Estimation of Precision and Uncertainty of a Calibration Artefact for CMMs

    Get PDF
A new kind of artefact, based on a modification of the hexapod machine’s well-known structure, has been introduced by Antunes, S. D. et al in [1], in order to determine the global errors of coordinate measuring machines. Here we are presenting results from validation of the technique: using a self-calibrated method and modeling the reference value for calibration based on laser trilateration

Drawing on the resource-based view, this study investigates the way that export commitment and innovativeness contribute to marketing capabilities development, and the effect of all these factors on export market effectiveness. We use a survey data of 202 exporting manufacturing firms based in Portugal to test the relationships between the constructs analyzed in this study. The findings demonstrate that a high export commitment tends to cultivate a higher degree of innovativeness, which in turn allows firms to develop superior marketing capabilities (i.e., pricing, new product development, marketing communication and distribution capabilities). Export commitment and new product development capability have a direct impact on export market effectivenes

Local Anesthetics Infiltration and Wound Healing Process

It is a good practice, nowadays, to infiltrate local anesthetics along the incision to prevent postoperative pain. This can reduce the use of opioids and the side effects they cause. It is known clearly that the surgical trauma causes inflammatory reaction, and this can be the beginning of a bad cicatrization or even a scar. The use of local anesthetics preventing the acute pain is a very simple technique and has proved to be useful. Nevertheless, the reaction that various anesthetics have over the tissues and the cicatrization process is yet controversial and deserves to be investigated deeply. The use of different formulations of these drugs has been stimulated. The duration and secureness have been the goals of many researches. Levobupivacaine, ropivacaine, and bupivacaine for their long action; lidocaine for less toxicity; and liposomal formulation for the longest duration ever seen, all of them have been indicated in the postoperative pain management. The aim of this chapter is to evaluate the role of long duration local anesthetics on the inflammatory reaction and consequently the collagen production and resistance of the tissue to traction

It is within this scope that this work is inserted that aims at the analysis of the practices of HRM in Health and its impact on the performance through the perception of the theatre nurses. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between high involvement HRM practices and performance. As instruments of performance analysis, we used Birkinshaw & Gibson (2004) of contextual ambidextria, and that followed by Gittel, et al. (2010) for Relational Coordination among nurses and other professionals in the theatre room. The survey was applied to the universe of nurses in the operating room of a private hospital in Lisbon, with a response rate of 100%. The study was complemented with an interview with the Human Resources Management Department on the Human Resources practices for the characterization of the study. From the results of the study it can be inferred that, in this population, the high involvement practices are positively related to both performance and relational coordination. In view of the results, the proposed intervention strategy has undergone a change in structures (training, information systems sharing, team meetings and problem solving), and at the relational level (creation of a meeting space and coaching)

Soil origin impacts Acacia longifolia above and belowground development: water and nutrition as players

Context: Acacia longifolia is an aggressive invader, disrupting habitats and communities worldwide. Understanding what drives its expansion is of paramount importance. Key functional traits include fast growth and the presence of bacterial symbionts performing nitrogen fixation. Aims: To address early plant development of A. longifolia under different soils and growth conditions (water and nutrition availability), establishing the key factors that influence above and belowground responses. Methods: Plants were grown in pots with soils collected from forest, agricultural and dune areas in relative proximity, in a controlled experiment designed to study water effect and nutrient availability on early growth. Growth parameters included shoot and root length, nodule number and weight. Bacteria were isolated from nodules for genetic diversity evaluation. Photosynthetic pigments and isotopic nitrogen and carbon analyses were performed to address nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis. Key results: Soil origin influenced plant growth and bacterial diversity. Largest plant development was achieved in forest soils with added nutrition and water. Plants from agricultural soil displayed higher aboveground development; however, belowground nodule number and bacterial biodiversity decreased, possibly due to anthropogenic activities. Forest soil promoted belowground development and bacterial diversity. In dune soils overall growth was lower and nitrogen fixation was higher. Conclusion: Abiotic factors influenced juvenile acacia development; nutrition acts as a growth enhancer, and soil origin, including its microbial communities, can be considered a development modulator. Bacterial diversity varied according to soil type. Implications: Several above and belowground interactions showed the need for an integrative perspective to understand acacias invasive potential.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

VITIVINICULTURE, ENVIRONMENT AND BIODIVERSITY: SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS

    Get PDF
The rational use of resources is currently a widely discussed topic in any organization, although it takes on greater importance in those of productive scope. Measures of different levels − strategic, tactical or operational − are increasingly being implemented, so it is pertinent to analyze their effect on the distinct dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. Any strategic process must go through those that are considered the four crucial stages: analysis, formulation, implementation and control. The perfect knowledge of the environment and its emerging needs and concerns along with an in-depth survey of the internal situation of the organizations will allow us to achieve truly differentiating levels of excellence. This research, carried out in a wine-producing organization – Adega Cooperativa de Mangualde – identifies its crucial activities, the main strategic, tactical and operational actions that have been implemented in the last eight years, fits them into the above-mentioned dimensions of sustainability and determines its relative weights. Particular emphasis is placed on grapes suppliers − the capital holders −, as regards their mode of production and its impact on biodiversity and the environment. Raising public awareness of this issue is of great importance and people should be encouraged to alter their behaviour by changing some attitudes in everyday life. This awareness to achieve sustainable development becomes even more important insofar as it is a cooperative institution with a management model of well-defined specific characteristics
