The main determinants of economic growth : an empirical investigation with Granger causality analysis for Greece

    Get PDF
This paper examines empirically the causal relationship among exports, gross capital formation, foreign direct investments and economic growth using a multivariate autoregressive Var model for Greece over the period 1960-2002. The results of cointegration test suggested that there is only one cointegrated vector between the examined variables, while Granger causality tests showed that there is a unidirectional causal relationship between exports and gross fixed capital formation and also there is a unidirectional causal relationship between foreign direct investments and economic growth.peer-reviewe

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Developing a Culture of Assessment

    Get PDF
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative at Hostos Community College focuses on melding assessment and faculty development through a scholastic approach. In order to facilitate a campus-wide engagement in assessment, particularly related to the effectiveness of classroom instruction, the focus remains on individual expectations and talents, professional responsibilities, and using formative and summative assessment to improve student success and recidivism. This was initiated through open dialogue on the critical need for inquiry-based instruction, targeted presentations, and a sustainable network of support

Shaping an Identity: Junior-Faculty Orientation in a Year-Long Seminar

This one-year seminar prepares new faculty to meet institutional expectations in the areas of scholarship, teaching, and service in a community college. In doing so, the Center for Teaching and Learning harmonizes new faculty with departmental and institutional needs while fostering a safe environment for faculty acclimation

The Impact of a Supplemental Instruction Program on Diverse Peer Leaders at a Two-Year Institution

    Get PDF
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-led academic support program in which SI Leaders help students develop study habits and note-taking strategies as well as facilitate test preparation. While the effects of SI on students receiving the instruction have been thoroughly investigated, there have been far fewer studies that have assessed the impact of SI on its Leaders. Furthermore, research on Leaders has yet to adequately consider community colleges or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), or to employ qualitative methodologies. Thus, this paper details an SI program developed at a two-year HSI and the impact of the SI Leaders’ experience via qualitative data analysis of structured, open-ended interviews. The majority of Leaders described shifts in long-term goals or changes in learning styles from individual learning and a desire to “look smart” to one that embraced asking for help, peer learning, and belonging. The data indicate a shift in academic mindset among Leaders, particularly among minority male and female adult learners and Latino males

An investigation of wireless solutions for the "Last Mile"

The need for broadband network access is experiencing rapid growth, but what is currently available is not sufficient. Copper-based technologies cannot address the requirements of today's bandwidth-intensive Internet applications. End-users in the "last mile" demand access speeds equivalent to those supported by fiber optics backbone networks, although, the cost and time associated with its installation are prohibitive factors for bringing fiber to every home and business. This results in the well-known "last mile access problem," which prevents the Internet from reaching its full potential, and has paved the way for the development of many innovative technologies. Driven by demands for more bandwidth, wireless broadband technologies have been proposed. This thesis provides an investigation of two candidates to address the lack of adequate bandwidth in the "last mile," Free Space Optics (FSO), and the IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) standard. FSO uses optical signals to deliver information at extremely high data rates, more quickly and cost-effectively than fiber systems. The IEEE 802.11 standard uses radio technology to transfer data. They both use license-free frequency bands for transmission through the atmosphere. They both are quickly deployable, easily scalable, and cheaper than wired solutions, characteristics able to support applications requiring high bandwidth and a high degree of mobility.http://archive.org/details/aninvestigationo109451620Lieutenant Commander, Hellenic NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

The formation of linked perceptual classes.

Multiple-exemplar training with stimuli in four domains induced two new fill-based (A1' and A2') and satellite-image-based (B1' and B2') perceptual classes. Conditional discriminations were established between the endpoints of the A1' and B1' classes as well as the A2' and B2' classes. The emergence of linked perceptual classes was evaluated by the performances occasioned by nine cross-class probes that contained fill variants as samples and satellite variants as comparisons, along with nine other cross-class probes that consisted of satellite variants as samples and fill variants as comparisons. The 18 probes were first presented serially and then concurrently. Class-consistent responding indicated the emergence of linked perceptual classes. Of the linked perceptual classes, 70% emerged during the initial serial test. An additional 20% of the linked perceptual classes emerged during the subsequently presented concurrent test block. Thus, linked perceptual classes emerged on an immediate or delayed basis. Linked perceptual classes, then, share structural and fuctional similarities with equivalence classes, generalized equivalence classes, cross-modal classes, and complex maturally occurring categories, and may clarify processes such as intersensory perception
