The galactic unclassified B[e] star HD 50138. I. A possible new shell phase

The observed spectral variation of HD 50138 has led different authors to classify it in a very wide range of spectral types and luminosity classes (from B5 to A0 and III to Ia) and at different evolutionary stages as either HAeBe star or classical Be. Aims: Based on new high-resolution optical spectroscopic data from 1999 and 2007 associated to a photometric analysis, the aim of this work is to provide a deep spectroscopic description and a new set of parameters for this unclassified southern B[e] star and its interstellar extinction. Methods: From our high-resolution optical spectroscopic data separated by 8 years, we perform a detailed spectral description, presenting the variations seen and discussing their possible origin. We derive the interstellar extinction to HD 50138 by taking the influences of the circumstellar matter in the form of dust and an ionized disk into account. Based on photometric data from the literature and the new Hipparcos distance, we obtain a revised set of parameters for HD 50138. Results: Because of the spectral changes, we tentatively suggest that a new shell phase could have taken place prior to our observations in 2007. We find a color excess value of E(B-V) = 0.08 mag, and from the photometric analysis, we suggest that HD 50138 is a B6-7 III-V star. A discussion of the different evolutionary scenarios is also provided.Comment: Paper accepted for publication in A&A main journal (12 pages, 16 figures and a 3 pages-table).

Ensemble of 6 DoF Pose estimation from state-of-the-art deep methods.

Deep learning methods have revolutionized computer vision since the appearance of AlexNet in 2012. Nevertheless, 6 degrees of freedom pose estimation is still a difficult task to perform precisely. Therefore, we propose 2 ensemble techniques to refine poses from different deep learning 6DoF pose estimation models. The first technique, merge ensemble, combines the outputs of the base models geometrically. In the second, stacked generalization, a machine learning model is trained using the outputs of the base models and outputs the refined pose. The merge method improves the performance of the base models on LMO and YCB-V datasets and performs better on the pose estimation task than the stacking strategy. This paper has been supported by the project PROFLOW under the Basque program ELKARTEK, grant agreement No. KK-2022/00024

The Need for Standardized Assessment of Muscle Quality in Skeletal Muscle Function Deficit and Other Aging-Related Muscle Dysfunctions: A Symposium Report

    Get PDF
A growing body of scientific literature suggests that not only changes in skeletal muscle mass, but also other factors underpinning muscle quality, play a role in the decline in skeletal muscle function and impaired mobility associated with aging. A symposium on muscle quality and the need for standardized assessment was held on April 28, 2016 at the International Conference on Frailty and Sarcopenia Research in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this symposium was to provide a venue for basic science and clinical researchers and expert clinicians to discuss muscle quality in the context of skeletal muscle function deficit and other aging-related muscle dysfunctions. The present article provides an expanded introduction concerning the emerging definitions of muscle quality and a potential framework for scientific inquiry within the field. Changes in muscle tissue composition, based on excessive levels of inter- and intra-muscular adipose tissue and intramyocellular lipids, have been found to adversely impact metabolism and peak force generation. However, methods to easily and rapidly assess muscle tissue composition in multiple clinical settings and with minimal patient burden are needed. Diagnostic ultrasound and other assessment methods continue to be developed for characterizing muscle pathology, and enhanced sonography using sensors to provide user feedback and improve reliability is currently the subject of ongoing investigation and development. In addition, measures of relative muscle force such as specific force or grip strength adjusted for body size have been proposed as methods to assess changes in muscle quality. Furthermore, performance-based assessments of muscle power via timed tests of function and body size estimates, are associated with lower extremity muscle strength may be responsive to age-related changes in muscle quality. Future aims include reaching consensus on the definition and standardized assessments of muscle quality, and providing recommendations to address critical clinical and technology research gaps within the field

Toxic degree evaluation for fish farming in Pernambuco (Brasil) / Avaliação da toxicidade de piscicultura do semiárido de Pernambuco (Brasil)

The São Francisco Sub-Middle excerpt is considered favorable for fish farming region. Despite the economic and social importance of this activity, the use of antibiotics, hormones for reversal of fingerlings and the nitrogen and phosphate addition through the feed, represent potentially generating sources of environmental impacts. Ecotoxicological studies associated with physicochemical and biological assessments provide information about the wastewater of fish farming and its impacts, contributing to the formulation of public policies for monitoring wastewater released in water bodies. Ahead this, the present study was carried out on an excaved tank fish farming with Oreochromis niloticus cultivation in Pernambuco (Brazil), in the semi-arid region. Ecotoxicological parameters were evaluated, physico-chemical and biological agents on six sampling points. The results showed that when comparing the data points in the wastewater before and after the treatment by phytoremediation it is observed that there was a values decrease for the physical and chemical parameters, with high rate of dissolved oxygen. However, for the biological variables there was registered an increase in, calling attention to Itaparica reservoir, with cyanobacteria densities above the limit permitted by CONAMA Resolution 357/05. Since many of these parameters indicate eutrophication and may interfere with the water and in fish quality. Water and wastewater from fish farming in excavated tank, as well as oxytetracycline antibiotic, not accounted for toxicity for microcrustaceous Daphnia similis and Danio rerio fish used in ecotoxicological tests. However, sublethal effects observed in D. rerio call attention to the impacts continued in a long-term exposure. The 17?-methyltestosterone hormone caused acute toxicity to D. similis and D. rerio, showing direct impact on the aquatic ecosystem. The results emphasize the need to monitor the ecotoxicological effects of fish farming activity and its impacts on water resources, as well as the regulation of pharmaceutical products used in crops

Housing policy in transition?: an analysis of two policies permeated by participation

One of the most frequently criticized aspects of traditional models of housing policy is the lack of consideration given to the issue of citizen participation, particularly on the part of low-income groups most affected by housing problems, which is often seen as a factor that limits the effectiveness of these policies and their adequacy in resolving existing housing needs. This issue has been taken up as a demand on the part of social organizations working on issues of housing rights, and in recent years has begun to influence the decisions of policy makers. These demands increasingly shape housing policies, which in some cases create novel mechanisms for incorporating the participation of social organizations that represent the target populations. This article looks at two recent policies that share this characteristic: Law 14449 for the Just Access to Habitat (Province of Buenos Aires), and the experience of the National Registry of Popular Neighborhoods and the subsequent National Law No. 27453. The analysis of these cases will make it possible to raise questions regarding the possibility of an emerging transition toward a model of housing policy management that contemplates the participation of social organizations as a central aspect.Fil: Palumbo, Joseph Anthony.
