Independent directors' background and CSR disclosure
[EN] This paper extends research on how the background of independent directors mayaffect the way in which their companies disclose information about corporate socialresponsibility (CSR). Using a sample of 83 Spanish‐listed firms over the period2009–2014, the findings of a random effects probit model suggest that, in additionto board independence, having independent directors with political backgroundsand diverse education has a positive impact on their firm's probability of issuing aCSR report following the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative.SIWe acknowledge funding received from the Ministerio de Economía yCompetitividad of Spain (projects ECO2015‐63880‐R and ECO 2015‐69058‐R) and the University of León (Spain) (project ULE2014‐1
Do Board Gender Diversity and Director Typology Impact CSR Reporting?
[EN] By studying female directors and their typology, this paper contributes to the empirical evidence relating to boardgender diversity and the disclosure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) information. An ordered random effectprobit model was applied to a panel of Spanish non-financial and non-insurance listed firms over the 2009–2013period. The analyses revealed that a higher percentage of women in boardrooms and in groups of outside andindependent directors imply better CSR disclosure. These results hold for corporations with a critical mass of threewomen on the board and among outside directorsSIThe authors acknowledge the funding received from theProject ECO2012-35439 from the Ministerio deEconomía y Competitividad of Spain and the ProjectULE2014-1 from the University of León (Spain).
The motor game as methodological tool for boys and girls with functional diversity
This article suggests using motor games as a methodological tool in the Young Athletes Program of Special Olympics or with any child with any kind of disability. After contextualizing what is the Young Athletes Program, an analysis about the motor games is carried out taking into account several definitions. Some of its advantages are also set forth given the fact that motor games not only enhance the children’s physical developement, but they favour an integrated development. Several games are presented in order to show some ideas that might be used taking advantage of all the benefits that have been stated
Does CEO media exposure affect corporate social responsibility?
[EN] Given the central role played by CEOs in the arena of strategic decision making, thisarticle focuses on their impact on the implementation of socially responsible initia-tives, which try to comply with the stakeholders' demands. Specifically, and drawingupon the relevant influence of media on decision makers, we analysed how CEOs'media exposure affects the development of their companies' corporate social respon-sibility (CSR) practices. Moreover, relying mainly on the agency and stakeholder the-ories, we also considered a potential moderating effect of other CEO characteristics. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis carried out on a sample of 60 pub-licly listed Spanish companies in 2014 suggest that greater CEO media exposure canlead to a greater commitment to CSR. Furthermore, it was observed that this relation-ship may be affected by CEO tenure and prior political experience.SIThe authors acknowledge the financial support by the Ministerio deEconomía y Competitividad del Gobierno de España (research projects ECO2015‐63880‐R and ECO2015‐69058‐R
Continuous expressive speaking styles synthesis based on CVSM and MR-HMM
This paper introduces a continuous system capable of automatically producing the most adequate speaking style to synthesize a desired target text. This is done thanks to a joint modeling of the acoustic and lexical parameters of the speaker models by adapting the CVSM projection of the training texts using MR-HMM techniques. As such, we consider that as long as sufficient variety in the training data is available, we should be able to model a continuous lexical space into a continuous acoustic space. The proposed continuous automatic text to speech system was evaluated by means of a perceptual evaluation in order to compare them with traditional approaches to the task. The system proved to be capable of conveying the correct expressiveness (average adequacy of 3.6) with an expressive strength comparable to oracle traditional expressive speech synthesis (average of 3.6) although with a drop in speech quality mainly due to the semi-continuous nature of the data (average quality of 2.9). This means that the proposed system is capable of improving traditional neutral systems without requiring any additional user interaction
[EN] This paper is based on a concept of Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) as an extended form of corporate governance that considers all
stakeholders and analyses its effect on financial performance. The
results for a sample of Spanish companies listed in the Ibex 35 (years
2007-2010) show that the composition of the board of directors,
measur ed as the percentage of independent directors, affects CSR. At
the same time we found that CSR mediates the positive relationship
between the independence of the board of directors and the firm value.S
Expressive Speech Identifications based on Hidden Markov Model
This paper concerns a sub-area of a larger research field of Affective Computing, focusing on the employment of affect-recognition systems using speech modality. It is proposed that speech-based affect identification systems could play an important role as next generation biometric identification systems that are aimed at determining a person’s ‘state of mind’, or psycho-physiological state. The possible areas for the deployment of voice-affect recognition technology are discussed. Additionally, the experiments and results for emotion identification in speech based on a Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) classifier are also presented. The result from experiment suggests that certain speech feature is more precise to identify certain emotional state, and that happiness is the most difficult emotion to detect
