This study was performed in order to micropropagate the critically endangered Balkan endemic Dianthus ingoldbyi and to investigate the anatomical and morphological characteristic of shoots following the slowing down of the growth of in vitro shoots under cold and dark conditions. For this purpose, axillary buds isolated from aseptic seedlings were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium including 1mg/L Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.3mg/L Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and a regeneration ratio of 84.8% was obtained. The number of shoots per explant was 5.9 after 30 days from culture initial and the mean shoot length was 3.6cm. These shoots were transferred to MS medium including 0.5mg/L NAA and stored at 4 oC in a refrigerator in total darkness for 1-6 months without subculturing. 58% of shoots survived after 6 months of cold storage conditions. Growth of shoots was significantly slowed down and there was no anatomical or morphological deformation at the end of the experimental period. Shoots transferred to normal conditions from cold storage developed better than the control group. Well rooted plants were acclimatized to outdoor conditions with a survival rate of 48%. In conclusion, the cold storage technique used in this study is suggested as an effective method for in vitro conservation of the critically endangered D. ingoldbyi.Bu çalışma kritik biçimde tehlike altındaki Balkan endemiği Dianthus ingoldbyi’nin mikroçoğaltımı ve düşük sıcaklık ve karanlık koşullar altında in vitro sürgünlerin büyümesinin yavaşlatılmasını takiben sürgünlerin anatomik ve morfolojik karakterlerinin incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu amaçla, aseptik fidelerden elde edilen aksillar tomurcuklar 1mg/L Benzilaminopürin (BAP) ve 0,3mg/L Naftalen asetik asit (NAA) içeren Murashige and Skoog (MS) besi yerinde kültüre alınarak %84,8 oranında rejenerasyon elde edilmiştir. Kültürün 30. gününde eksplant başına sürgün oranı 5,9 iken ortalama sürgün uzunluğu 3,6cm olmuştur. Bu sürgünler 0,5mg/L NAA içeren MS besi yerine aktarılarak buzdolabında sürekli karanlık koşullarda ve 4oC sıcaklıkta alt kültüre almaksızın 1-6 ay süresince depolanmıştır. Soğukta depolamanın 6. ayı sonunda sürgünlerin %58’i hayatta kalmıştır. Deneylerin sonunda hayatta kalan sürgünlerin büyümesinin anlamlı düzeyde yavaşladığı, anatomik ve morfolojik açıdan herhangi bir deformasyonun bulunmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Soğukta depolamadan normal koşullara aktarılan sürgünler kontrol grubundan daha iyi gelişmişlerdir. İyice köklenen fidelerin %48’i başarılı biçimde dış koşullara şaşırtılmıştır. Sonuç olarak bu çalışmada kullanılan soğukta depolama tekniğinin kritik tehlikedeki D. ingoldbyi’nin in vitro korunmasında etkili bir metot olduğu öne sürülmektedi

The association of left atrial mechanics with left ventricular morphology in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A cardiac magnetic resonance study

Purpose: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is related with structural and pathologic changes in the left atrium (LA) and left ventricle (LV). The aim of this study was to explore the association between LA mechanics and LV charac-teristics in patients with HCM using cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT). Material and methods: A total of 76 patients with HCM and 26 healthy controls were included in the study. The pa-rameters including the extent of LV late gadolinium enhancement (LGE-%) and the LV early diastolic longitudinal strain rate (edLSR) were assessed for LV. LA conduit, booster, and reservoir functions were assessed by LA fractional volumes and strain analyses using CMR-FT. HCM patients were classified as HCM patients without LGE, with mild LGE-% (0% = 10%), and prominent LGE-% (10% < LGE-%).Results: HCM patients had worse LA functions compared with the controls (p < 0.05). The majority of LA functional indices were more impaired in HCM patients with regard to LGE. LA volumes were higher in HCM patients with prominent LGE-% compared with HCM patients with mild LGE-% (p < 0.05). However, only a minority of LA functional parameters differed between the 2 groups. LA strain parameters showed weak to modest correlations with LV LGE-% and LV edLSR.Conclusions: LV characteristics, to some extent, influence LA mechanics, but they might not be the only factor induc-ing LA dysfunction in patients with HCM

The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) has significantly increased all over the world. Recent studies have shown that Turkey has quite a high prevalence. The aim of this study is to estimate prevalence in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions of Turkey and to compare the results. This study was designed as a door to door survey in 3 cities. One is located in the Mediterranean region (South), 2 are located in the Black Sea region (North). A previous validated form was used for screening in the field. The patients were examined first in the field, then in the regional health facility. McDonald criteria were used for the diagnosis. In total, 26 patients were diagnosed with MS. The prevalence was found to be 18.6/100,000 in Artvin (Black Sea region), 55.5/100,000 in Ordu, (Black Sea region), 52.00/100,000 in Gazipasa (Mediterranean region). The female/male ratio was 2.25. This study is the first prevalence study which was conducted in the Mediterranean City (South) of Turkey. The prevalence rate was found to be higher than expected in the Mediterranean city of Gazipasa. The results showed that the prevalence varies from region to region. Latitude difference was not observed

In this study, current distribution, population status and the threats on the habitat of the endemic and endangered species Bellevalia edirnensis were investigated. The findings indicated that overgrazing, agricultural activities, construction and water and soil pollution were the major threatened factors on the habitat of this critically endangered (CR) species. In situ and ex situ conservation strategies were presented and discussed. It is suggested that B. edirnensis is prone to extinction in nature in near future unless an effectiveconservation strategy is established as soon as possibl

Further development of polyepichlorohydrin based anion exchange membranes for reverse electrodialysis by tuning cast solution properties

Recently, there have been several studies done regarding anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on polyepichlorohydrin (PECH), an attractive polymer enabling safe membrane fabrication due to its inherent chloromethyl groups. However, there are still undiscovered properties of these membranes emerging from different compositions of cast solutions. Thus, it is vital to explore new membrane properties for sustainable energy generation by reverse electrodialysis (RED). In this study, the cast solution composition was easily tuned by varying the ratio of active polymer (i.e., blend ratio) and quaternary agent (i.e., excess diamine ratio) in the range of 1.07–2.00, and 1.00–4.00, respectively. The membrane synthesized with excess diamine ratio of 4.00 and blend ratio of 1.07 provided the best results in terms of ion exchange capacity, 3.47 mmol/g, with satisfactory conductive properties (area resistance: 2.4 Ω·cm2, electrical conductivity: 6.44 mS/cm) and high hydrophilicity. RED tests were performed by AEMs coupled with the commercially available Neosepta CMX cation exchange membrane (CEMs).This research was funded by TÜBİTAK through Concert Japan project, grant number 118M804
