Smaller SPS system sizing tradeoffs
The solar power satellite and associated microwave system was reoptimized with larger antennas (at 2.45 GHz), reduced output powers, and smaller rectennas. Four constraints were considered: (1) the 23 mw/sq cm ionospheric limit; (2) a higher (54 mW/sq cm) ionospheric limit; (3) the 23 KW/sq cm thermal limit in the antenna; and (4) an improved thermal design allowing 33% additional waste heat. The differential costs in electricity for seven antenna/rectenna configurations operating at 2.45 GHz and five satellite systems operating at 5.8 GHz were calculated. It is concluded that a larger antenna/smaller rectenna configurations are economically feasible under certain conditions; a transmit antenna diameters should be limited to 1 to 1.5 Km for 2.45 GHz operation and .75 to 1.0 Km for 5.8 GHz; the present ionospheric limit of 23 mw/sq cm is probably too low and should be raised after ionospheric heating tests and studies are completed; the 5.8 GHz configurations are constrainted by antenna thermal limitations, rather than ionospheric limits; and multiple (two to four) antennas on a single solar satellite are recommended regardless of the particular antenna/rectenna configuration chosen
Results from the Analysis of Crystal Ball Meson Production Measurements at BNL
The Crystal Ball spectrometer, with its nearly complete angular coverage, is
an efficient detector of photon and neutron final states. While installed in
the C6 beamline of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of Brookhaven
National Laboratory (BNL), this feature was used in a series of precise
measurements of reactions with all-neutral final states. Here we concentrate on
the analysis of data from the pion-induced reactions: pi- p --> gamma n, pi- p
--> pi0 n, pi- p --> eta n, and pi- p --> pi0 pi0 n.Comment: Conference contribution to MESON 2006 - Krakow, Pola
Effect of exotic S=+1 resonances on scattering data
We consider the effect of an exotic S=+1 resonance on the
scattering of neutral kaons off protons. Explicit results are presented for the

The energies and residues of the nucleon resonances N(1535) and N(1650)
We extract pole positions for the N(1535) and N(1650) resonances using two
different models. The positions are determined from fits to different subsets
of the existing , and data
and found to be 1515(10)--i85(15)MeV and 1660(10)--i65(10)MeV, when the data is
described in terms of two poles. Sensitivity to the choice of fitted data is
explored. The corresponding and residues of these poles

Satellite power system: Concept development and evaluation program. Volume 3: Power transmission and reception. Technical summary and assessment
Efforts in the DOE/NASA concept development and evaluation program are discussed for the solar power satellite power transmission and reception system. A technical summary is provided together with a summary of system assessment activities. System options and system definition drivers are described. Major system assessment activities were in support of the reference system definition, solid state system studies, critical technology supporting investigations, and various system and subsystem tradeoffs. These activities are described together with reference system updates and alternative concepts for each of the subsystem areas. Conclusions reached as a result of the numerous analytical and experimental evaluations are presented. Remaining issues for a possible follow-on program are identified
Differential Rearing Alters Forced Swim Test Behavior, Fluoxetine Efficacy, and Post-Test Weight Gain in Male Rats

The rodent forced swim test (FST) is commonly used as a preclinical model of depression, with increases in escape-directed behavior reflecting antidepressant effects, and increases in immobility reflecting behavioral despair. Environmental enrichment leads to serotonergic alterations in rats, but it is unknown whether these alterations may influence the efficacy of common antidepressants. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were reared in enriched (EC), standard (SC), or isolated (IC) conditions. Following the rearing period, fluoxetine (10 or 20 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered 23.5 hrs, 5 hrs, and 1 hr before locomotor and FST measures. Following locomotor testing and FST exposure, rats were weighed to assess fluoxetine-, FST-, and environmental condition-induced moderations in weight gain. Results revealed an antidepressant effect of environmental enrichment and a depressant effect of isolation. Regardless of significant fluoxetine effects on locomotor activity, fluoxetine generally decreased swimming and increased immobility in all three environmental conditions, with IC-fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) rats and EC-fluoxetine (20 mg/kg) rats swimming less than vehicle counterparts. Subchronic 20 mg/kg fluoxetine also induced significant weight loss, and differential rearing appeared to moderate weight gain following FST stress. These results suggest that differential rearing has the ability to alter FST behaviors, fluoxetine efficacy, and post-stressor well-being. Moreover, 20 mg/kg fluoxetine, administered subchronically, may lead to atypical effects of those commonly observed in the FST, highlighting the importance and impact of both environmental condition and dosing regimen in common animal models of depression
Model dependence of single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data
Model dependence of multipole analysis has been explored through
energy-dependent and single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data. The MAID
energy-dependent solution has been used as input for an event generator
producing realistic pseudo data. These were fitted using the SAID
parametrization approach to determine single-energy and energy-dependent
solutions over a range of lab photon energies from 200 to 1200 MeV. The
resulting solutions were found to be consistent with the input amplitudes from
MAID. Fits with a -squared per datum of unity or less were generally
achieved. We discuss energy regions where consistent results are expected, and
explore the sensitivity of fits to the number of included single- and
double-polarization observables. The influence of Watson's theorem is examined
