    Trophic Comparison of Two Species of Needlefish (Belonidae) in the Alvarado Lagoonal System, Veracruz, Mexico

    We compared the diets of Atlantic needlefish, Strongylura marina, and redfin needlefish, Strongylura notata, in the Alvarado lagoonal system, Veracruz, Mexico, and analyzed diet breadth and trophic overlap between the species. All fishes were collected monthly from June 2000 to July 2001 at twelve sampling stations. A total of 74 intestinal tracts from S. marina were analyzed. The diet of S. marina consisted of 25 prey types with fish being the dominate prey. In eighty-nine digestive tracts examined from S. notata, the diet consisted of 29 prey types with the dominant prey including fishes, penaeid shrimp, polychaetes, and hymenopteran insects. There was moderate diet overlap (α = 0.4903) between S. marina and S. notata in the rainy season, while there was little diet overlap between species during the “nortes” (α = 0.1037) or dry (α = 0.1675) season. There was reduced niche breadth in both S. marina and S. notata during the “nortes” (BA = 0.175 and 0.105, respectively) and dry (BA = 0.128 and 0.173, respectively) seasons, with niche breadth values being higher for both species during the rainy season (BA = 0.254 and 0.296, respectively)

    Los peces como indicador de restauración de áreas de manglar en la costa norte de Yucatán

    ResumenLos manglares son reconocidos por los servicios ecológicos que proveen a muchas especies de peces. Estudios previos sobre restauración ecológica han pasado por alto estas funciones, generalmente enfocándose a la restauración de cobertura vegetal. El objetivo fue determinar las funciones de los manglares como zonas de refugio y alimentación para peces, evaluando la composición y abundancia en sitios con diferente tiempo de restauración. Se realizaron 2 muestreos en 4 sitios de manglar en restauración en Yucatán —Celestún 1, Celestún 2, Yucalpetén, Progreso—, en donde se registraron 22 especies de peces. Celestún 2 fue el sitio con mayor riqueza y diversidad (Gambusia yucatana, Poecilia velifera, Mugil cephalus y Anchoa mitchilli las más abundantes). Progreso registró la diversidad más baja y alta dominancia de G. yucatana (>90%). El sitio con mayor tiempo de restauración presentó organismos juveniles detritófagos y zoobentófagos. Los resultados demuestran la función del manglar como zona de crianza y alimentación para especies marinas que intervienen en la transferencia de energía y nutrientes con sistemas adyacentes, también demuestran gran dominancia de G. yucatana, una especie endémica y característica del ecosistema de manglar en Yucatán.AbstractMangroves are well recognized for the ecological services that they provide to many fish species. Previous studies on ecological restoration have overlooked these ecological functions, as they are generally focused on the restoration of vegetation cover. The objective of this study is to determine the function of mangroves as nursery and feeding grounds for fishes, by assessing the species composition and abundance in sites with different restoration time. Two samplings were performed in 4 sites where mangrove is recovering along the Yucatán coast —Celestún 1, Celestún 2, Yucalpetén, Progreso—. A total of 22 fish species were recorded, the higher richness and diversity were recorded in Celestún 2 (Gambusia yucatana, Poecilia velifera, Mugil cephalus and Anchoa mitchilli were the most abundant). In Progreso, the diversity was lower due to the dominance of G. yucatana (>90%). The site with the longest restoration time presented juveniles of detritophagous and zoobentophagous species, which show the nursery and feeding functions of the area. These marine species are involved in the transfer of energy and nutrients to adjacent systems, also a great dominance of G. yucatana was found, which is an endemic and characteristic fish species from the mangrove ecosystem in Yucatán

    Many species of marine fish use coastal lagoons during early stages of their life cycles due to the protection provided by their turbid waters and complex structure of the environment, such as mangroves and mudflats, and the availability of food derived from the high productivity of these sites. In this study, we analyzed the diet of six species of juvenile marine fishes that use a karstic lagoon system in the northwest portion of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Through stomach contents analysis we determined the trophic differences among Caranx latus, Oligoplites saurus, Trachinotus falcatus, Synodus foetens, Lutjanus griseus, and Strongylura notata. C. latus, O. saurus, S. foetens, and S. notate, which are ichthyophagous species (>80% by number). L. griseus feeds mainly on crustaceans (>55%) and fish (35%), while T. falcatus feeds on mollusks (>50% bivalves, >35% gastropods). The analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) showed differences in the diet of all species. Cluster analysis, based on the Bray-Curtis similarity matrix revealed three groups; one characterized by the ichthyophagous guild (S. notata, S. foetens, C. latus, and O. saurus), other group formed by the crustacean consumers (L. griseus), and the third, composed by the mollusk feeder (T. falcatus). Species of the ichthyophagous guild showed overlap in their diets, which under conditions of low prey abundance may trigger competition, hence affecting juvenile stages of these marine species that use coastal lagoons to feed and grow

    Coastal lagoons are important systems for freshwater, estuarine and marine organisms; they are considered important zones of reproduction, nursery and feeding for many fish species. The present study investigates the fish assemblages of the natural reserve of Dzilam and their relationship with the hydrologic variables. A total of 6 474 individuals (81 species) were collected, contributing with more than 50% considering the Importance Value Index (IVI), Sphoeroides testudineus, Fundulus persimilis, Anchoa mitchilli, Eucinostomus gula, Eucinostomus argenteus and Mugil trichodon. Differences in species composition were found between seasons the highest during the cold fronts. Spatially, differences were related with the presence of freshwater seeps, the highest in the ecological characterized eastern part and the lowest with higher difference in specific composition located in the western part of the internal zone, due to a higher abundance and dominance of L. rhomboides. Salinity and temperature were the variables that presented a higher influence in the distribution of some pelagic species such as A. mitchilli and A. hepsetus. Because of the abundant freshwater seeps characteristic of the coastal lagoons of Yucatan Peninsula their community structure and fish assemblage display spatial and temporal differences in specific composition.     Las lagunas costeras son sistemas dominados por la variabilidad ambiental ocasionada por ciclos estacionales o nictémeros, lo cual influye directamente en la composición de especies como la de los peces. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la variación en la composición de la comunidad de peces a 2 escalas temporales y analizar la dieta de especies marinas que utilizan la laguna en alguna etapa de su ciclo de vida. El estudio se realizó en la laguna Carbonera en la costa norte de Yucatán, México. Se recolectaron peces cada 2 h con un chinchorro playero durante un ciclo de 24 h, en campañas bimestrales de diciembre de 2010 a octubre de 2011. Las variables hidrológicas registradas y la comunidad de peces se evaluaron a escala nictémera y estacional, y se observaron cambios significativos en la temperatura y la salinidad. La riqueza específica y la diversidad de peces fueron mayores durante la noche, cuando se registraron especies marinas como los armados (Orthopristis chrysoptera), las corvinas (Bairdiella chrysoura), las mojarras (Eugerres plumieri) y los roncos (Haemulon plumierii). La mayor abundancia se obtuvo durante las horas de luz debido a la presencia de cardúmenes de juveniles de sardina (Harengula clupeola) y especies residentes (Floridichthys polyommus y Fundulus persimilis). Se analizó la alimentación de 10 especies de peces marinos en estadio juvenil, y se identificaron 4 principales gremios tróficos (piscívoros, detritívoros, malacófagos y zoobentófagos). Las especies marinas en estadio juvenil de importancia comercial que utilizan la laguna Carbonera para alimentación son las lisas, las sardinas y los roncos. Por lo tanto, este sistema brinda recursos a juveniles de especies de gran importancia para la pesca artesanal, por lo que es de suma importancia elaborar estrategias de manejo para su protección y conservación

    Se evaluó la abundancia y recambio de las especies ícticas que habitan en la laguna de Celestún en función de los ciclos de luz y oscuridad y del tipo de hábitats. Para ello se realizaron 6 muestreos bimestrales en una red de 4 estaciones; 2 localizadas en la boca y 2 en la zona interna de la laguna. Los sitios de cada zona comprenden un fondo con vegetación acuática y otro sin ésta (VAS, FSV). En cada sitio se registraron parámetros hidrológicos para determinar su relación con la estructura de la comunidad. Los peces se recolectaron con un chinchorro (15 × 1.5 m, 2.5cm luz de malla) en un periodo diurno (10:00-3:00), crepuscular (18:00-21:00) y nocturno (02:00-05:00). Para su análisis se utilizaron diferentes estadísticos multivariados no parámetricos (NPMANOVA, NMDS, betadisper). Se encontraron diferencias en composición de especies de peces entre hábitats con VAS y FSV (F=2.6108, p=0.0114). La tasa de recambio de especies es baja entre hábitats y entre ciclos de luz-oscuridad. Los ensamblajes de peces entre hábitats son más dinámicos que nictimeralmente, debido a que las praderas de vegetación sumergida soportan un mayor número de especies por su función en la alimentación y/o como protección.<br>The abundance and turnover of fish species inhabiting Celestún lagoon were evaluated according to day-night cycles, as well as habitat type. Bimonthly sampling was done at 4 sites of the lagoon, 2 at the mouth and 2 at the inner zone. The sites for each zone include bottoms with and without submerged aquatic vegetation (VAS, FSV). At each site hydrologic parameters were registered to determine their relationship with fish community structure. Fish specimens were collected using a beach seine (15 ×1.5 m, 2.5cm mesh) at day (10:00-13:00), twilight (18:00-21:00) and night (02:00-05:00). Multivariate non-parametric (NPMANOVA, NMDS, betadisper) statistics were used for the analysis. Difference in fish species were found between habitats with VAS and FSV (F=2.6108, p=0.0114). The betadisper test indicated that species rate of replacement is low between habitats and during day-night cycles. Fish assemblages between habitats are more dynamic than day-night cycles, due to seagrass meadows that host great numbers of species providing protection and food availability

    Spatiotemporal Variability in Fish Assemblages in a Coastal and Estuarine System in the Tropical Eastern Pacific during the Anthropause

    Differences in fish assemblages’ composition and their relationship with the environmental variables were analyzed in the Urías estuarine system, Mexican North Pacific. Environmental variables and fish catches were recorded bimonthly between June 2018 and November 2021, including a period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multivariate analyses were performed in the studied area to define zones based on their environmental, biotic, and abiotic characteristics and the effect of these on the fish assemblages. Two zones were identified, an estuarine with mangrove forest and a surf zone in the coastal area outside the estuarine system. Fish composition, biomass, and diversity (α and β) were evaluated among the factors of the period (before–during COVID-19), climatic seasons, and zones. A total of 5947 fish individuals of 41 species were collected using beach seines as fishing gear. The structure of the fish assemblages was different between zones and periods. Abiotic (temperature, salinity, and total matter suspended), biotic (mangrove area), and temporal (season and period before–during COVID-19) variables had an effect on fish biomass and α diversity, while the results of the β diversity only indicate changes in the nestedness component before–during the lockdown. These results indicate a change in fish assemblages’ structure and composition between periods, which might be a consequence of the limitation of human activities derived from the pandemic, climatic changes, or a combination of both effects. Our results show that fish assemblages in the estuarine systems of the Tropical Eastern Pacific are unique, and there is a need to establish local management strategies for these ecosystems
