    Thermal Stress Distribution in the Drum Brake of a Small Vehicle

    ABSTRACT In this project, the approach of finite element analysis is used to evaluate the thermal stress distribution in the brake drum of a small car. During braking, the kinetic energies of a moving vehicle are converted into thermal energy through frictions in the brakes. Excessive thermal stress may cause undesirable effect on the material of the brake drum that eventually leads to initiation of crack. For the optimized design of a brake drum, it does appear to be very important to examine the thermal stress distribution in the brake drum at different thickness of drum’s wall

    History Teacher Readiness in Applying Historical Thinking Skills in Secondary School

    This article aims to study on the readiness of history teachers to inculcate historical thinking skills among students. This study focused on four aspects which includes 1) Procedural Knowledge, and 2) Pedagogical Knowledge. Thus, to achieve the purpose of the study, quantitative methods are used. Questionnaires were distributed to 30 history teachers in a secondary school in Batu Pahat district. The results showed that there were no significant differences between teachers who were trained to teach History and those who are not. However, there was a significant difference between teachers with ten years of teaching experience with the readiness of history teachers

    Vision-Based Tactile Paving Detection Method in Navigation Systems for Visually Impaired Persons

    In general, a visually impaired person relies on guide canes in order to walk outside besides depending only on a tactile pavement as a warning and directional tool in order to avoid any obstructions or hazardous situations. However, still a lot of training is needed in order to recognize the tactile pattern, and it is quite difficult for persons who have recently become visually impaired. This chapter describes the development and evaluation of vision-based tactile paving detection method for visually impaired persons. Some experiments will be conducted on how it works to detect the tactile pavement and identify the shape of tactile pattern. In this experiment, a vision-based method is proposed by using MATLAB including the Arduino platform and speaker as guidance tools. The output of this system based on the result found from tactile detection in MATLAB then produces auditory output and notifies the visually impaired about the type of tactile detected. Consequently, the development of tactile pavement detection system can be used by visually impaired persons for easy detection and navigation purposes

    Evaluating the Effect of Crowd Design, Information and Management on Crowd Safety in KL Car- in Free Morning Sporting Events

    The KL Car-Free Morning event in Kuala Lumpur is a popular sporting event promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. It occurs every Sunday and involves closing streets for activities like cycling, running, and walking. With the growing number of participants, safety concerns have emerged, necessitating proper planning and safety measures. Event design includes street closures, accessible route design, safety measures, varied activities, evaluation and monitoring, and community engagement. The purpose of these studies is to investigate the effect of crowd design, information, and management on crowd safety in KL Car-Free Morning Sporting Events. A quantitative method was used research as a research design and a survey method was for data collected. The population of this study are all the participants that join this event either from running, cycling, walking, rollerblading, or skateboarding activities. SPSS was used as a tool for data analysis. The findings of this study present that crowd design and management significantly affect crowd safety and crowd information does not significantly affect crowd safety. This study is important for the event organizer to understand the factors that will affect the safety of the participants

    Rubber-Tree Leaf Diseases Mapping Using Close Range Remote Sensing Images

     Currently, close-range remote sensing method using drone-based platform which payload compact sensor has been used for monitoring and mapping in the agriculture sector at large area. Thus, this study is deployed drone with a compact sensor to identify the rubber tree leaf diseases based on two groups of a spectral wavelength which are visible (RGB: 0.4 µm – 0.7 µm) and near infrared (NIR: 0.7µm – 2.0 µm), respectively. Spectral obtained from drone-based platform will be validated using ground observation handheld spectroradiometer. Eight types of rubber tree clones leaf at three different conditions (healthy, unhealthy and severe) were randomly selected within the 9.4-hectare Experimental Rubber Plot, Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM), Kota Tinggi, Johor whereby consist RRIM 2000 series, RRIM 3000 series, and PB series, respectively. Based on the result, quantitative analysis shows that the f-value is smaller than Critical-one tail for healthy, unhealthy while for severe the f-value is larger than Critical-one tail. The f-value is 2.887 < 4.283 (healthy), 0.002 < 0.264 (unhealthy) and 1.008 > 0.0526, respectively. Thus, this can be concluded that spectral and estimate is equal at the 0.05 significant levels. For qualitative analysis, it shows that each rubber clone tree diseases can be distinguished at the near infrared band for healthy, unhealthy and severe respectively

    A community-based prospective cohort study of dengue viral infection in Malaysia: the study protocol

In recent decades, Malaysia has become a dengue hyper-endemic country with the co-circulation of the four dengue virus serotypes. The cyclical dominance of sub-types contributes to a pattern of major outbreaks. The consequences can be observed in the rising incidence of reported dengue cases and dengue related deaths. Understanding the complex interaction of the dengue virus, its human hosts and the mosquito vectors at the community level may help develop strategies for addressing the problem. Methods A prospective cohort study will be conducted in Segamat district of Johor State in Peninsular Malaysia. Researchers received approval from the Malaysian Medical Research Ethics Committee and Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee. The study will be conducted at a Malaysian based health and demographic surveillance site over a 1 year period in three different settings (urban, semi-urban and rural). The study will recruit healthy adults (male and female) aged 18 years and over, from three ethnic groups (Malay, Chinese and Indian). The sample size calculated using the Fleiss method with continuity correction is 333. Sero-surveillance of participants will be undertaken to identify asymptomatic, otherwise healthy cases; cases with dengue fever who are managed as out-patients; and cases with dengue fever admitted to a hospital. A genetic analysis of the participants will be undertaken to determine whether there is a relationship between genetic predisposition and disease severity. A detailed medical history, past history of dengue infection, vaccination history against other flaviviruses such as Japanese encephalitis and Yellow fever, and the family history of dengue infection will also be collected. In addition, a mosquito surveillance will be carried out simultaneously in recruitment areas to determine the molecular taxonomy of circulating vectors. Discussion The research findings will estimate the burden of asymptomatic and symptomatic dengue at the community level. It will also examine the relationship between virus serotypes and host genotypes, and the association of the clinical manifestation of the early phase with the entire course of illness.https://doi.org/10.1186/s40249-016-0172-35pubpub
