    Control mecánico en arbustos exóticos del género Pyracantha bajo tres frecuencias de corte

    El control mecánico se utiliza ampliamente para reducir la invasión de arbustos exóticos; no obstante, en especies que rebrotan, el esfuerzo debe mantenerse hasta que el rebrote sea prácticamente nulo. Un régimen de cortes frecuentes implica un esfuerzo concentrado en menos tiempo, pero debería debilitar a la planta más rápidamente y podría redundar en un menor esfuerzo a largo plazo. En este contexto, nos propusimos determinar la frecuencia de cortes óptima. En las sierras de Córdoba, Argentina, seleccionamos 192 arbustos de Pyracantha angustifolia y P. aff. atalantioides, medimos sus tamaños, los cortamos en la base, aplicamos tres frecuencias de corte del rebrote (anual, bienal y al año 4) y registramos todos los tiempos de corte. Al año 5, la supervivencia fue 36, 83 y 91% para los arbustos cortados anual, bienal y al año 4, espectivamente. La altura promedio precorte fue 323±13 cm, y al año, el rebrote medía casi la mitad en todos los tratamientos. En el tratamiento de cortes anuales, el rebrote fue cada vez menor. En el tratamiento de corte bienal —en los años 2 y 4—, el rebrote alcanzó 84 y 88% de la altura original, espectivamente. En el tratamiento de corte al año 4, el rebrote llegó a una altura de 351±13 cm, superando en 20 cm su altura precorte. El número de frutos para el tratamiento de corte anual y bienal fue 0 y 33 frutos.arbusto-1.año-1, respectivamente, y en el tratamiento de corte al año 4, subió de 0 a 565±85 frutos.arbusto-1.año-1 desde el año 1 al 4. El único tratamiento con una reducción sostenida del tiempo de corte fue el anual.     Standardized incidence ratios and risk factors for cancer in patients with systemic sclerosis: Data from the Spanish Scleroderma Registry (RESCLE)

We analyzed the increased cancer risk among Spanish patients with SSc using standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and identified independent cancer risk factors in this population. Material and methods Spanish Scleroderma Registry data were analyzed to determine the demographic characteristics of patients with SSc, and logistic regression was used to identify cancer risk factors. SIRs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) relative to the general Spanish population were calculated. Results Of 1930 patients with SSc, 206 had cancer, most commonly breast, lung, hematological, and colorectal cancers. Patients with SSc had increased risks of overall cancer (SIR 1.48, 95% CI 1.36–1.60; P < 0.001), and of lung (SIR 2.22, 95% CI 1.77–2.73; P < 0.001), breast (SIR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10–1.54; P = 0.003), and hematological (SIR 2.03, 95% CI 1.52–2.62; P < 0.001) cancers. Cancer was associated with older age at SSc onset (odds ratio [OR] 1.22, 95% CI 1.01–1.03; P < 0.001), the presence of primary biliary cholangitis (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.18–4.68; P = 0.015) and forced vital capacity <70% (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.24–2.70; P = 0.002). The presence of anticentromere antibodies lowered the risk of cancer (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.45–0.97; P = 0.036). Conclusions Spanish patients with SSc had an increased cancer risk compared with the general population.     Influence of ethnicity on the distribution of genetic polymorphisms associated with risk of chronic liver disease in South American populations

    BACKGROUND: The global burden of chronic liver disease is rising. Besides environmental, behavioral, viral and metabolic factors, genetic polymorphisms in patatin-like phospholipase-3 (PNPLA3) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes have been related to the development of chronic liver disease and progression towards liver cancer. Although their prevalence differs remarkably among ethnic groups, the frequency of these polymorphisms in South American populations -whose genetic background is highly admixed- has been poorly studied. Hence, the aim of this study was to characterize polymorphisms related to chronic liver disease and their association with the genetic ancestry of South American populations. RESULTS: DNA samples from 258 healthy unrelated male volunteers were analyzed. The frequencies of G and C alleles of rs738409 polymorphism (PNPLA3 gene) were 74 % and 26 %, respectively; whereas the bAt (CCA) haplotype (VDR gene) was observed in 32.5 % of the samples. The GG genotype of PNPLA3 rs738409 and the bAt (CCA) haplotype -associated with an increased risk of chronic liver disease and progression towards liver cancer- were significantly more frequent among samples exhibiting maternal and paternal Native American haplogroups (63.7 % and 64.6 %), intermediate among admixed samples (45.1 % and 44.9 %; p = 0.03) and the lowest for Non-native American ancestry (30.1 % and 29.6 %; p = 0.001 and p = 0.0008). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that individuals with Native American ancestry might have a high risk of chronic liver disorders and cancer. Furthermore, these data not only support the molecular evaluation of ancestry in multi-ethnic population studies, but also suggest that the characterization of these variants in South American populations may be useful for establishing public health policies aimed at high risk ethnic communities.Fil: Pontoriero, Ana Cecilia.     In Vivo miRNA Decoy Screen Reveals miR-124a as a Suppressor of Melanoma Metastasis

    Melanoma is a highly prevalent cancer with an increasing incidence worldwide and high metastatic potential. Brain metastasis is a major complication of the disease, as more than 50% of metastatic melanoma patients eventually develop intracranial disease. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to play an important role in the tumorigenicity of different cancers and have potential as markers of disease outcome. Identification of relevant miRNAs has generally stemmed from miRNA profiling studies of cells or tissues, but these approaches may have missed miRNAs with relevant functions that are expressed in subfractions of cancer cells. We performed an unbiased in vivo screen to identify miRNAs with potential functions as metastasis suppressors using a lentiviral library of miRNA decoys. Notably, we found that a significant fraction of melanomas that metastasized to the brain carried a decoy for miR-124a, a miRNA that is highly expressed in the brain/neurons. Additional loss- and gain-of-function in vivo validation studies confirmed miR-124a as a suppressor of melanoma metastasis and particularly of brain metastasis. miR-124a overexpression did not inhibit tumor growth in vivo, underscoring that miR-124a specifically controls processes required for melanoma metastatic growth, such as seeding and growth post-extravasation. Finally, we provide proof of principle of this miRNA as a promising therapeutic agent by showing its ability to impair metastatic growth of melanoma cells seeded in distal organs. Our efforts shed light on miR-124a as an antimetastatic agent, which could be leveraged therapeutically to impair metastatic growth and improve patient survival

    Impact of interstitial lung disease on the survival of systemic sclerosis with pulmonary arterial hypertension

    To assess severity markers and outcomes of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) with or without pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH-SSc/non-PAH-SSc), and the impact of interstitial lung disease (ILD) on PAH-SSc. Non-PAH-SSc patients from the Spanish SSc registry and PAH-SSc patients from the Spanish PAH registry were included. A total of 364 PAH-SSc and 1589 non-PAH-SSc patients were included. PAH-SSc patients had worse NYHA-functional class (NYHA-FC), worse forced vital capacity (FVC) (81.2 ± 20.6% vs 93.6 ± 20.6%, P &lt; 0.001), worse tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) (17.4 ± 5.2 mm vs 19.9 ± 6.7 mm, P &lt; 0.001), higher incidence of pericardial effusion (30% vs 5.2%, P &lt; 0.001) and similar prevalence of ILD (41.8% vs. 44.9%). In individuals with PAH-SSc, ILD was associated with worse hemodynamics and pulmonary function tests (PFT). Up-front combination therapy was used in 59.8% and 61.7% of patients with and without ILD, respectively. Five-year transplant-free survival rate was 41.1% in PAH-SSc patients and 93.9% in non-PAH-SSc patients (P &lt; 0.001). Global survival of PAH-SSc patients was not affected by ILD regardless its severity. The multivariate survival analysis in PAH-SSc patients confirmed age at diagnosis, worse NYHA-FC, increased PVR, reduced DLCO, and lower management with up-front combination therapy as major risk factors. In conclusion, in PAH-SSc cohort risk of death was greatly increased by clinical, PFT, and hemodynamic factors, whereas it was decreased by up-front combination therapy. Concomitant ILD worsened hemodynamics and PFT in PAH-SSc but not survival regardless of FVC impairment

    Trabajo de investigación tutelado llevado a cabo en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela.--2008-09-04.--SobresalienteLa búsqueda de una mejor calidad de vida actual y, sobre todo, los temores que se manifiestan en relación con las repercusiones futuras de la degradación del suelo, el agua o el aire, han llevado a un primer plano los estudios dedicados a los problemas ambientales derivados de las actividades agrarias. El paso de una agricultura de cultivos itinerantes que permitía que en los periodos de descanso el suelo recuperara su fertilidad, a otra en la que ya se fijaba de forma permanente la situación de los campos de cultivo, sólo fue posible con la incorporación de materiales fertilizantes al suelo (Carballas et al., 2004). La degradación física, química y/o biológica del suelo es uno de los factores medioambientales que influyen en el mantenimiento de la capacidad productiva de las tierras agrícolas, por lo que para alcanzar una agricultura sostenible es necesaria la conservación de los suelos. La búsqueda de alternativas a la agricultura convencional ha llevado a la adopción de sistemas agrícolas con menor intensidad de laboreo (presencia de residuos de cosecha en la superficie del suelo, rotar cultivos, generar menos problemas de compactación con declives en la producción), factores que promueven la conservación del suelo y que, además, convierten al laboreo de conservación en una de las mejores opciones tecnológicas disponibles para mitigar el cambio climático global, incrementando la fijación de C en el suelo en formas más o menos estables (secuestro de C).Peer reviewe
