Some Reflections about Wittgenstein´s Bezugssystem
Only a few months before his death, Wittgenstein
invited us to imagine "that some propositions, of the form
of empirical propositions, were hardened and functioned
as channels for such empirical propositions as were not
hardened but fluid; nevertheless he warned "this relation
altered with time, in that fluid propositions hardened, and
hard ones became fluid (OC 96). Those hardened
propositions provide a certainty which is "like a mighty
force whose point of application does not move, and so no
work is accomplished by it (Z 402). There are many things
that seem to be fixed, things which are removed from the
traffic: they are "so to speak shunted onto an unused
siding (OC 210). Those things just give "our way of
looking at things, and our researches, their form (OC
211). Maybe they were once disputed; but perhaps, for
unthinkable ages, they have belonged to the scaffolding of
our thoughts
The Error of Thinking that the Picture of Actual Dreams can be Used in only one Way
In 1914, the Spanish novelist, dramatist, poet and philosopher
Miguel de Unamuno published one of his well-known
works, Niebla. Unamuno allows that his characters speak
and speak although they say nothing at all: in this way the
author begins believing he takes his characters by the
hand, but in the end becomes his characters´ fiction. And
not only does Unamuno give free rein to his characters´
dialogues but describes thoughts and feelings in great
detail too; as a matter of fact, he uses expressions of the
kind of (Unamuno 1996, 180) "si Augusto hubiera podido
leer en el espÃritu de Rosarioâ€? (`if Augusto could have read
in Rosario´s spirit´), or (ib, 204) "¡Oh, si pudiesen verme
(`Oh
Victor, if they could see inside me, I am sure they would
not say such a thing!´). Up to this point there is nothing
special about Niebla, but before committing suicide,
Augusto decides to consult Unamuno: that is, the main
character has a meeting with the author. But as soon as
Augusto begins to tell his life and misfortune, Unamuno
invites his character to save himself such a work because
[Unamuno] knew the ups and downs of his life as well as
Augusto himself´). Unamuno proves his words quoting
Augusto´s secrets; so the character, absolutely terrified,
trembling and as if he were in front of an unbelievable
being, murmurs: "puesto que usted parece saber sobre mÃ
tanto como sé yo mismo, acaso adivine mi propósito
(`since you seem to know about my life as much as I do
know, maybe you should guess my intention´)
After describing the main lines of the systems of beliefs Quine and Wittgenstein expounded, I make reference in this paper to the similarities and differences Pieranna Garavaso and Danièle Moyal-Sharrock find between both systems. Through the critique of these interpretations, I will place emphasis on one aspect of the Wittgensteinian system of beliefs which, from my point of view, is of highest importance. I am referring specifically to the possibility of revising even the most basic beliefs of this system. The analysis of this problem will lead me to approach another very important question, i. e.: would the revision of our most fundamental beliefs mean that the concept of humanity itself lose all sense
According to Danièle Moyal-Sharrock and Avrum Stroll, there are compelling reasons for talking about a “third Wittgenstein” whose corpus would be made up of all the works written by the Viennese philosopher following 1946, including the second part of his Philosophical Investigations. The main reasons are the description of a new form of foundationalism in which foundational items and the items which rest upon them do not belong to the same category; the grammaticalization of experience; the dissolution of the mind-body problem, and the demystification of scepticism. In this paper, I will not only analyze these arguments, but I will also bear in mind the main differences between the so-called “first” and “second Wittgenstein” to conclude that it doesn’t make sense to talk about a “third Wittgenstein”.Según Danièle Moyal-Sharrock y Avrum Stroll, hay razones de peso para hablar de un “tercer Wittgenstein” cuyo corpus estaría formado por todas las obras que el filósofo vienés escribió con posterioridad a 1946, incluida la segunda parte de sus Investigaciones filosóficas.
The confrontation with the spirit: Kandinsky and Wittgenstein reveal what moves in great art
When the style Wittgenstein shows in his Philosophical Investigations is analyzed, some authors take it as a mere eccentricity of the Viennese thinker, whilst many others consider it as a consequence derived from the peculiar method used in the Philosophical Investigations for dissolving philosophical problems by describing the way in which we mix and misuse language-games. However, we offer in this work a different perspective of Wittgenstein’s conception of style by analyzing a series of remarks in which he takes the style of his writings as an expression of his own nature: to be precise, the style someone shows when he writes about himself shapes an image of his own and non-transferable natur, which should guide all of his acts. Therefore Wittgenstein thinks this kind of self-knowledge is essential not only to live in a decent way, but also to become a deep philosopher.
Many authors have tried to offer a definition of Wittgenstein’s conception of philosophical problems. In this paper my aim is to show that essentialist tendency is just the opposite of Wittgenstein’s attitude, an attitude based on paying attention to the clarification of misunderstandings concerning the use of words: the term ‘problem’ invites us to think on the corresponding ‘solution’, but far from offering solutions or explanations, Wittgenstein wanted to show a philosophical modus operandi comparable to the task of untying knots
The present paper aims to show how Wittgenstein’s so-called ‘private language argument’ (PLA) affects diverse psychological theories. To this end, it starts by describing the main lines of the PLA and explaining why the idea of a private language constitutes a logical impossibility. Then, it is shown that the psychological theories of Descartes, Locke, Husserl, James, Fodor and Chomsky presuppose the existence of a private language, so that these theories lack internal consistency. Lastly, it is clarified why PLA, far from turning Wittgenstein into a behaviourist, involves a critique of behaviourism.
In this work, we begin by explaining why the term Bild, when we consider Wittgenstein’s later work, should be translated as «image». Through this analysis, we can achieve an optimum perspective to understand the method Wittgenstein used in his Philosophical Investigations: after all, the first step of this method consists just in locating those images that hinder our understanding. Since these images are embedded in our language, it is difficult to locate them, so they usually go unnoticed. This explains why these images have and had a lot of influence not only on the man in the street, but also on many important philosophical systems. The analysis of some images –above all, the image of the Inner which led to Wittgenstein’s remarks on the possibility of a private language– will show us that these images are deep-rooted in our language and, by extension, in ourselves. That is why we find so hard to abandon them, although the analysis of the images in question shows that, if we abandoned them, they would not hold our understanding captive any more
Sin embargo, y basándome en algunas observaciones que antonio machado hizo sobre la creencia en la muerte, mostraré que inclAccording to José Ortega y Gasset, we will only be able to understand a man if we get a clear view of the beliefs that shape his life. Basing myself on some remarks antonio machado made on the belief in death, however, i will show that even the most fund
