Application of an ELISA test using Schistosoma bovis adult worm antigens in travellers and immigrants from a schistosomiasis endemic area and its correlation with clinical findings
[EN] We have recently evaluated an ELISA for the diagnosis of human schistosomiasis using S. bovis adult worm antigens (AWA Sb), showing a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 97% for patients diagnosed by egg detection. Nevertheless, the comparison of this AWA Sb ELISA with direct parasitological findings as the gold standard could introduce a Selection bias, due to the well-known lack of sensitivity of direct methods in the detection of acute schistosomiasis and of low burden infections. The objective of the present work is to compare it with parasitological methods and commercial indirect haemagglutination test using S. mansoni antigens (WA Sm IHA) in 254 immigrants and travellers with different clinical settings; in addition, to find specific bands in the EITB of different phases of schistosomiasis. The AWA Sb ELISA showed 72% of seropositivity in patients with Katayama fever, while patients with eosinophilia and genito-urinary complaints showed 27% and 93%, respectively. The diagnosis yield was globally higher than direct egg detection or WA Sm IHA test with regard to the clinical setting. Finally, the utilization of EITB with S. bovis AWA permits the confirmation of diagnosis in chronic and acute phases of the disease
Abasy Atlas: a comprehensive inventory of systems, global network properties and systems-level elements across bacteria
Ibarra-Arellano MA, Campos-Gonzalez AI, Trevino-Quintanilla LG, Tauch A, Freyre-Gonzalez JA. Abasy Atlas: a comprehensive inventory of systems, global network properties and systems-level elements across bacteria. DATABASE-THE JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL DATABASES AND CURATION. 2016;2016: baw089.The availability of databases electronically encoding curated regulatory networks and of high-throughput technologies and methods to discover regulatory interactions provides an invaluable source of data to understand the principles underpinning the organization and evolution of these networks responsible for cellular regulation. Nevertheless, data on these sources never goes beyond the regulon level despite the fact that regulatory networks are complex hierarchical-modular structures still challenging our understanding. This brings the necessity for an inventory of systems across a large range of organisms, a key step to rendering feasible comparative systems biology approaches. In this work, we take the first step towards a global understanding of the regulatory networks organization by making a cartography of the functional architectures of diverse bacteria. Abasy (Across-bacteria systems) Atlas provides a comprehensive inventory of annotated functional systems, global network properties and systems-level elements (global regulators, modular genes shaping functional systems, basal machinery genes and intermodular genes) predicted by the natural decomposition approach for reconstructed and meta-curated regulatory networks across a large range of bacteria, including pathogenically and biotechnologically relevant organisms. The meta-curation of regulatory datasets provides the most complete and reliable set of regulatory interactions currently available, which can even be projected into subsets by considering the force or weight of evidence supporting them or the systems that they belong to. Besides, Abasy Atlas provides data enabling large-scale comparative systems biology studies aimed at understanding the common principles and particular lifestyle adaptions of systems across bacteria. Abasy Atlas contains systems and system-level elements for 50 regulatory networks comprising 78 649 regulatory interactions covering 42 bacteria in nine taxa, containing 3708 regulons and 1776 systems. All this brings together a large corpus of data that will surely inspire studies to generate hypothesis regarding the principles governing the evolution and organization of systems and the functional architectures controlling them
Triazole-Containing [FeFe] Hydrogenase Mimics: Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Behavior
Item en revisión. Pendiente de cumplimentar metadatos.Through a Cu-catalyzed Huisgen cycloaddition between terminal alkynes and azides (CuAAC) reaction, azide [(μ-SCH2)2N(4- N3C6H4)Fe2(CO)6] has demonstrated to be a robust and versatile reagent able to incorporate the [(μ-SR)2Fe2(CO)6] fragment on a wide range of substrates, ranging from aromatic compounds to nucleosides, metallocenes, or redox and luminescent markers. The [FeIFeI]/[Fe0FeI] and [Fe0FeI]/[Fe0Fe0] reduction potentials of the triazole derivatives prepared are comparable to those of other aminodithiolate (adt) Fe−Fe hydrogenase mimics. The presence of the triazole linker influences the electrochemical behavior of these complexes depending on the strength of the acid employed
Levulinic to succinic acid transformation over Ru based catalysts
In this work ruthenium based catalysts are tested as catalytic systems for the selective oxidation of levulinic to succinic acid. Very different in nature supports have been chosen in order to elucidate the effect of their textural and acidic properties on the final catalytic activity. The influence of Ru particle size is also discussed and proposed as one of the key factors. Medium range ruthenium particles supported on relatively acid supports are the best performing systems in terms of succinic acid yield, while the most active catalysts in terms of conversion result in important carbon loss due to reagent/products full oxidation.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). Multicomponent Ni-CeO2 nanocatalysts for syngas production from CO2/CH4 mixtures
The dry reforming of methane with CO2 is a common route to transform CO2/CH4 mixtures into added value syngas. Ni based catalysts are highly active for this goal but suffer from deactivation, as such promoters need to be introduced to counteract this, and improve performance. In this study, mono- and bi-metallic formulations based on 10 wt.% Ni/CeO2-Al2O3 are explored and compared to a reference 10 wt.% Ni/γ-Al2O3. The effect of Sn and Pt as promoters of Ni/CeO2-Al2O3 was also investigated. The formulation promoted with Sn looked especially promising, showing CO2 conversions stabilising at 65% after highs of 95%. Its increased performance is attributed to the additional dispersion Sn promotion causes. Changes in the reaction conditions (space velocity and temperature) cement this idea, with the Ni-Sn/CeAl material performing superiorly to the mono-metallic material, showing less deactivation. However, in the long run it is noted that the mono-metallic Ni/CeAl performs better. As such the application is key when deciding which catalyst to employ in the dry reforming process.EPSRC under the projects EP/R512904/1 and EP/K036548/2Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (ENE2015-66975- C3-2-R) co-financed by FEDER funds from the European UnionJunta de Andalucía (TEP-8196) co-financed by FEDER funds from the European Unio
Diversity and effective population size of four horse breeds from micro satellite DNA markers in South-Central Mexico
This study assesses genetic diversity and population structure of Quarter Horse, Azteca, Thoroughbred and Creole horses, frequently used for horse dancing competitions in traditional regional festivities. Since most animals in the studied area are used as breeders, the results support the improvement of management strategies, including periodical assessment of these populations to ensure acceptable population sizes and breed integrity, and documenting genetic flow and reproductive management. The South-Central region of Mexico has experienced a sizeable introduction of purebred horses for recreational aims. A study was designed to assess effective population sizes and genetic diversity and to verify the genetic integrity of four horse breeds. Using a 12-microsatellite panel, Quarter Horse, Azteca, Thoroughbred and Creole (CRL) horses were sampled and analysed for diversity and genetic structure. Genetic diversity parameters showed high numbers of heterozygous horses but small effective population sizes in all breeds. Population structure results suggested some degree of admixture of CRL with the other reference breeds. The highly informative microsatellite panel allowed the verification of diversity in introduced horse populations and the confirmation of small effective population sizes, which suggests a risk for future breed integrity
