Machine learning assists the classification of reports by citizens on disease-carrying mosquitoes
Mosquito Alert (www.mosquitoalert.com/en) is an expert-validated citizen science platform for tracking and controlling disease-carrying mosquitoes. Citizens download a free app and use their phones to send reports of presumed sightings of two world-wide disease vector
mosquito species (the Asian Tiger and the Yellow Fever mosquito). These reports are then supervised by a team of entomologists and, once validated, added to a database. As the platform prepares to scale to much larger geographical areas and user bases, the expert validation by entomologists becomes the main bottleneck. In this paper we describe the use of machine learning on the citizen reports to automatically validate a fraction of them, therefore allowing the entomologists either to deal with larger report streams or to concentrate on those that are more strategic, such as reports from new areas (so that early warning protocols are activated) or from areas with high epidemiological risks (so that control actions to reduce mosquito populations are activated). The current prototype flags a third of the reports as “almost certainly positive” with high confidence. It is currently being integrated into the main workflow of the Mosquito Alert platform.Postprint (published version
Electrorotation of semiconducting microspheres
We study experimentally the electrorotation (ROT) of semiconducting microspheres. ZnO microspheres obtained by a hydrothermal synthesis method are dispersed in KCl aqueous solutions and subjected to rotating electric fields. Two ROT peaks are found in experiments: a counterfield peak and a cofield peak at somewhat higher frequencies. These observations are in accordance with recent theoretical predictions for semiconducting spheres. The counterfield rotation is originated by the charging of the electrical double layer at the particle-electrolyte interface, while the cofield rotation is due to the Maxwell-Wagner relaxation. Additionally, we also found that some microspheres in the sample behaved differently and only showed counterfield rotation. We show that the behavior of these particles can be described by the so-called shell model. The microstructure of the microspheres is analyzed with electron microscope techniques and related to the ROT measurements.Spanish Government Ministry MICINN under Contract No. PGC2018-099217-B-I00Junta de Andalucía Contract No. PEJUS-

CYCLIC: A Locality-Preserving Load-Balancing Algorithm for PDES on Shared Memory Multiprocessors
This paper presents a new load-balancing algorithm for shared memory multiprocessors that is currently being applied to the parallel simulation of logic circuits, specifically VHDL simulations. The main idea of this load-balancing algorithm is based on the exploitation of the usual characteristics of these simulations, that is, cyclicity and predictability, to obtain a good load balance while preserving the locality of references. This algorithm is useful not only in the area of logic circuit simulation but also in systems presenting a cyclic execution pattern, that is, repetition over time, making the future behavior of the tasks predictable. An example of this is Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES), where several tasks are repeatedly executed in response to certain events. A comparison between the proposed algorithm and other load-balancing algorithms found in the literature reveals consistently better execution times with improvements in both load-balancing and locality of references that can be of help on current multicore desktop computers

Retrospective and Prospective Analysis on Educational Leadership: Indicators of Productivity, Dispersion, and Content
This article analyzes the production, performance, impact, and content
of scientific documents contained in an internationally recognized
database, the Web of Science, that consider educational leadership (EL)
thesaurus (title, abstract and/or keywords). To this end, a scientometric
study was performed on a sample of 2,181 research documents that met
the established inclusion criteria. A co-word analysis was also
performed using Hirsch’s index (2005), as well as several bibliometric
indicators, impact factors, and citation indices (h, g, hg, and q2). The
main findings indicate that production on the topic of EL dates back to
1924, although it did not reach a significant level until 2004. Several
important points related to the production profile on EL are
highlighted: language, area of knowledge and institutions, and authors
specializing in the subject. There are several lines of study open in the
established periods, and the subjects that should be taken into account
in the future are “critical-race-theory,” “identity,” and “distributedleadership.”
The implications and limitations of the study are
discussed and ways for education leaders to address new education
policies and their practical implications are provided.Ministry of Universities of the Government of SpainEuropean Commissio
