    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time, and attempts to address it require a clear understanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space. While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes, vast areas of the tropics remain understudied. In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world's most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity, but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepresented in biodiversity databases. To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications may eliminate pieces of the Amazon's biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological communities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge, it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple organism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region's vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most neglected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status, much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lost

    Use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing to assess early ventilatory changes related to occupational particulate matter

    <div><p>Spirometry has been used as the main strategy for assessing ventilatory changes related to occupational exposure to particulate matter (OEPM). However, in some cases, as one of its limitations, it may not be sensitive enough to show abnormalities before extensive damage, as seen in restrictive lung diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) may be better than spirometry to detect early ventilatory impairment caused by OEPM. We selected 135 male workers with at least one year of exposure. After collection of self-reported socioeconomic status, educational level, and cardiovascular risk data, participants underwent spirometry, CPET, body composition assessment (bioelectrical impedance), and triaxial accelerometry (for level of physical activity in daily life). CPET was performed using a ramp protocol on a treadmill. Metabolic, cardiovascular, ventilatory, and submaximal relationships were measured. We compared 52 exposed to 83 non-exposed workers. Multiple linear regressions were developed using spirometry and CPET variables as outcomes and OEPM as the main predictor, and adjusted by the main covariates. Our results showed that OEPM was associated with significant reductions in peak minute ventilation, peak tidal volume, and breathing reserve index. Exposed participants presented shallower slope of ΔVT/ΔlnV̇E (breathing pattern), i.e., increased tachypneic breathing pattern. The OEPM explained 7.4% of the ΔVT/ΔlnV̇E variability. We found no significant influence of spirometric indices after multiple linear regressions. We conclude that CPET might be a more sensitive feature of assessing early pulmonary impairment related to OEPM. Our cross-sectional results suggested that CPET is a promising tool for the screening of asymptomatic male workers.</p></div

    Detecção de Toxoplasma gondii no sĂȘmen de ovinos naturalmente infectados

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a eliminação de Toxoplasma gondii no sĂȘmen de carneiros naturalmente infectados. Foram utilizados 65 reprodutores submetidos inicialmente Ă  pesquisa de anticorpos anti-T. gondii por meio da tĂ©cnica de imunofluorescĂȘncia indireta (IFI). Os carneiros sorologicamente positivos foram submetidos Ă  colheita de sĂȘmen para detecção do DNA de T. gondii. Na sorologia observaram-se 6/65 (9,2%) carneiros positivos, enquanto no PCR nested de sĂȘmen 4/6 (66,6%) carneiros foram positivos. Conclui-se que a detecção, por meio da tĂ©cnica da PCR nested, da forma proliferativa de T. gondii no sĂȘmen de carneiros naturalmente infectados, reforça a necessidade de se pesquisar sobre a possibilidade da transmissĂŁo horizontal do parasito via sĂȘmen na espĂ©cie ovina
