    Mixing in lock-release gravity currents propagating up a slope

    Lock-exchange gravity currents propagating up a slope are investigated by large eddy simulations, focusing on the entrainment and mixing processes occurring between the dense current and the ambient fluid. Relevant parameters, such as the aspect ratio of the initial volume of dense fluid in the lock R, the angle between the bottom boundary and the horizontal direction \u3b8 and the depth aspect ratio \u3c6, are varied. The numerical results are compared with laboratory experiments and a good agreement is found. Entrainment and mixing in a lock-release gravity current are studied using different entrainment parameters and an energy budget method. The entrainment is found to depend on both Froude, Fr, and Reynolds, Re, numbers. In addition, the dependence of both entrainment and mixing on the parameters varied is discussed. The entrainment decreases with increasing steepness of the bottom and R. Irreversible mixing is not affected by the varied parameters during the slumping phase, while during the successive phases of motion, it is found to decrease with the increase of \u3b8 and R. Low entrainment and mixing occur for \u3c6 <

    Large Eddy Simulations of sediment entrainment induced by a lock-exchange gravity current

    Large Eddy simulations of lock-exchange gravity currents propagating over a mobile reach are presented. The numerical setting allows to investigate the sediment pick up induced by the currents and to study the underlying mechanisms leading to sediment entrainment for different Grashof numbers and grain sizes. First, the velocity field and the bed shear-stress distribution are investigated, along with turbulent structures formed in the flow, before the current reaches the mobile bed. Then, during the propagation of the current above the erodible section of the bed the contour plots of the entrained material are pre- sented as well as the time evolution of the areas covered by the current and by the sediment at this section. The numerical outcomes are compared with experimental data showing a very good agreement. Overall, the study confirms that sediment pick up is prevalent at the head of the current where the strongest turbulence occurs. Further, above the mobile reach of the bed, settling process seems to be of minor importance, with the entrained material being advected downstream by the current. Additionally, the study shows that, although shear stress is the main mechanism that sets particles in motion, turbu- lent bursts as well as vertical velocity fluctuations are also necessary to counteract the falling velocity of the particles and maintain them into suspension. Finally, the analysis of the stability conditions of the current shows that, from one side, sediment concentration gives a negligible contribution to the stability of the front of the current and from the other side, the stability conditions provided by the current do not allow sediments to move into the ambient fluid

    Effect of annealing on structure and superconducting properties in Fe(Se,Te)

    Abstract In this paper, the effect of post synthesis annealing treatments on a Fe(Se,Te) polycrystalline material is evaluated and discussed. The samples have been obtained via melting route. The material has been subjected to a high-temperature annealing treatment, carried out for 45 h at 680 °C. The role of the cooling step was investigated comparing samples obtained after a controlled cooling or after quenching in liquid nitrogen. From a morpho-structural point of view, the annealing treatment improves homogeneity, with respect to pristine samples, and influences secondary phase precipitate morphology. Regarding superconducting properties, a key role of the cooling procedure is assessed: controlled cooling leads in fact to a significant improvement of high field behaviour with respect to the melted material, while quenched samples are characterized by a worsening of the superconducting properties. Despite the overall worsening, however, the quenched samples show evidence of the presence of superconducting phases characterized by a remarkably high critical temperature (Tc > 18 K), observed for these materials only in films or under pressure

    Effect of oxygen contamination on densification of Fe(Se,Te)

    Abstract The optimization of sintering behaviour of iron chalcogenides superconducting materials is mandatory to enhance their critical current density, in order to pursuit their application in the production of superconducting wires. In this context it has been investigated here the effect of oxygen contamination on the material densification, considering the issues related to industrial oxygen-free isolated production lines. Our results show that the densification process is negatively affected by oxygen contamination. However, despite the difference in density, all sintered samples are characterized by similar structural and morphological features, and show comparable electrical and magnetic properties, with low critical current densities (Jc<103 A/cm2). These results suggest that densification is not the key limiting factor in these conditions, and that grain boundary or misorientation factors may play a greater role in limiting the performance of sintered iron chalcogenides superconductors

    Respiratory symptoms in children living near busy roads and their relationship to vehicular traffic: results of an Italian multicenter study (SIDRIA 2)

    BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have provided evidence that exposure to vehicular traffic increases the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and may exacerbate pre-existing asthma in children. Self-reported exposure to road traffic has been questioned as a reliable measurement of exposure to air pollutants. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there were specific effects of cars and trucks traffic on current asthma symptoms (i.e. wheezing) and cough or phlegm, and to examine the validity of self-reported traffic exposure. METHODS: The survey was conducted in 2002 in 12 centers in Northern, Center and Southern Italy, different in size, climate, latitude and level of urbanization. Standardized questionnaires filled in by parents were used to collect information on health outcomes and exposure to traffic among 33,632 6-7 and 13-14 years old children and adolescents. Three questions on traffic exposure were asked: the traffic in the zone of residence, the frequency of truck and of car traffic in the street of residence. The presence of a possible response bias for the self-reported traffic was evaluated using external validation (comparison with measurements of traffic flow in the city of Turin) and internal validations (matching by census block, in the cities of Turin, Milan and Rome). RESULTS: Overall traffic density was weakly associated with asthma symptoms but there was a stronger association with cough or phlegm (high traffic density OR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.49). Car and truck traffic were independently associated with cough or phlegm. The results of the external validation did not support the existence of a reporting bias for the observed associations, for all the self-reported traffic indicators examined. The internal validations showed that the observed association between traffic density in the zone of residence and respiratory symptoms did not appear to be explained by an over reporting of traffic by parents of symptomatic subjects. CONCLUSION: Children living in zones with intense traffic are at higher risk for respiratory effects. Since population characteristics are specific, the results of validation of studies on self-reported traffic exposure can not be generalized

    Assessment of solution algorithms for LES of turbulent flows using OpenFoam

    We validate and test two algorithms for the time integration of the Boussinesq form of the Navier\u2014Stokes equations within the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology for turbulent flows. The algorithms are implemented in the OpenFOAM framework. From one side, we have implemented an energy-conserving incremental-pressure Runge\u2013Kutta (RK4) projection method for the solution of the Navier\u2013Stokes equations together with a dynamic Lagrangian mixed model for momentum and scalar subgrid-scale (SGS) fluxes; from the other side we revisit the PISO algorithm present in OpenFOAM (pisoFoam) in conjunction with the dynamic eddy-viscosity model for SGS momentum fluxes and a Reynolds Analogy for the scalar SGS fluxes, and used for the study of turbulent channel flows and buoyancy-driven flows. In both cases the validity of the anisotropic filter function, suited for non-homogeneous hexahedral meshes, has been studied and proven to be useful for industrial LES. Preliminary tests on energy-conservation properties of the algorithms studied (without the inclusion of the subgrid-scale models) show the superiority of RK4 over pisoFoam, which exhibits dissipative features. We carried out additional tests for wall-bounded channel flow and for Rayleigh\u2013B\ue8nard convection in the turbulent regime, by running LES using both algorithms. Results show the RK4 algorithm together with the dynamic Lagrangian mixed model gives better results in the cases analyzed for both first- and second-order statistics. On the other hand, the dissipative features of pisoFoam detected in the previous tests reflect in a less accurate evaluation of the statistics of the turbulent field, although the presence of the subgrid-scale model improves the quality of the results compared to a correspondent coarse direct numerical simulation. In case of Rayleigh\u2013B\ue9nard convection, the results of pisoFoam improve with increasing values of Rayleigh number, and this may be attributed to the Reynolds Analogy used for the subgrid-scale temperature fluxes. Finally, we point out that the present analysis holds for hexahedral meshes. More research is need for extension of the methods proposed to general unstructured grids
