

Swansea Maritime and Industrial Museum: Design and Development

The following is a description of a possible design for a major new museum development. It should be pointed out at the beginning that it is the concept of the present Keeper of Technology, and that it may not take shape in entirely the manner described. Thus the views expressed may not necessarily be those of the Curator of of the local authority who established it.Swansea Maritime & Industrial Museum was established in 1974 with great foresight by the City of Swansea, and it is housed in the former 'Coast Lines' warehouse at the South Dock, both of which had ceased commercial operations some years previously. It was conceived as an integral part of a large and diverse leisure complex, part of which has already been completed. The primary objective of a museum of this nature must be to show the' visitor the rich variety of trades and projects which, though some have risen to prominence and since faded away, have made the City world famous. It is not intended to stop at a particular and arbitrarily chosen time in the past, for there is continuity: coal is still mined in quantity, tinplate is now made in continuous form rather than by hand processes, ceramics have been replaced by glass and in the processing of non-ferrous metals copper, zinc and lead have waned but nickel and aluminium have come to the fore. Neither should the City encourage belief in the idea of some golden age which has now passed. To this list should be added relatively new industries such as oil refining and chemical manufacture and, most recently, the making of silicon chips. Many of these activities depend directly on port facilities which have developed accordingly, Swansea's association with the sea being pre-industrial and having commenced in Viking times

Governing beyond PISA:knowledge, networks and narratives

OECD’s search for a new set of prescriptions for governing education is expressed in their Governing Complex Education Systems project (GCES), which seeks to combine identification of best practices in system organisation, with specific narratives of equity and quality supported by metrics that create a “robust evidence base” for policy. This paper analyses the content and direction of GCES, considers its take up in policy in Scotland, especially as reflected in the aftermath of the 2015 OECD report on improving education there, and of the 2016 PISA results. The paper discusses the content of the recommendations, especially as they relate to the key concepts of knowledge, networks and narratives, and their attempted translation into policy, and concludes by identifying tensions within OECD’s governing project.

    Naval Presence: Sizing the Force

During the period from 1946 through 1982 US military forces were postured some 259 times as a political instrument in support of national policy. In over 80 percent of these instances, naval forces were employed. In examining these naval operations a number of problems were quickly identified

CCN Family: Matricellular Proteins in Cartilage and Bone Development

    Get PDF
The extracellular matrix is the intricate scaffolding which surrounds and supports cells and helps to organize them into tissues and organs. The CCN family of matricellular proteins helps to regulate and modulate production, degradation, and remodeling of the extracellular matrix. In this chapter, we review the extracellular matrix of cartilage and bone, including an overview of chondrogenesis and skeletogenesis, and summarize the importance of the CCN proteins in establishment of the skeletal system. CCN proteins have both positive and negative regulatory roles in skeletal development, and their abnormal expression is related to the pathogenesis of several diseases observed in cartilage and bone that arise when inflammation or tissue injury becomes chronic, including fibrosis, arthritis, and cancer. Understanding the biological functions of the CCN proteins within this context offers opportunities for developing therapeutics by targeting CCN functions
