    Choreographing intimacy: The making of ‘[they] slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered’ – a dance film

    In this investigation, I have utilised a practice-led research methodology to capture ‘intimacy’ in film, specifically, the medium of dance film. The exegetical work is divided into the written research with an accompanied dance film component; however they should be viewed as an integrated thesis. The aim of my research was to develop my choreographic practice through a film that is a sensory and evocative exploration of intimacy. I argue that the film components of dance film (directing, cinematography, editing and the like) uniquely capture an intangability of dance and the complexities of human intimacy in a manner that is different from live performance. I do not explicitly depict any sexual act in the choreographic work or the dance film, instead I abstract the concept of the \u27human sexual response cycle\u27 as an analogical depiction of intimacy for choreographic inspiration and the premise for a dance film. In this sense, the notion of bareness is embraced as a way to unpack the complexity of intimacy. The research investigated my practice as a choreographer in synergy with the dancers and film crew arguing that each stage of the process was an act of dance making in and of itself. Furthermore, this project comprehensively analyses the act and the art of making the dance film, [they] slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered, and the ways notions of intimacy are able to be captured in choreography and filmic imagery. I have been able to choreograph the final work through the investigation of texts and film in conjunction with studio time where I choreographed partly on myself and afterwards on the dancers and reflections on the filming process make up the whole thesis. I do not see these processes as separate components to the choreographic process but a rather unique marriage which is captured in the finished film

    Toxoplasmosis in livestock in Italy: an epidemiological update

    Infection with Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common parasitic infections of human being and other warm-blooded animals. It has been found worldwide from Alaska to Australia. Public health organizations repeatedly encourage the collection of accurate data about T. gondii in animals and humans due to its medical importance as a major source of parasitic zoonosis. For these reasons, epidemiological updates on toxoplasmosis in livestock are strongly advised also to plan control strategies. In the present paper, seroprevalence data on T. gondii that have been recorded in livestock from different Italian regions over the last 3 decades are reviewed, showing the high level of exposure of livestock to this parasite

    Effects of Asperity Distribution on Fluid Flow and Induced Seismicity During Deep Geothermal Exploitation

    AbstractThis work investigates the injection-induced seismic response of a heterogeneous fault plane, featuring low-permeability asperities embedded into a high-permeability damage zone. We simulate the pressure evolution with a hydrogeological simulator, accounting for the heterogeneous fault plane. Seismicity occurs then on the asperities, represented as unstable patches reactivating by means of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The hydrological and seismic modules are implicitly coupled to account for effects of asperity reactivation on the permeability. Results show that permeability changes may cause at a later time a change in seismicity propagation. We also investigated such effects by varying the density of asperities

    Effects of atmospheric conditions on surface diffuse degassing

    International audienceDiffuse degassing through the soil is commonly observed in volcanic areas and monitoring of carbon dioxide flux at the surface can provide a safe and effective way to infer the state of activity of the volcanic system. Continuous measurement stations are often installed on active volcanoes such as Furnas (Azores archipelago), which features low temperature fumaroles, hot and cold CO2 rich springs, and several diffuse degassing areas. As in other volcanoes, fluxes measured at Furnas are often correlated with environmental variables, such as air temperature or barometric pressure, with daily and seasonal cycles that become more evident when gas emission is low. In this work, we study how changes in air temperature and barometric pressure may affect the gas emission through the soil. The TOUGH2 geothermal simulator was used to simulate the gas propagation through the soil as a function of fluctuating atmospheric conditions. Then, a dual parameters study was performed to assess how the rock permeability and the gas source properties affect the resulting fluxes. Numerical results are in good agreement with the observed data at Furnas, and show that atmospheric variables may cause the observed daily cycles in CO2 fluxes. The observed changes depend on soil permeability and on the pressure driving the upward flux

    A dynamic interface between ubiquitylation and cAMP signaling

    Phosphorylation waves drive the propagation of signals generated in response to hormones and growth factors in target cells. cAMP is an ancient second messenger implicated in key biological functions. In mammals, most of the effects elicited by cAMP are mediated by protein kinase A (PKA). Activation of the kinase by cAMP results in the phosphorylation of a variety of cellular substrates, leading to differentiation, proliferation, survival, metabolism. The identification of scaffold proteins, namely A-Kinase Anchor proteins (AKAPs), that localize PKA in specific cellular districts, provided critical cues for our understanding of the role played by cAMP in cell biology. Multivalent complexes are assembled by AKAPs and include signaling enzymes, mRNAs, adapter molecules, receptors and ion channels. A novel development derived from the molecular analysis of these complexes nucleated by AKAPs is represented by the presence of components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). More to it, the AKAP complex can be regulated by the UPS, eliciting relevant effects on downstream cAMP signals. This represents a novel, yet previously unpredicted interface between compartmentalized signaling and the UPS. We anticipate that impairment of these regulatory mechanisms could promote cell dysfunction and disease. Here, we will focus on the reciprocal regulation between cAMP signaling and UPS, and its relevance to human degenerative and proliferative disorders

    GPGPU for track finding in High Energy Physics

    The LHC experiments are designed to detect large amount of physics events produced with a very high rate. Considering the future upgrades, the data acquisition rate will become even higher and new computing paradigms must be adopted for fast data-processing: General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is a novel approach based on massive parallel computing. The intense computation power provided by Graphics Processing Units (GPU) is expected to reduce the computation time and to speed-up the low-latency applications used for fast decision taking. In particular, this approach could be hence used for high-level triggering in very complex environments, like the typical inner tracking systems of the multi-purpose experiments at LHC, where a large number of charged particle tracks will be produced with the luminosity upgrade.
