    The flat X-ray spectrum of the LINER NGC1052

    We report on ROSAT and ASCA observations of the LINER NGC1052, which is the first one where broad optical lines in polarized light have been observed. The 2-10 keV spectrum is very flat, with an observed photon index (Gamma) ~0.1. A model where a nuclear source is - partly or totally - obscured by a screen of matter with column density ~10^23 atom/cm/cm is the most convincing explanation for the observed flatness. This agrees with the hypothesis that the LINERs are a population of low-luminosity AGN, to which the Seyfert unification scenario applies. The intrinsic spectral index is still rather flat (1.0-1.4), as observed in a few type-2 Seyferts so far or predicted if the accretion occurs in an advection-dominated flow.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, 2 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Study of the performance of the NA62 Small-Angle Calorimeter at the DAΦ\PhiNE Linac

    The measurement of BR(K+π+ννˉ)BR(K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}) with 10% precision by the NA62 experiment requires extreme background suppression. The Small Angle Calorimeter aims to provide an efficient veto for photons flying at angles down to zero with respect to the kaon flight direction. The initial prototype was upgraded and tested at the Beam Test Facility of the DAΦ\PhiNE Linac at Frascati.     Abstract In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a WHR (Waste heat Recovery) ORC system with positive displacement rotary expander has been analyzed and an optimal control strategy was defined to increase the system efficiency and flexibility. Input heat flow was varied in time by varying the heat source mass flow and inlet temperature, according to two different load cycles. Three different control strategy were implemented and compared. The first strategy was sliding pressure, where expander speed was kept constant and system power output was controlled by evaporator pressure variations. The second control strategy was sliding velocity, where expander speed was varied to keep the evaporating temperature to a constant set point value. The third control strategy was a combination of sliding-pressure and sliding velocity: the set point of evaporating pressure varied according to a suitable function of easily measurable variables, with the objective of maximizing system efficiency. A function of the heat source admission temperature and of the product of the volume flow rate by the admission pressure was used to define the evaporating temperature set point. This function was evaluated in steady-state conditions from the model of the plant. Results showed that the last control strategy, maximized system efficiency and flexibility, and that the control parameter chosen were suitable to drive the set point variation

    Analysis of X-ray flares in GRBs

    We present a detailed study of the spectral and temporal properties of the X-ray flares emission of several GRBs. We select a sample of GRBs which X-ray light curve exhibits large amplitude variations with several rebrightenings superposed on the underlying three-segment broken powerlaw that is often seen in Swift GRBs. We try to understand the origin of these fluctuations giving some diagnostic in order to discriminate between refreshed shocks and late internal shocks. For some bursts our time-resolved spectral analysis supports the interpretation of a long-lived central engine, with rebrightenings consistent with energy injection in refreshed shocks as slower shells generated in the central engine prompt phase catch up with the afterglow shock at later times.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. We study the canonical massive Nose-Hoover chain (MNHC) dynamics [G.J. Martyna, M.L. Klein, and M. Tuckerman, J. Chem. Phys. 97, 2635 (1992)] and show it can be used to determine Helmholtz free energies within an adiabatic switching procedure. We calculate the Helmoltz free energy difference between two different Einstein crystals, each consisting of 100 identical independent harmonic oscillators with different characteristic frequencies by a MNHC molecular dynamics adiabatic switching procedure. The simulations were performed using two different switching functions. Applying the quantitative error analysis of Tsao, Sheu, and Mou [J. Chem. Phys. 101, 2302 (1994)], it is found that systematic errors during the switching process can be estimated quantitatively, allowing a correction of the converged results. The corrected results obtained by adiabatic switching deviate less than 1% from the analytical value.
